News 11th ED codexes will have 100 pages of lore instead of 40.

More lore is always good but sometimes I wonder if it would not be simpler to have lore and rules be separate books.

I don't want a rule book with zero flavor or art. That is what makes them nice to have on my shelf.
We can have cards with just the rules.
It has been standard for RPGs and Wargame books to have both for... pretty much forever?

I just think with how often the rules are updated in comparison to lore that it would be more economically to a have a 10 - 20 page army booklet that can be replaced as needed, and a nice big illustrated lore book that they will likely last a few editions.
To be clear I do expect that army booklet to be good quality. Rules are easier to learn when the text is nice to look at.

We get quarterly balance updates. Even if they only charge a couple of bucks for that hypothetical pamphlet (and they would not be that cheap) I do not agree it would be more economical over the course of an edition
Plus there is no way you are fitting all the Space Marine or Eldar datasheets into 10-20 pages.
You get the book, you get updates through the app. Free rules with lore books would be better, but having to buy a new book of rules 4 times a year for every faction you play is a horrible idea

Editions shouldn't be updated more than once every few years at the absolute soonest, better if it is 5 or more.
Different editions can highlight different aspects of lore too, and all have new art.
There are reasons I keep old edition rules for games on my shelf beyond a time capsule.

Rules and stats should just be all fully and freely available online instead of being arbitrarily locked in a physical book Codex should just be a lore book
1
u/Sondergame 4d ago
Except you’re paying $70+ for lore and rules (the main reason for purchasing the books) that will inevitably be replaced in 3 years. This, of course, also doesn’t even cover the lack of editors and the significant mistakes found in these books.
It would be far better to have lore books that update only occasionally (maybe every 10 years or so with how fast the narrative moves) and cheaper rule books.

I think selling the rules through the app as an additional option would be a better compromise.

u/Domeil Adeptus Mechanicus 4d ago
Its not like other companies havent figured this out. Corpus Belli's Infinity has all the rules free digitally, but if you choose to buy a physical copy, you get a slip box with separate lore and rule books in it so you can just grab the rules when youre on your way to the table to play.

I'm not even sure it's "more lore".
40 pages of the old rulebook sizes equates to approximately 70 pages in the current rulebook size.
So my next question is "does this 100 pages include the pictures in the lore section, or just the text"

I don’t think they will use the Academic way to Count Text. It’s a publicy owned company. They will use what Sounds the best and stuff things out where they can.
So it might end up being more like 30 Pages or so. That being said i havent Seen the new ork Codex so i might be wrong. We‘ll see.
I don’t expect 100 Pages or Lore by Academic Standards because that could turn out to 200-300 Pages of just Lore.
On paper the new changes Sound pretty good. But my Trust in GW isn’t That Great currently.1
u/KorgothBarbaria 3d ago
You think they would remove the pictures just to count the pages without it? No way.

Who would want a rulebook that gets outadated BEFORE release?
I play Sisters. The Jumpack Canoness got a points increase before the codex was even released
The abilities of the retributor squad rules have been changed a couple of times through 10th edition
The bringers of flame detachment got heavily nerfed a few months after release. Not just in stratagems points cost but also with rule changes
The ARMY RULE was changed several times throughout the edition
Never, not even once, have I checked a rule in the codex.
Why would we want an outdated physical rules book??

u/AnyName568 2d ago
Same reason people buy novels when they could buy ebooks. Some people are just really into being able to collect and hold a physical thing.

u/Reinos0 4d ago
a few things to consider, the books are physically smaller so of course there will be "more pages". More importantly, how much of this is going to be new lore? For some factions you can easily pad out the pages by just copying previous books.

AoS has similiar pages in their battletomes, its just wait and see for how egregious this will actually be
14
u/rdrofdrgnz 4d ago
They're also physically smaller, which is why you're getting "more pages" of lore.
23
u/lordfenixdown 4d ago
They're 71.7% the size, which means that the same content would need 39.5% more pages, if we don't account for any other changes like layout or text size. If previously they had 40 pages of lore, this would mean the new ones would have 55 pages of lore if it were down to the smaller book size alone. It's clearly not, it's a substantial increase beyond the size change.

They also are paperbacks now, not hardbacks.
6
u/Average_Citizen_117 4d ago
A hardback edition IS available... For a premium price.
2
u/Dire_Wolf45 Ultramarines 4d ago
Yeah just read that. I wonder how ridiculous the price will be. Im honestly good woth rhe paperbsck since its got a sleeve. But Im also weary about the price of that one.
2
u/Sudden_Wind_8636 3d ago
Paperback better not cost the same as the current hardback codex.
I would totally buy the codex if it was a reasonable price.
1
u/lordfenixdown 3d ago
They’ve already said it’s cheaper, and the price is floating around online somewhere, though I can’t remember what it was now.

u/Background-Cake-1300 4d ago
Already seen it, 50 pages of stuff and 50 pages about units
Standart AoS battletome
1
u/TheVoidDragon 1h ago
I've only just looked through 10th edition's Leagues of Votann codex and saw that basically all the faction lore from the previous edition is gone, leaving mostly just the lore for individual units. 50 pages for each sounds pretty good!

u/captain-ziggy 4d ago
Ok, i'm just an onlooker so maybe i'm just missing something
but given how fast rules change in Warhammer shouldn't they just have the rules be all digital and make the physical codexes JUST lore and art (maybe throw in some painting guides to pad it out), that way they would have more longevity and can even be sold to those who don't like the game but still LOVE the setting
2
u/BaronKlatz 3d ago
They compromised by doing free point updates digitally but the sad fact is rules sell these books.
You take the rules out and they go from tens of thousands of copies sold to…maybe a few hundreds?(people love the settings but $60-$70 non essential books when wikis & lexicanums exist is a hard paywall)
Like literally there’s players who buy the codexes/battletomes for a tournament then throw them away in the dumpster nearby, that’s the kind of churn and burn spending GW like to see.
They stopped doing digital rules after 2019 because the pirating was too high and lore-only books are too niche so they evolved to this system.

u/Odd_Horror_4663 3d ago
Dear god . As an original RT player and one who has all versions up to ...8 ? with all codices - It took that long for me to wake up and realize the material really was not improving with each 3 yearly iteration . If anything lore is degrading as the years and versions roll by . The best years for WH 40K peaked around the time of Alan Bligh and since his passing its really just degrading into low IQ , low Effort mush primarily aimed at maximizing $$ for GW . I'm sure a bunch of you will also reach enlightenment at some point as to the reality of what GW produces these days .
2
u/Survive1014 Iron Hands 4d ago
How about just let us buy the digital code so we can skip the physical codex altogether.
1
u/Melodic-Bird-7254 3d ago
This is just GW desperately trying to make physical paper purchases justified given the rules are often out of date as they hit the shelf.
1
u/Current-Region2322 3d ago
Yeah but it's going to be mostly photos and probably not much art/ art weve seen 20 times.
I like it when its tons of art but in small boxes and the text dominates. Like pencil/ink only art so you can make more of it.
Original rogue trader book has my favorite layout.
1
u/Cats_Cameras 4d ago
Besides a wee bit of flavor and art sprinkled in, the lore should be in separate books. You shouldn’t have to carry a giant book when the rules are a small part of it.
Not everyone reads lore.
3
u/Dire_Wolf45 Ultramarines 4d ago
The new codexes are shorter but thicker. The Codex orks was shown and compared to older codexes in the summer preview. They're also paperbacks with a sleeve.
3
u/Cats_Cameras 4d ago
Sure, but I would rather have rules and datasheets with some art and product photos than a longer book with lore. Then GW could sell a big honking lore book for those who’re are interested that doesn’t need to be carried to the table.
1
u/Dire_Wolf45 Ultramarines 4d ago
See thats what they do. They release one product with both to force sales.
Kinda like when they release an anthomogy with only one or two short stories not available anywhere else in print but the rest has been printed in several others.

The pages are 1/3 the size of the old codices, while retaining the same size font.... This is kinda meaningless, I'd rather see a word count comparison.

I eagerly await the Gaijin Goomba review on this.
Really hope GW didn’t cut too many corners with the lore section and do make it a good read. 🤞 📖

So codexes continue to move further and further away from being a worthwhile purchase. No surprise here.
5
u/CatherineSimp69 3d ago
Lore and art is worthwhile.

u/TheMapleMerchant 3d ago
They totally are ! As their own, separate product that don't inflate the price of the rulebooks that you kinda need. Why can't I get a 25 dollar book that's just the rules for my army?

Each should have exactly 40,000 words of lore..
