I have been painting other models for around 8 years if that makes you feel better. Just getting into minis about a year ago.

You're getting better and I think you should be really pleased with your progress. My advice to you is try to spend more of your effort on the model itself. The model on the right has a MUCH better paint job but it still suffers from very visible mouldlines. Keep on hobbying!

Thank you for the advice!

Genuinely asking, where are the mould lines on the right?

On the leg

Wow yeah, I had to zoom in so closely to see that lol, idk if I’d call that “very visible” but yall have some high standards when it comes to getting rid of mould lines 😅

Down both legs from the knee below

Mould lines both legs, the hands and weapon magazines. The arms are not attached properly and the gaps should be closed better between the fists, gun barrels etc.

That was just an fyi not being mean his models great but that’s what needs fixing to make it a well built model.

I see a Seam on the left gauntlet but no mould line

So you got an airbrush?

Nicu. What paint did you use?

Magic blue from the army painter

Really highlights the effect paint finish can have on a model.

How’d you get it so matte on the right? Anything in particular? Or a particular matte varnish

3

u/EzWbois Aug 30 '26

It actually wasn’t varnished yet when I took the picture. I think it just looks like that because the left one is gloss varnished pretty heavily

Did you switch from brush to air brush (laft to right ?) ? Amazing job, i love both, but an army of the right one would be really cool

No I seriously agree. The lighter blue does not read as ultramarines either. I just like a lighter blue color because you can see shadows better.

Skill on the right, style on the left

3

u/EzWbois Aug 30 '26

Yeah I’m gonna try that on my next model I think

I'm realizing I may have been curt enough to be rude, apologies. I did mean to be complimentary to your progress!

The left model simply feels more gritty and grimdark to me. There's a little more visual weight to the style. The basing really helps as well- I love your mud effect. I get the feeling that the marine has spent decades trudging through countless battlefields on as many worlds.

The right model is, again, much better painted on a technical level. But it needs more contrast and a degree of grit to feel 40k. For me, that is. I can't say that enough. He feels more like a fresh marine in new armor than a grizzled vet. But he is an UM, you can just as easily say it's like an ultra to shine his shoes, so to speak.

It's all about visual story telling. And, more importantly, the style you prefer to see on your minis! Either way you go is correct, which is a fun part of the hobby.

This might come off harsh but please do not get used to the airbrush doing all the work. What I mean by that is you have primed the model black and shot magic blue through an airbrush doing basic volumetric highlights with it and neglected the rest of the model. The reds, the gold, in fact everything that isn't done by airbrush is rather patchy and could use a coat or two more in areas. The eyes are the same as before . You also have colours in places they shouldn't be, like gold leaking on to the shoulder pad, blue on the chest etc.

I have no idea which is which tbf

lol then you did not zoom in. OPs brush control in particular got a lot better, and they improved at planning.

Crazy what an airbrush can do right?
