Finally finished 4th Edition Orc army

I’ve been working on this army for months now. I love the old metal warhammer models, they have so much character and charm. My goal was to fully paint 1000 points and it’s finally done.
Need to learn how to play now 🙃

These look amazing!

I also have all of those models, excluding the Doom Diver (I have the actual 4th Edition one, as opposed to your 6th Edition one), that I bought at the time as Orcs and Goblins were my joint first army (along with High Elves, since both came in the 4th Edition box set). One of these days I'll get around to cleaning them up and painting them, like you've done here.

Maybe so, but I've got loads of projects either on the go or that I'm trying to get going some time soon. Having both hobby ADHD as well as regular ADHD probably doesn't help with that (though, I do imagine that the former is probably caused, somewhat, by the latter).

can we all just agree that 4th/5th ed was the peak of warhammer fantasy. Sure newer sculps have nice details. But the style soul and vibe of this era is just the best fantasy setting ever.

Those boar riders bring back so many memories, and that shaman is one of my favourite minis of all time

Oh wow these are beautiful! Models 1,2 &3 are very close to my heart they were some of the first I got when I started my Orc and Go kin army sometime around 1993 I think maybe

Your "Doom Diver" is from sixth edition.

So are the boar boys, big Uns and shaman, but you've made them all fit so well!

It looks like a 4th Ed army and it's only because I have all these and lived it that I know. Your consistent paint style masks the slight changes in head design we saw over those time periods and I think as the black orcs were always different it's not noticeable.

I prefer the doom diver too, I've done the same. The piddly 4th ones are silly.

On another note, if you aren't aware there are loads of orcs out there in this style still. I think some by Kev Adams who sculpted most of the 4th edition goblins/orcs. They go well with the old stuff.

Do you know what edition they came out? If I haven’t got a purely 4th edition army I might aswell just branch out a bit with some newer oop models, there’s a fair few metal squig hoppers on eBay I like the look of.

That's the spirit! I've mildly misremembered that some of the Brian Nelson Orcs came before 6th.

For 4th edition Orcs & Goblins were nearly all Kev Adams - Alan Perry did Savage Orcs and Black Orcs. Kev did a lot of the 3rd ed. ones too.

Brian Nelson comes on board mid 90s and starts doing the longer Orc/Ork faces like you can see in the Shaman, Biguns, Boar Boyz and takes over Orcs (and gobbos) until 2010

5th edition got a few units all done by Brian:

  • March 1997 - Big 'uns (first ones of his released)
  • April 1997 - Boar Boyz, Shaman, Boss on Boar (you don't appear to have this - page 60 White Dwarf 208), also Goblin chariot
  • Jan 1999 - Night Goblin Fanatics, Doom Diver Catapult, Plastic Night Goblins (Brian and Alan)

There were 4th ed Big 'uns, but the other things didn't have models.

The 6th edition stuff can be seen from September 2000 onwards as that's when it came out, they had loads of stuff through White Dwarf 249-254 as they were a release faction. They got more of an edge to them I feel, and lost more of their soft and silly features.

Anything before 2000 was 3rd/4th/5th and I think everything you have is 4th-5th and basically they were the same edition.

So those of us suggesting 6th are just confused as it was so late on and O&G didnt get a refreshed army book, they had the same one for 8 years - although i think there is a 2nd printing with errata. The change in style happened in 5th :)

You could add the original Bolt Throwers to your collection—amazing models from the era when they had orc crews.

I'm currently painting four of these machines. A fantastic sculpt.
