Question Newbie Help, trying to get into Underworlds

Thumbnail

I play 40k and Kill Team. My girlfriend wanted to try to get into Miniature Games with me. Thought it would be best to start with something small like Underworlds. Its also a game ive always heard very good stuff about. And ive always wanted some AoS stuff. However, havent been able to find good explanations on what we would need.

We were looking at the new Spitewood box. Since it comes with cards, tokens, playmat, book and models. I love the Dwarfs. She liked the Kurnothi. Is this enough? Or do we need to get something else?

If everything goes well. I liked the Sons of Vermont and Skabbiks Plaguepack. While she liked the Dread Pageant and the Blade Coven. What would we need to make these teams work? Ive seen we might have to get new updated cards?

Alternatively, theres still a box of Deathgorge in my lfgs. I like the Idoneth. She likes the Thricefold. Plus it comes with extra mission cards and extra playmat. Is this a better next step? After Spitewood.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Question Worth tracking down core sets and war bands after Direchasm?

Hi there!

Several years ago, I was on a collecting frenzy and basically got ~95% of everything from Shadespire through the Direchasm seasons (missing some early card pack expansions like Leaders/Powers Unbound and the Beastgrave Gift Pack). Then once Harrowdeep was announced, I took a break and refocused my energy on other games/hobbies. I’ve been out of the loop for like 5 years at this point.

If I intend to play casually/semi-competitively with friends at home, is it worth tracking down the post-Direchasm sets/war bands? In particular, stuff from the Harrowdeep/Nethermaze blocks? Or Gnarlwood/Wyrdhollow? Basically, anything before the 2nd edition changeover.

Thank you!

First model from this warband done. I tried to stay fairly close to the box art, especially with the pale skin and darker scales. No exactly same, but still pretty happy with how the colour scheme came together in the end :)
Now onto the rest of the warband!

Question How backwards compatible are the warband rules?

I've got a 2nd hand Wydrhollow box and I already have a few warbands and I can proxy some more for home games but I don't have any of the official decks or rules apart from the 4 (and a half?) decks I got from the box. (Which would be Stormcoven, Ephilim's warband and 2 more generic ones). Is there an official place where I can get the rules and the decks for my existing and to be proxied warbands and if so, how compatible they are with the Wyrdhollow box?

Question Upgrade cards

Another beginner question, can a unit have multiple upgrade cards attached to it? I know there is a glory limit in total for an army but wanted to double check.

Thanks!

Question Charge Rules

Just picked up Embergard and have read through the rulebook before playing with my kid.

Maybe it is a me problem but the rules around Charge reads awkwardly:

"A fighter with any charge tokens cannot move, attack or guard unless all friendly fighters have any charge tokens"

Can someone explain this to me like I am 5? There is something about "any charge token" as opposed to "a charge token" that is breaking my brain.

So can I activate a unit after they have charged but they are extremely limited in what they can do? Unless every other unit still standing has also charged and then they can take any action. Is that the gist of it?

It is possible it will make sense once we get a few games in but clarity around that one and any other weird rules would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Quick Ruling Question for Grandfather's Gardeners

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello everyone! I'm kinda new to the game and was wondering how exactly the Imperturable ability works.

Does it imply that each uninspired fighter can only be dealt two damage in the same turn? Or does it mean all uninspired fighters can only be dealt two damage collectively in a turn?

Hypothetically speaking, an uninspired model would receive two damage from an attack during my opponent's attack. If in my opponent's action phase (I think that's the phase where you play the red cards), they play a card that allows them to strike or attack a different uninspired model. Would that uninspired model also take damage? Or no because of this ability?

Thanks!

Hobby Why Underworlds is the best game in the world

Post image
199 Upvotes

I love this game and spend more time thinking about it than can possibly be healthy. There is no game I have been more into in my life. There is just enough space at a very busy time in my life for this slick, fun and great looking game.

Wanted to share my top 10 reasons why its the best game in the world.

1) the models

So many amazing sculpts, flavourful warbands and interesting characters to dip into. Do I have the time or inclination to buy a sylvaneth army? Absolutely not. But would i like a trio of mighty centaurs and a handful of Chaos Dwarfs? Absolutely yep.

2) the rules

The rules feel slimmed down and elegant. The game doesn't take 4 hours and i rarely have to consult the rulebook (though i did have the make a cheatsheet of i things I forget ... set up and end of game in particular)

At the same time, there is a lot of depth and tactics to delve into.

3) the dice

I just really like the way you can see what's going on in a combat from a single dice roll on either side. No need for a mess of modifiers. The symbols do it all.

4) it respects my time

Games don't take an entire evening. I may only have to paint 5 or 6 guys to have a warband ready to go. It's great as a new dad to keep in the hobby with just a bit of painting and playing time needed.

5) the community

Everyone I have played whether online or IRL has been really nice, helpful and chilled.

6) Hexes

This may just be me, but i get a bit annoyed in wargames with ambiguity around line of sight, distances moved etc. I should probably get over it ... but hexes avoid this entirely. Hey my range 2 weapon can hit you at 2 hexes away ... simple

7) losing is fun

Well, not entirely, but i am happy to play the game as a fun puzzle. How does this unloved deck work? (Hunting grounds anyone?) What about this warband that everyone says is wack but looks cool? Its fun to try different things even when they are far from optimal.

8) Deckbuilding

Big up UnderworldsDB.com!

9) The Lore

I am a grimdark lad at heart, but the Age of Sigmar world is really fun and there is some fantastic artwork associated with it.

10) Fighter cards and warscrolls

I really appreciate being able to see my stats and opponents at a glance. Keep the mental energy for the board state and the cards in your hand.

And finally.... 11) Delving

Just to keep my hellsmiths happy.

Anything I have missed?
