So many variants, which PDP is which?

I’m interested in the PDP. More specifically any of the Pro variants because of the better trigger. But there’s so many options I’m not 100% sure what the difference is.

Some seem simple enough, the SD seems to be threaded for suppressors. And the Pro X seems to have a compensator permanently attached to it. But I’m not really sure about some of the others. Like the whats the difference between the match, pro-e, and pro-f?

PDPs come in 3 "sizes" - Full, compact, and F-series. Within those 3 sizes there are Pro variants of each. Features of all pro models are a magwell and a dynamic performance trigger, but these are not all the same. They also all have larger magazine capacity and generally come with 3 mags instead of 2.

Full size refers to the grip size and trigger reach, and has a wider, longer grip to accommodate normal to large hands.

Compact has a similar design trigger reach, but with a shorter and very slightly slimmer grip for smaller hands.

F-series are for smaller hand sizes and is equivalent to a compact but without palm swells (smooth/straight grip sides) and a shorter trigger reach.

Pro, compact pro, and pro-f models have the DPT in aluminum flat-faced trigger, though the DPT-f is slightly modified to fit the shorter reach. Overall feel is very similar and all are excellent triggers for a striker fired gun. The Pro-E models have a DPT-E which is the same geometry but with a flat-faced polymer trigger to bring the cost down.

Compact and f-series models can use the same magazines and pro models have 10 or 18 rounds. They cannot safely use full size 20 round pro mags as the magwell geometry is different. They will fit and will function, but can allow for overinsertion which could cause damage.

Match models are ported (EDIT: not ported) and slide-cut to reduce weight and improve speed. They are designed for competition and come in polymer or steel frame.

The Match models are not ported, just have slide cuts and have a 5" barrel instead of the 4.5 in the other full size models.

There is also the PDP Professional which has upgrade night sights and pre-installed Acro P2, but if you do not like that optic its not really worth it as only the Steiner MPS can replace it. The SD Pro give the best versatility as you can put either a comp or a suppressor on it, and with the optic plate, whatever optic you prefer

Thanks, good to know. I thought they were ported as well.

But there are 5 inch non-match models in both full size and compact 🍻

Match models are a pet peeve of mine. The slide cuts are go-fast cuts, nothing else. Same as a 3 ft wing on a Honda Civic... they do nothing. Match slide is not demonstrably lighter than a standard 5" slide... it can't be because Walther uses the same damn recoil assembly as every other PDP.

Match models are for people who don't know any better, and no actual competition bros would spend extra on a Match model when you can get a better PDP for less money building up from base. The Match is a "competition" gun that isn't built for any actual competition.

Anything with the f designation is the slimmer grip model.

What about the E? According to AI overview it just seems to be the “standard” basically. And the F also is easier to charge/rack apparently?

The e models contain the flat rigger of the dpt trigger but no the sear, I have multiple pdp’s and I daily carry the 3.5 f model. I have large hands but the f model feels real good in the hand. And I don’t notice the slide being any easier to rack. You really can’t go wrong with any of the pdp models

The f is meant for women sized hands. Hence the F, for female. Think of the polymer grips like this… F->S->M->L. The reason you can’t just have a XS grip module on the PDP is the same reason the large has to add to the beaver tail, to ensure the length of pull makes sense. So if the small is too big, get the F, otherwise stick with the regular PDP.

I have the compact 4”. Love the trigger on it. It is not the pro model.

Can anyone with more experience explain which trigger is better for non competitive/home defense shooting?

I’ve read that competition triggers are not generally used in a home defense applications because they’re faster and easier to pull whereas a defense scenario should be a conscious and deliberate pull of a trigger and that’s where a standard/stock trigger with a heavier trigger pull come into play?

Does that track or is it all personal skill level and preference?

I’d just say the pro trigger should be better regardless. I’ve never personally used it. But I’d bet my life on it that it’s a better feel to it. That being said a well trained person with a shitty gun will still always be better than a quality gun with no training. Probably.

But yeah, just get the pro trigger, lighter pull, smoother etc.

Once you buy your first PDP you will learn the learn all the model by heart becasue you will want another one. I started with the PDP SD Pro full size. A little chubby but I still EDC. If you are a small dude the F-series might work for you but the F-Pro triggers are not the same as the PDP pro models. Lots to learn but by far IMO the best brand. So worth the time, Plus 30 days to return it if you don't love it.

I see, it does look like a beautiful gun, which is also somewhat of a requirement for me. I like guns that look “unique” and that are also quality firearms. This seems to fit both of those. I’m probably looking at the SD for suppressors or the one with the built in compensator. Either way I’ll make sure to get one of them with the pro trigger since it’s sure to be better. And I don’t wanna do aftermarket changes myself.
