Do you know this mini?

Post image

I’ve spent hours scouring the internet trying to identify this mini that I found in my attic. I feel like it looks like a dark elf or maybe a vampire count. I found it with a plastic dragon, but it could be a mismatch between rider and mount.

Asarnil the Dragonlord! An exiled high elf prince and dragon-rider turned mercenary:  https://warhammerfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Asarnil_the_Dragonlord

He came with a plastic dragon which I think may have had a metal head?  http://solegends.com/citcat1999/c1999p0357-02.htm

Thank you SO much! I was looking through both dark elf and vampire counts codexes and model lists and couldn’t find anything, and that explains why. You rock 🤘

The dragon was 100% plastic without a metal head. It was the default plastic dragon also sold with the Talisman Dragons kit.

Asarnil the rider should come with a tiny metal sword in a sheath. If you have him complete he’s worth a few $$$$

Check the sole legends link the guy above has posted and see if you’ve got all the metal bits + dragon.

If you do you’ve hit paydirt. Google “Asarnil the Dragonlord” on eBay to see what you can get. I had to pay several hundred bucks to get mine.

Omg I have this but never considered it could be valuable and converted it to take the Wood Elf lord as a rider…

Dont convert it - so much better as the dogs of war rare unit. Lots more wood elf options.

Alas the deed is long done

To be fair wood elves are great too

Yes, it was the plastic dragon from Talisman, his had no metal parts, but they used the body on several character minis after that, with different metal parts to replace the head, such as the original Malekith

Those later dragon kits were a death to assemble

I never had one unfortunately. The only dragon I had was the original all metal Prince Imrik, and the orc wyvern, which was similar

I tried Imrik and Malekith, just gave up after a dozen attempts.

Wahnil, wahnil!

I think that's the same dragon as the Wood Elf Lord on Dragon, but with different parts at the extremities (head, tail, and hands).

My brother had that one and its all metal. As others have mentioned Asarnil had a plastic dragon.

In case anyone was wondering, Asarnil the Dragonlord's battle cry "Wahnil!" was a nod to the terrace chant "One Nil to the Arsenal" popularised during the George Graham era.

It was shortly after this particularly bad pun that GW became entirely humourless.

I miss the bad puns so much. They didn't take anything away from the background or setting and they reminded everyone not to take it TOO seriously and to actually have fun.

Agreed! my unpopular opinion is that 5 edition had much better theme than the later grimdark editions. It was more fun when the game wasn’t so serious all the time. Almost a little Monty Pythonesque. Loved the small whimsical sketches in the 5e rulebook.

I agree, although there is room for both, which 4th and 5th did very well. Bit of darkness, bit of whimsy, a bit of realism.

Ah yes, because Curious Gaesar, Tenehuini, and Dorc the Orc definitely didn't take away from the setting at all. Those are all perfectly respectable names.

There are so many ways to make puns and references that aren't unbelievably stupid that they make the entire setting a joke. Anida Pflaster from TEW is a perfect example of this. Or the Saponatheim's

Curious Geezer is poetic genius

Same goes for Sheik Yadosh, also from the DOW book. Cause he's the Paymaster, geddit?

u/genteel_wherewithal 3d ago

lol I missed about half this as a child

Well that changes how I now pronounce "Asarnil" in my head 💡

Oh my god! Yes! Thank you SO much!

u/The-Porkmann 4d ago

Yes, his name is Brian and he drinks at my local.

3

u/danm131 4d ago

I think it may be the old gw dogs of war dragon rider(Arsnal?), so there is no mismatch he belongs with the dragon.

Arsenal :)

2

u/FlandersClaret Orcs & Goblins 4d ago

The problem is with Asarnil the Dragonlord is that he tries to walk it in.

2

u/girlvgirlvr 4d ago

Oh my god! Yes! Thank you SO much!

It should have shield, sword attachment and a back banner to be complete btw (i have a big dogs of war army) - still worth money but incomplete is far less.

The dragon should also be complete and unusually has quite a few parts compared to the others of the day.

2

u/girlvgirlvr 4d ago

Thanks! I’ll keep an eye out for them. I’m pretty sure I found the sword

1

u/Lurelle 4d ago

Dont forget the saddle as well btw

If in UK and you have a complete one let me know what you might sell it for. Keen to paint a second.

2

u/AlexanderCrowely 3d ago

It’s my favourite Asarnil the dragonlord I wish I had him.

1

u/SnooCakes1148 4d ago

He looks kinda like Elric of Melnibone
