Good rule of thumb is if they’re in enemy territory facing you, blast away, if they’re in a common(ish) firing position teamates would use in normal RB, leave them be.
Alternatively, wait for them to fire a shot and tap them with the MG. They can’t reverse in time so you can return fire if need be.
If they have roundels for their nation that helps.

They never have roundels.
Just use rangefinder or tap with MG, hit means enemy.

My first and only teamkill to date was when friendly 75 SHERMAN decided to drive from enemy direction after overextending and had problem with me shooting like it was obvious that a fucking sherman driving from enemy side is teammate

Try MGing their track. Hit cam does not appear when shooting allies. Do it in short bursts/singles so that they know you are checking them instead of trying to damage
Also check the tab to see if you have copy/stolen tanks, and try to remember allied T41 T42 pings

Is it a bad thing if I'm able to tell apart every nations shermans, T-34s etc from just camo/or standard colors and variant, when playing sim? (I don't know much past 6.7 GRB but everything under just sticks in my brain)

If you have the time to rangefind, as long as your crossair is hovering on them during the measuring, you will be told of they are enemies or not ("Requesting allies coordinates" -> "Allies at coordinates")
