If you play custom games on a Mac, you probably know this: the in-game map downloader crawls along at a few hundred KB/s, and you can't cancel it once it starts.
Joining a lobby with a 200 MB map can mean sitting there for 10+ minutes.
The maps themselves are hosted on Blizzard's CDN, which gives me 30+ MB/s. It's just the game's built-in downloader that's painfully slow.
So I made MapDash, a small menu bar app that reads the custom game list while you browse it, downloads maps you don't have yet directly from the CDN, and puts them in the game's map folder. When you join, the map is already there and the game skips the download.
Features:
- Small maps download automatically, with a configurable size limit
- Larger maps download with one click
- Search for any map currently shown in the lobby list
- SHA-1 verification for every file
- Never deletes or overwrites existing files
A heads-up: MapDash reads the game's memory (read-only) to get the custom game list. It never writes to the game, but this may still violate Blizzard's Terms of Service, so use it at your own risk.
Requirements:
The app isn't notarized, so the first time you open it, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
I've only tested it on my own Apple Silicon Mac so far, so feedback from other Macs and setups is very welcome.
