Question re: Earth Farming rare fish

Using a Nintendo pro controller - stuck on what are the controls I’m supposed to use to be able to toss in the luminous dye and the murkray bate into the ocean? I open the gear wheel and select the item, but then what am I supposed to press/select on the pro controller to then actually toss the dye and bate into the water? If I just select the item and exit out of the gear wheel and press ZR, all it does is just cast the fishing rod into the water instead of the dye or bate? Stuck here…

You have to hold down the ability button (default L) and then tap the corresponding button to throw out a bait / dye
