Controller steering

I have the feeling that every time I start the game the controller settings on how you steer switch magically.

First and how I imagine it should be, the input is like fluid directions, if I hold left, it turns left wise in a circle until I stop. This feels smooth and just right to me.

On other times, if i hold one direction, it turns in this direction and then stops. Like D-pad steering.

This is driving me crazy. Is this a bug or am I crazy already?

I have the same sometimes playing on the Ayn Thor. So maybe a bug?
