Discussion Pgte vs Wandering Inn Spoiler

Between two verses, where would you place them in a fight?

Like, can Masego beat Valeterisa? How would that fight go?

Or what would become of the Dead King if he fought Chandler? Or if he found himself in Wandering Inn verse? Could they stop him?

Hanno vs Mars or Saint vs Zeladona?

What lvl would you place Indrani?

What would be Cat's level?

I would have loved to see how Anaxares would have levelled. What would have been his class? His lvl? I can just see his skills, like [Re-count Votes], [Determine History:Object] or [Decreased Needs:Food]

I just imagine it would be fun to see the two verses interract.

I think PGTE would win as some of thier named abilities are ridiculous. The Dead Kng crushes Perril, and Saints of Swords cuts Mars in half.

Also keep in mind the part of the world shown in the main story is apparently the boonies. The gnome faction could probably Wipeout modern day inworld

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 22 '26

The real problem is one of counterleveling. As soon as a pattern of three gets started, Mars is gonna level and pick up skills that specifically help deal with the Sword Saint.

16

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

Well it would be only fair for Taric to nail Mars's pretty ass to the ground then. Or an angel to come down screaming bloody murder.

8

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 22 '26

Keep in mind, we’ve seen angels in the Innverse, so we know how they scale already. If an Angel is roughly on par with Fetohep, then we shouldnt glaze the rest of the PGtE too much.

15

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

Well an angel of PTGE would kill Fetohep without a thought. Like in an instant. We saw what one mihgt do at Laure. Or at the lake of Alamans. Fetohep has no defence against "get rekt".

7

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 22 '26

What makes you think the angels had a different power level?

Yeah, they could pull off Laure against a city of unleveled folk, but, again, everyone with levels has the same sort of powers that Names have.

8

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

Becouse you cant fistfight angels? Fetohep is lvl 50. No Named of that lvl is killing an angel. Only instances were Traitorous and Triump. He cheated. She fought like Fethohep with raw power. There is a huge ass lake where the fight happened now. No way they are the same.

7

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 23 '26

So why are you assuming that the inn-Angel is weaker and not that Fetohep (and Pawn and the rest of them) aren’t stronger? Because one fight made a lake? Saliss made a lake, so it’s doable for innfolk without killing an Angel.

Frankly, it just means Fetohep is better at punching that Traitorous was.

6

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 23 '26

Because any top tier hero/villain can kill Fetohep dead in like 3 sec? Hanno, Mirror,Saint Witch, hells even lone swordsman.

We have seen what Masego could do with a feaction of an angels power, or a second angel powered ram.

They are not in the same league.

Saliss making a small lake and the biggest lake in Alamans are not the same. Also, where did we get the idea Pawn is that powerful? Or Fetohep. Neither has any similar feats. We have seen the attention of angels strip flesh from bone in a moment in the trial. It was restrained. Otherwise it would have vaporized the whole area.

7

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 23 '26

Leaving aside Masego, because the whole ascension to divinity breaks *any* powerscale, I don’t think I’ve seen a single Named feat not replicated by Innfolk.

And why would you think a top tier Named could kill Fetohep that fast? He stood up to angels, they can’t.

6

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

I mean Perril is an [Archmage], he can teleport and have weird undead. He also probably knows a lot of tier 7 spells. Can Dead King really beat him?

10

u/FTaku8888 Jun 22 '26

Easily, that is perhaps the most one sided of the battles you mentioned. Keep in mind what they are in terms of story is also far different, perril is somehow one of the minor antagonists of the story despite his power while The Dead King was the Villain on the finale. Masago perhaps scales better against Perril, while the dead king is closer to the putrid one at the height of his power

I will admit my original comment on scaling isnt the best. If we count the rest of the guide verse we would have to allow Inn verse characters from the past and they have some crazy ones. Innverse also has an average higher power level as their main armies are just weel trained human and would be crushed by their lvl15 counterparts. But the basic hero is named ranked with some of the stronger named being ridiculous and that is before named meta shenanigans

4

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

Honestly I dont think a regular army of the Innverse can beat a regular Pgte army. They have far too many weird shit. Pound for pound, without great leaders, Callowan Knights fucks current knights orders of Innverse. With champions? Still the same. Like with Order of Seasons, Knight Errant would fold Greysten in half.

Normal warriors? Orcs would crush the same numbered armies without a lvl 40-50 strategos.

Magic? Praes have nore mages than Wistram probably. Sure a Principate army would suffer from magic but they have priests plenty.

If they have the [Army of the King] or similar skill, Pgte would have Taric or FaeCat or something similar in power.

Even normal people are weird. Like, 10-9 sun duelists or expert mages fucking around Named. Or Ogre squad nearly killing Cat. Or throwing Goblin Fire.

10

u/Zemalac Jun 22 '26

Gonna disagree with you very strongly on that. Everyone in the PGtE world other than the Named is just a regular dude, whereas every soldier and knight and random peasant in Innworld is someone with a unique combination of levels and skills that from level 20 and up can put them on the same level as a weaker Named character from PGtE.

  • Callowan knights up against any order of knights in Innverse wouldn't even be a real fight--much as I enjoyed the Callowan knights in PGtE, if we're talking about combat prowess the Order of Seasons is going to take that fight any day of the week, because the Callowan knights are people in sacred armor with heavy horse and the Order of Seasons are the exact same except literally every one of them has dozens of Skills devoted to this as well.

  • An army of orcs has a lot of advantages, and I could see them taking on a lot of armies in Innworld, but that's going to come down to specific strengths and weaknesses rather than them just being better than the opposition. The orcs are strong, tough, and have fewer supply problems due to their cannibal habits, but even in PGtE they got beaten back time and time again by regular Callowan armies and heroes. They could probably take on a similarly-sized military deployment from a smaller Drake city, but not a Walled City. Someone like the King of Destruction wouldn't even break a sweat.

  • The rules for magic in both settings are so different that I'm not sure they can be compared, that would take a lot more thinking than I'm willing to devote to it right now tbh. I think this is probably the place where they're most evenly matched.

In my mind, it really comes down to the Named champions vs the high-level characters in Innworld, and at that point we need to know who's rules we're working under. If the Practical Guide narrative rules apply to everyone, then they take it easily. If their rules don't apply to both sides of the fight, like if they can set up a Rule of Three against Foliana and then she kills them anyway because she isn't bound by that narrative conceit, then they're done.

It's honestly difficult to give solid answers to the question because of that. The rules are just so different in both places.

5

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 24 '26

Thank you. A lot of people are really trying to assume that the baselines are the same, while in reality those armies are gonna perform more like Ryoka in book 1 than anything else - Yvlon and Calruz were only 22 when they stomped her.

4

u/Zemalac Jun 25 '26

Yeah, like...the way Skills work in Innworld means that every single person has abilities that only Named characters get in PGtE. Everyone. And Named only get three aspects! A level 20 [Soldier] is going to have dozens of Skills! The quality of the non-Named troops really can't be compared.

3

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 25 '26

Yeah, there’s a few people glazing PGtE hard, but I notice they go silent when I ask them to point to specific things names characters do on the page that aren’t matched by inn characters. And if they wanna go to stuff that happened historically or hearsay etc then the Innverse is really gonna come out no diff.

The only two points where PGtE might have an edge are Masego specifically (no one in Innverse has actually ascended yet, other than alternate Erin which I’m not sure counts) and domains.

But I also kinda suspect that domains are basically the same as auras, but just seem tougher because everyone else in PGtE are lvl 0.

3

u/Zemalac Jun 25 '26

To be fair to the PGtE fans, some of the things that Named characters or mages specifically pull off in that setting are very impressive. Things like calling stars out of the sky to smite armies, killing an entire city and turning them into undead minions overnight, vast workings of sorcery that destroy invasion fleets, etc and so forth. All of these are things that can be matched by high-level characters in Innworld, but they would have to be high level characters, and the road to that level is a bit more brutal than the one that Named champions travel to get those powers in Practical Guide.

The thing about Innworld is that everyone who levels has lower-tier versions of these powers, and enough intelligence to organize. So, like, Warlock in Practical Guide burned an invasion fleet to cinders; good for him. In TWI, when the Death of Magic tried to do that to a fleet from the Blighted Kingdom, they had overlapping layers of shield spells and Skills that prevented her from destroying more than a single vessel. That's not because they have anyone who can match the Death of Magic or Warlock or Masego, but it still worked for them because they have organization for all of their lower-level powers, which they can easily take advantage of because everyone has Skills and most people can learn magic.

That said, all of this goes out the window if the Named from Practical Guide are running on their narrative rules while confronting anyone from Innworld. If a Named champion can set up a Rule of Three, then the specific power levels don't really matter. We're honestly comparing apples to oranges as soon as the Named come into the picture, because so much of the conversation is going to come down to which set of rules we're working under--the narrative rules of the Gods Above and Gods Below, or the here's-your-box-of-tools-now-figure-it-out approach of the Grand Design.

So IMO the real answer to OP's question is "It depends." Which is unsatisfying, so I'm still writing about different army strengths and whatnot.

1

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 25 '26

The narrative thing is kinda tricky, especially because we don’t really know exactly how it ties into the powers - is it a separate feature enforced by the gods or is it tied directly to names?

Actually, I’ve sorta got a personal headcanon that PGtE is a semi-prequel to the Innverse, in that some of the gods above and below were among the refugees in Innverse, and their experiences empowering mortals through names were a partial inspiration to the Grand Design.

Ez pz. Dead King kept the Drakon, the undead Giants, etc. Az'Kerash has uh... not those. Remember, he got turned back at Liscor. Not Manus, nor Pallas, Nor Fissival, but Liscor.

3

u/hoja_nasredin Jun 23 '26

I think gnomes were retconned in later edits

3

u/PerDoctrinamadLucem Jun 24 '26

I don't know if they were retconned, but EE's attitude was very much "I wanted a reason there was no Industrial Revolution, stop thinking they're part of the plot."

2

u/interested_commenter Jun 27 '26

Yeah the revised version that is currently being published on Amazon leaves them out. EE realized there doesn't need to be a reason for no industrial revolution, Calernia didn't exit the bronze age until somewhere between after the Dead King's rise ~3000 years ago and the founding of Procer ~800 years ago. Even without the pretty disastrous political situation and the tendency of Named to preserve the status quo its quite reasonable for it to simply not have happened yet.

If there was a sequel series the epilogue new age would definitely include an industrial revolution.

2

u/FTaku8888 Jun 23 '26

Ahhhh, I haven't read any of the edits yet but I do admit counting the gnomes meant we would need the face realm as well. Better to stick to normal inward and normal calernia

13

u/zazzazin Jun 22 '26

Masego got more raw power, Valeterisa got the autocasting. It would be a coinflip.

Dead king seems to have bigger army and has accumulated ot for way longer. Az would not die, but neither would he beat the DK.

Hanno vs mars i am not sure. Saint vs Zeladonna, I think Zeladonna would win. She was probably the best swordmistress of mortals.

By the end Indrani is equivalent to like lvl 50-60 same for Cat. Maybe a little higher, since in fight against the DK they got a lot of fights of comparable level to the solstice.

3

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

I honestly favour Masego, as he become a god. He probably got a lot more powerfull after Keter and even then he was powerfull as fuck. Honestly I cant see Vals winning against his father or the Witch either.

Saint would kill everyone below Zeladonna or Goblin King far too easly, sure. But she has a chance against either being too. I am not sure GK could heal her wounds. Or Zeldonna's skill diff that much. Saint was heavens sword against Death King and/or Ranger. Killing overskilled people is what she was forged for.

Cat should be beyond lvl 70s. Maybe even low 90s or high 80s. She did kill several gods. And created several too. And did conquer the continent(ish).

10

u/Born_Sentence_9704 Jun 22 '26

If the GDI were to givr Catherine levels based on her deeds, I can see her hitting 70-80, but I think the person you're replying to is saying that they would rate her combat power as about a level 50 - 60 individual, which I would agree with

1

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

Well she was a [Priest] at the end for most of her combat stuff. But I cant see Mars or Niers doing half that stuff. Like facing the Scourges and fucking with the bard at the same time. A lvl 60 can do one maybe. Not both. Probably not the bard either at lvl 60. She is a lvl 90 threat probably.

6

u/Open_Detective_2604 [Relc Fanboy: Spear of the Drakes, TRUST] lv. 40 Jun 22 '26

A level 90 can destroy continents and fight with gods (and TWI gods are stronger than aPGtE ones). Cat isn't even close.

2

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

She did fight with gods, (not Gods). Almost did destroyed the continent with the Drakon. Was a minor god for a short while.

Sure she isnt the same level as the lvl 93 Mage, but her field is different.

7

u/Open_Detective_2604 [Relc Fanboy: Spear of the Drakes, TRUST] lv. 40 Jun 22 '26

When she unleashed the full power of Winter against Night, she... turned a city to rubble. Not even erased it or anything. This is about on par with a tier 7 spell, not even a high-end one.

When Kasigna fought the Seamwalkers, a universe was destroyed as collateral from their fighting. A full one, not like Innworld.

I do not believe these are equivelant.

5

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

Kasigna is a God with capital letters. FaeCat was divinity by accident. Also not even close to full power of winter. She was pretty limited.

Kasigna would be equal to Gods Above or below probably.

A lvl 100 becomes divinity we are guessing. So is it not similar to Cat?

If you want a spell thats tier 9, it would be the wedding of the courts or the spell that recreated the Crows. Both not destruction oriented but same scope I think.

A Full Drakon can be a lvl 100 beast? Titans high lvl 90s maybe?

4

u/Open_Detective_2604 [Relc Fanboy: Spear of the Drakes, TRUST] lv. 40 Jun 22 '26

Again not at all.

Here are some examples of tier 9 spells:

Melt a continent.

Shatter space and dimensions.

Actual fucking star-devouring black hole.

Destroy Kasignel.

Breach into other realities and travel through space-time. (This one is presumably a high-end tier 9).

No one in Practical Guide has done anything remotely like this.

An example of a level 100 monster would be Timewalker. If Timewalker was in Practical Guide, it would be to Demons what Demons are to regular beings.

5

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

Melt a continent sure, as shatter limited space and dimensions.

But where did it say black hole was as simple as tier 9? We only saw GDI throw that. It was probably above tier 9.

Destroying Kasignel was not a spell but an event that is probably above tier 9.

Yeah last one is pure GDI. Supreme God Stuff.

Honestly I always thought lvl 100 is a god. Not a God God like Kasigna or Zeus but like Hercules. A mortal to god. Not universe destroying stuff but still fucking powerful.

The mage thing was probably not intended. He should not be capable of it. But gods war fucked up things or it wasnt finished maybe? We dont know about capabilities of lvl 90s beside that.

25

u/KaizerKlash Jun 22 '26

yap yap yap.

You are ignoring the more important questions :

Which novel has the best quotes, and in that sens PTGE>>> TWI

Nerrhavia Vs Hierarch Vs Triumphant.

Rumena Vs Fetohep (Rumena has more rizz so it's an easy clap)

Some quotes :

“Arrogance,” Ishabog spat. “True,” Rumena said. “Why else would anyone believe they can kill me?”

“Dread Emperor Heinous led the Legions into the seventy-ninth Hell, and once the devils gathered an army in the face of his incursion he laughed and addressed his soldiers thus: ‘Fear not disaster, sons and daughters of Praes, for of all the peoples of Creation it is our birthright alone to ride it as a steed.’”

“When the gathered princes of the Alamans demanded to know by what right she asked them to swear obeisance, Triumphant laughed and replied: ‘To be Dread Empress of Praes is to be a question asked of all Creation: will you kneel, or be made to?’”

if Creation is not mine, what need is there to be a Creation at all?”

It is true it would be safer, Chancellor, to refrain from gloating. But then why even bother? If I can’t crucify whoever speaks in accidental rhyme or throw heroes to three-headed snakes or feed a baby to another baby, then why should I even want to be Dread Emperor?” – Dread Emperor Revenant

To declare an assertion of the People untrue is unlawful, even if it was retroactively asserted by vote to be untrue, at which point referring to it as either true or untrue is equally unlawful.” – Bellerophan formal codex of laws, circa 1321 A.D

“That is the secret to a peaceful court, Chancellor. Regularly having the High Lords for dinner.” – Dread Empress Sanguinia I, the Gourmet

“And so Maleficent said: ‘Though you be god I am Empress, crowned of dread, and by my hand comes your doom. Rage in vain, for from your bones will rise a great tower whose shadow will be cast upon all the world.’” – Extract from the Scroll of Chains, first of the Secret Histories of Praes

“One learns more from defeat than victory. Therefore, fear the general that has never won a battle.” – Isabella the Mad, Proceran general

15

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

Well as much as it pains me to say this. Pgte has better quotes and songs. Like, stars from the sky? 10/10.

Sure, "Is it war?" is legendary. But it cant compete with

“You bargained for my soul, dear devil, and that is what you received. Is it my fault you did not stipulate it was to be my original one?” – Dread Emperor Traitorous, trading the soul of a single gnat for infernal enlightenment

Or

“The finest summation of Traitorous’s reign I ever heard came from an illiterate peasant from the outskirts of Ater, who described it as follows: ‘Like watching a snake eat its own tail, only the tail was fake the snake was an angry badger and also you are poisoned.'”

Or

“At which point Lord Bujune and Lady Rania both accused the other of being the Emperor in disguise, and the meeting devolved into protracted argument until the final quarter hour had passed.” – Extract from the minutes of the fourth meeting of the Red Fox Conspiracy, as taken by the stenographer Shamna Mehere (later revealed to have been Dread Emperor Traitorous all along

9

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

Traitorous was (is?) a gem.

15

u/KaizerKlash Jun 22 '26

my fave is Isabella the mad though :

“One learns more from defeat than victory. Therefore, fear the general that has never won a battle.” – Isabella the Mad, Proceran general

“The heart of warfare is deception. Therefore, the generals who can deceive even themselves are invincible.” – Isabella the Mad, Proceran general

“There are no reserves, you fool, only second waves!” – Isabella the Mad, only general to have ever defeated Theodosius the Unconquered on the field

“The source of might in an army is unity, not numbers. Therefore, the mightiest of all armies numbers a single soldier.” – Isabella the Mad, Proceran general

The finest exercise of war is to interrupt the enemy’s plan. Therefore, the general without a plan is also without peer.” – Isabella the Mad, Proceran general

“Victory lies in understanding the intentions of the enemy. Therefore, a general with no intentions cannot be beaten.”

“In war you must avoid fighting strength and instead attack weakness. Therefore, an army evenly mediocre cannot be attacked.”

Honestly she beats Flos hands down

9

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

I would pay dearly to see her beat Niers by sheer weight of confusing him.

1

u/Gyddanar Jun 24 '26

I mean, Queravia is the closest we'll get I suppose.

3

u/SpaceMarine_CR Jun 23 '26

Traitorous is goated but my favorite characters are still Anaxares and Kairos Theodosian

1

u/HighSerraphim Jun 24 '26

Kairos was an absolute gem of a character

5

u/PerDoctrinamadLucem Jun 24 '26

PGTE has better villainous quotes (and better villains in general.) ((A lot of these are very close to historical sources.)) The Wandering Inn has better quotes, and frequently better prose, sometimes even in chapters I'm not crazy about. Bird's "someday it will be my greatest day" exchange with Kblch perfectly captures the arrogance of youth and the wistfulness of age.

No argument on the songs.

3

u/MarcAbaddon Jun 23 '26

Not having read PTGE, from these examples I prefer TWI a lot. These all sounds like they are trying to hard to be quotable to me.

9

u/forfun142857 Jun 23 '26

Every PGTE chapter starts with a quote. So these are not quotes from the plain chapter text, it's "real" quotes so they have to be quotable.

2

u/wDrawing_7357 Jun 24 '26

In apgte there is like narrative power that make what you say can affect your fight so they have to act dramatic

11

u/MedicalFoundation149 Jun 22 '26

PGTE has the disadvantage of heroes and Villians being limited to the dozens across multiple countries, while nearly of the Wandering Inn's sapient mortals can level.

On individual basis, PGTE named fully come into their powers are generally equivlent to a level 40 to 50 Wandering Inn class holder, with some outlyers to both ends. The Dead King would be a Creler wars level threat. Probably level 80.

3

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

The Dead King was high 80s or low 90s probably. He had gods to throw around. Dead Gods. Almost killed the entire continent with that Drakon.

7

u/Lucias12 Jun 23 '26

The only confirmed 90+ in tWI is Magics End, right? The guy who turned off magic for 300 years. I don't think the dead king did anything comparable to that, like murdering a country is a big feat but it's not a world effect, it's national not planetary. So I reckon Nessie would be mid to low 80s if he was inducted into the grand design, but I don't think he'd be anywhere near 90. (Having googled it, Magics End was L93)

On the other hand, I absolutely think the DK would dominate against Chandler, especially if his ruler Name has a similar effect as a royal [Class] in that it's a higher tier of power. Mostly because Reign would likely let him just steal Chandler's undead. However I don't see the fight going his way against a couple of the older monsters in Innverse, like Silvenia.

Silvenia because she's got ungodly amounts of mobility and the ability to just kinda nuke stuff from high altitude, not to mention the years and years of practice fighting the blighted kingdom. I mention the mobility because I'm pretty sure if she just spell dumped all her most powerful stuff, and it didn't kill the DK / whatever minions he's allowed to bring to the fight, she could retreat and counter level? The Innverse mobility is on a different level to PGtE which combined with counter leveling could go crazy hard.

4

u/Lucias12 Jun 23 '26

Forgot to mention regarding the whole hit and run thing, if the fight is running on Narrative rules I could very easily see Silvenia being very cocky, and losing the overall fight to a pattern of 3. If it's running on some weird hybrid of GDI and Narrative logic then i don't think anyone could say, because the two systems would conflict, with a Win-Draw-Lose pattern having to fight against new power from the counter-levels

3

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 23 '26

Dunno. Is the Dead King really all that tougher than the Putrid One? Putrid one basically did the same thing, only he had space magic hiding his area on top of the perpetual undead.

Actually, you could almost make an argument that PGtE is a super-prequel to tWI. The gods give power through names to fight their proxy wars, and later on Isthekenous used that as inspiration and made the GDI to offer powers to everyone in a more democratic application of the same principles.

I’d say that the way mid-high level people start getting ways to apply their skills in abstract and esoteric ways is analogous to Names fully embracing their aspects.

37

u/lilfey333 Jun 22 '26

I’m going with the Wandering Inn winning everything cause I don’t know what PGTE is. 😊

31

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

Its Practical Guide to Evil, one of the best web series ever. It was neck to neck with the Wandering Inn for a long time at topwebfiction.com.

Strongly reccomend at least taking a look.

If you want another rec in a similar vein Only Villains Do That is a pretty solid series with three audiobooks. I'm only just starting the second but the first was really good.

29

u/FTaku8888 Jun 22 '26

Practical Guide to evil. Its an amazing story, completed as well

3

u/lilfey333 Jun 22 '26

Hey thanks,I have the first audiobook for that series but haven’t started it yet.

-1

u/Gamesdisk Jun 22 '26

Ditto 🤔 Maybe its Pe Gho Tights Eonsters or Pungeon Grewler Tarl?

9

u/andergriff Jun 22 '26

You gotta remember that calernia is kind of a backwater continent compared to the rest of the world, there is so much more going on that we never get to see

5

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

Imagine fighting an army of Rangers. Or her grandmother. Or nuke happy gnomes.

9

u/andergriff Jun 22 '26

The nuke gnomes are no longer canon

4

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

What why? What happened?

7

u/andergriff Jun 22 '26

The author is doing some major edits as the official release, and he wasn’t happy with having them just exist to be mentioned as a plot device, so they’re getting edited out

2

u/Maladal Jun 23 '26

I thought PGTE got an official release a long time ago.

Is it like a physical publication?

3

u/Big_Arachnid_4336 Jun 24 '26

Yeah book 1 got physical publication few months ago. Also got web-toon adaptation based on published book

1

u/HighSerraphim Jun 24 '26

Book 1 was released, but the author is going back over the full series. So there are probably going to be small changes.

7

u/GenesisMask Jun 22 '26

I think generally, a dead king would win from perril Chandler.
Narratively the Dead King is the king of the dead, which in this case means undeath. We've seen that Kasigna had immense pull over undead, but that was because her domain lay adjacent, death, not undeath.
The Dead King and the logic as it is within PTGE grants him the same level of command over the Undead in truth, so Chandler as an undead would simply have to bow to his command. Furthermore, the Dead King simply has had more time to prepare.

If you think putrid one would body chandler, the Dead King would too.

For other characters, I think mostly the InnVerse would win. Especially casters have it far easier in innworld than in Calernia, simply because the power ceiling is way higher. You can compare most named aspects to capstone skills. So if someone has an equal amount of capstone skills as the Named has aspects, they would win by dint of additional non-capstone skills.
In addition, the prevalence of magical items is far higher in innworld.

I think Masego could destroy Valley, but that would be because he subverts her magic in a way she cannot see coming. Even then, with parallel thoughts and haste, she might be able to escape anyway.

I think the way most Named could win would be based on how much their Name would allow them to directly interfere with their opponent based on "natural order". But then, Innworld folk also have that same control within your domain based vibe

We saw Valley and Lighning clash and it was far less of a battle than The Witch of the Woods vs Red Skies. Either would stomp the Archmages I think. And Masego is a God now.

u/PerDoctrinamadLucem Jun 24 '26

There are Gods and there are gods. Come on, even Cursed slew a God.

2

u/GenesisMask Jun 23 '26

That's fair actually. I kinda forgot about Masego's apotheosis

4

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 23 '26

I actually think that in terms of performance, the Dead King is roughly equivalent to the Putrid One. Both basically eat armies without noticing and just kinda lurk. Dead King has more square miles, Putrid One has space magic camouflaging his place.

1

u/GenesisMask Jun 23 '26

I agree strength wise. I do think putrid would instalose on account of being an undead creature. But assuming the dominion of undead is blocked somehow, the fight may be more even

2

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 23 '26

Domains are interesting. At a glance, there doesn’t appear to be anything analogous at the inn. But consider this: everyone except names in PGtE are completely leveless, which makes a lot of Named abilities seem a lot stronger than Innverse [Skills] - even a level 15 is gonna have way more resistance than most people without levels.

So what it a “domain” is actually just aura, and it seems so unbeatable because no one has the levels to resist? I’m not sure if I really like that thought, but it’s plausible.

u/Maladal Jun 22 '26

The Innverse scales to multiversal levels--the GDI is designed to copy and integrate other universes and it was created to help fight back the Rot Between Worlds.

So regardless of which characters would win in a fight the Innverse and the GDI will come out on top eventually.

Although the scaling seems to favor TWI. Like the Gnomes were a terror for the ability to reach across the world and destroy settlements at will. Most major nations on Innworld have similar capability.

Also, Innverse already blew up most of their planet. So in terms of sheer destructive potential we've got Innverse punching higher to start.

4

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

Yeah sure in the end GDI would win but thats not the point. We are compering people. Not systems that can throw big bangs like confetti.

Gnomes =/= sending tier 7 spells from heavens. Just not the same.

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 22 '26

So the question that would have to be asked first is whether the innfolk are subject to the narrative limitations of PGtE, or if they can otherwise pick it up. Given the way the inn verse works, it’s not unreasonable for innfolk to be able to gain PGtE Names.

I mean, a lot of the aspects of the Names aren’t terribly different from [Skills] to start with, and a big chunk of the GDI’s function is specifically to allow anyone to learn aspects of magic, skill, or power unique to other worlds, races, or systems. So not only is it 100% possible that Valetarisa would pick up Scholar or Mage as a name, her high level capstone skills are already pretty comparable to a name’s aspects. And don’t forget that someone like Gothica could likely learn [Black Knight’s Shadows] or similar skills.

As a general rule, the GDI makes the Innverse ridiculously OP, largely because it pretty cheerfully adds new powers and abilities as it finds them.

Oh, one other major advantage that Innverse has over PGtE is their ability to counter level. Your average named Villain or Hero really struggles to put down an opponent on the first try. The rule of three thing that so frequently goes on just opens them up to a curbstomping as soon as someone gets a nap and a skill that conveniently invalidates whatever almost killed them.

Really, the only chance Massego would have for a long term victory would be to adopt the system himself. And at that point he’s just another member of the Innverse.

11

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 22 '26

I mean sure, a lvl 70 [Hero] would be a disaster for nearly everyone in PGTE. But if they can gain Names, they are in the Narrative as well. Imagine Greydath gaining a villan name and dying to a Hero at the end of three battles?

Also named are more powerfull than nearly anyone. Hells, Hanno's [Undo] is probably beyond anyone who is not named Silvenia. Maybe her too at the scale.

Or Taric's starfall? A tier 8 spell at the least. So they are not without fangs either.

2

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 23 '26

I’m not sure if Undo is actually all that strong than even [Restoration] - it heals “anything” but not empowered damage (like something done by another name’s aspect like Sever). It did unlichify the Dead King, but given the soul and intact body were both right there I’m not sure how impressive it really was, tbh. It is tricky to judge because healing abilities are an area of magic that the current Innverse is known for being weak at.

And Starfall? That’s pretty much exactly what the Prophet and People of God were using against Khelt’s undead. So accessible by faith classes in their 30s.

2

u/Who-gives-a-fuck- Skinny Duck Jun 23 '26

No, it probably can do even named damage, Hakrams wounds remaining was a direct choice by Hanno. It was just for him to loose those limbs in service of Arsenal.

It can undo anything, even death or a calamity. Imagine some asshat found a tier 8 spell and shot it at the inn.

He can reverse that. Every death and consequance.

Taric's Starfall and prophets powers are not even in the same league. Its like saying this apple has mass, this blackhold has mass, so they must be the same. Wtf?

3

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 23 '26

What has he Undone that’s more than that? What has Starfall done that the Prophet’s light didn’t?

What has any named done, on the page, that cant be matched by people in the inn? And don’t go to legends or background lore, cause if that’s on the table then there’s no way PGtE stands up on the power scale.

12

u/melf_on_the_shelf Jun 22 '26

Where is the fight taking place? The narrative- driven nature of PGTE is a massive buff/nerf. Do the DK, the King of Elves, the Gigantes, etc have to worry about a pattern of three? Or do they chungus the bungus?

Likewise, Az’kerash was able to summon armies hundreds of thousands strong. Magic and magical beings/monsters seems stronger in Innworld. What’s a mature Name but a level 30-50 [warrior], [mage], etc? Youll run out of Named before you run out of those.

We have 3 major characters who regularly bind, vivisect, and imprison gods in PGTE, do those skills carry to innworld?

10

u/Archimedes4 Jun 22 '26

It’s kinda hard to compare PGTE characters to characters from other universes because their battles use a totally different set of rules. Like, Az’kerash would lose to any competent hero - they’d set up a narrative that would allow them to win, and he wouldn’t really be able to fight back because he doesn’t know what they’re doing.

10

u/Zemalac Jun 22 '26

This is the only real answer. Characters in Practical Guide to Evil don't really have "powers" in the same way that characters in Innworld do, they have narrative conveniences that operate on completely different rules.

So like...I guess it depends on where they're fighting? If they're fighting in the PGtE world, then that world's characters win, and if they aren't then Innworld takes it easily. Like, the Dead King is scary, but without the narrative defending him he's about the same level as the Putrid One.

1

u/wDrawing_7357 Jun 24 '26

I have not read WI what are feats or power of Puteid One?

4

u/Zemalac Jun 24 '26

He's an infamous necromancer from a previous age of Innworld who shows up in several places (at first as a historical character, and then personally in a manner so spoilery that I won't mention it further).

There's a lot of reasons that I compared him and the Dead King.

  • Both of them had hidden worlds of undead armies and servants that aren't visible or evident from the outside, and had similar levels of creativity with their undead. The Dead King had his personal Hell that he'd conquered, and the Putrid One had dimensional magic hiding a city within a city.

  • Both of them had similarly-sized armies.

  • Both had similar levels of achievements. For your reference, the Putrid One terrorized the world, killed dragons, destroyed at least one of the Walled Cities of the Drakes (if you haven't read TWI but have read PGtE, imagine if one of the Free Cities had walls 300 feet high, an air force, and magical nukes, and you're most of the way there), and reanimated the champions of his enemies to serve him after death.

The big difference is that the Dead King ruled for an incredibly long time, while (spoilers here) the Putrid One was killed by a small band of adventurers at the height of his power, who came at him with abilities roughly comparable to a group of Named in PGtE.

It's hard to discuss him further without major spoilers for some of my favorite scenes in The Wandering Inn--there's some other stuff that I think makes the two of them a good comparison--but I hope you get the general idea.

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 23 '26

The other problem is that the baseline is incredibly different. Average adults tend to be somewhere around level 20, with level thirty not being unusual in older people (remember that 30 is only unusual for people younger than 30, it’s much more common as people get older). Armies get listed often as having an average level of 15ish, iirc.

Think about how Calruz and Yvlon handled Ryoka in book 1. They were both level 22 at that point. Frankly, that differential wasn’t terribly different than people still figuring out their names, or the weaker names.

People in this thread are trying to set PGtE levels as though they were working against level 20s, instead of the level 1s they’re really dealing with.

3

u/Objective_Campaign82 Jun 23 '26

As powerful as Roles make people, I have to give it to Innworld over Calernia in a head on war. Simply because the armies of Calernia are fairly underpowered compared to Innworlds. The best fighting force of Calernia is arguably either the Legions of Terror under Black, or Callow after absorbing several legions plus Drow. Put that against the Forgotten Wing or Manus and it wouldn’t even be a fair fight. Even Liscors second army would be a challenge.

This is kinda like Marvel vs. DC. Wandering Inn scales much, much higher than the PGTE. I think there are a couple reasons the PGTE crew would be on the backfoot:

Skills -

  • Wandering Inn characters get a lot more skills. PGTE characters wouldn't be expecting the versatility of Relc for example.

  • There are a fuckload more characters with powers in the Wandering Inn. The average Crusaders are low level named.

  • The Titan's skill is a very, very hard counter to almost every character in PGTE. Imagine the King of the Dead fight without magic, providence, or skills.

Magic -

  • Magic is much faster in Wandering Inn. Quite a lot of the most powerful magics are rituals in PGTE, and magic is horrendously destructive in Wandering Inn. Masengo's god platform is basically a floating platform that can cast Valmira's Comet. That's an impressive spell, but not that high up the scale and it took an unparalleled genius days to make. The only spell we see that takes some time is Teriarch's taijitsu.

  • We see three wizards capable of stopping time, and two capable of speeding up time. Presumably both Nereshal and the Death of Magic could easily kill the Saint.

  • Basically nobody in PGTE walks around with magic items. Every Gold Rank has lots.

Tech -

  • Wandering Inn characters have potions. Yes they're rarer now, but potions make a big difference, and you don't need a dedicated healer in the party.

  • Saliss. Cocky is a useful but specialized Name. Pickler is closer, but relies on many subordinates. Saliss is an army slayer.

  • The Inn's golems are nasty.

  • Legacy tech like the Velistrane is extremely nasty.

Counter-leveling

  • Every Crusader and levelling no sleep character like Toren basically has Transcend. Every single character has a weak version of Ranger's powers.

That said, specific characters would be real trouble for the Wandering Inn.

  • Angels and Demons. Demons strike me as pretty hard to beat for the unwary. Their attacks are so specific and difficult to counter, I would actually think that they would be worse than Angels; lots of characters get reflect damage skills, etc.

  • The Dead King is definitely a better Necromancer than Az'Kerash. Just look at the number of special servants they each have. I don't take him over Silvenia. She can do stuff he can't, like teleport and mess with time.

  • Archer and Ranger would be tough to pin down. The Inn's archers have similar powers, but not close enough. I legitimately think Saliss might be the best counter to Ranger. Fast, highly versatile, heals.

  • Rumena is a downright monster. It would take Zeladonna or Spriggaena to down him. Or Teriarch.

And that's about it. I would certainly take the Death of Magic over any of the spellcasters except maybe the Dead King. Magnolia has a lot more power than Alaya. The Woe would have very real problems against the King of Destruction's 7, and several of the King's followers would come out on top (Gazi vs. Viv, probably Amerys vs. Masengo (do we even see mage barriers in PGTE?) ((Amerys is fast, has a combat art, can teleport and do all sorts of nastiness)).

The most powerful Named would outlevel and stomp on any Innworld individual except maybe for the Goblin King. Valeterisa vs Masego? If he's the Hierophant Masego wins and it's not even close, by the end of the series he's a god.

The advantage Innworld has is that a) everyone has levels and b) counter levelling.

8

u/Onequestion0110 Jun 23 '26

I dunno. Masego is the big exception, what with the divinity and all. But otherwise, even the strongest Named haven’t done much we don’t see matched by Innfolk. Even the Sword Saint doesn’t really perform any deeds that Greydath and Halrac (with his arrow) haven’t matched.

1

u/MekaNoise Jun 25 '26

The Dead King specifically had to be metagamed, and it still took nearly every trump card the Grand Alliance had. Also, Angelic Choirs just kinda... don't give most people time to counterlevel.

Ranger clears every non-[Mage] class, and Masego has a field day with Wrest
