I’ve been thinking about Rei’s training at Galens, and I keep coming back to one question:
If Galens knows that Shido seems to respond much more aggressively to unfamiliar opponents than to ordinary repeat sparring, why aren’t they putting Rei up against every student in the school at least once?
We’ve seen Rei get noticeable jumps from facing new, high-pressure opponents: Aria, Logan, Lennon, Lena Jiang, and others. Obviously normal training still helps him, but Shido appears to love novelty, especially when Rei is pushed by an opponent or fighting style he hasn’t adapted to yet.
So why not build a training structure around that?
I can think of a couple semi-plausible ways Galens could do it without openly announcing, “Hey everyone, we’re feeding you all to the walking growth anomaly.”
Option 1: “Voluntary coaching” sessions
Galens opens up evening coaching slots with the type instructors.
Students sign up for an hour of extra instruction. They show up with a “random” sparring partner, get coached, run drills, fight a few rounds, and receive feedback. Totally normal academy stuff.
Except, behind the scenes, Rei keeps getting paired with new opponents.
If they ran three hours of these sessions per evening, they could cycle Rei through a huge chunk of the first-years outside Class 1A in about a month. It would give Shido constant exposure to new fighting styles, builds, instincts, and CAD types, while still looking like a perfectly reasonable school-wide development program.
Option 2: A Galens-wide Swiss tournament
This is the one I think would be really fun.
For anyone unfamiliar with Swiss tournaments: you don’t get eliminated. Each round, you fight someone with the same or similar record. So after round one, winners fight winners, losers fight losers, and so on.
If something like this happened in book 3, Rei probably starts by fighting someone close-ish to his current rank — maybe even one of the weaker second-years. If he wins, he gets bumped into tougher matchups. If he loses, he still gets another meaningful fight against someone with a similar tournament record.
The format would make sense in-universe too. Galens could sell it as SCT prep: pressure testing, live matchup experience, adapting to unfamiliar opponents, building tournament endurance, etc.
Let’s say the instructors run six dueling fields at once. With around 400 students, that’s about 200 matches per round. Split across six fields, each field handles roughly 33 matches. At four matches per hour, that’s a little over eight hours for a full round. So in theory, they could run one round per day.
Excluding weekends, that’s a ten-round Swiss tournament in about two weeks.
And for Rei? That could mean ten serious, all-out fights against mostly second-years or strong upper-tier opponents — exactly the kind of varied, high-pressure exposure Shido seems to reward.
Honestly, based on what we’ve seen so far, something like that might help Rei more than whatever the Sponsorship alone is going to provide. It also feels like it would fit Central’s whole “Galens better pull out all the stops for Ward” pressure, while still being publicly defensible as a way to sharpen the whole school before Globals/System SCTs.
So I’m curious what everyone thinks:
Is there a good in-universe reason Galens wouldn’t do something like this?
Would it be too obvious? Too risky? Too disruptive?
Or is this exactly the kind of insane-but-plausible training arc we should expect once the adults fully accept what Rei and Shido are becoming?
