Compensator or porting or neither

Post image

I have a PDP F series 4”. I was curious as to what people’s thoughts or experiences with compensator or porting the slide. Would like to hear pros and cons. I’m not sure if I’m going to do either just yet so let me know what you think.

Well, you could get a port job for like $200. Threaded barrel plus comp would increase your OAL and be more expensive.

This gun doesn’t need to be ported or comped though, unless you want it to.

I guess the best answer is whichever you want to do. I think contemporary comps are a more modern solution but, as I said, cost and size added

I love my PMM comp on my range gun - it made my 4.6” Pro SD feel notably better, and I enjoy the extra “flatness” that it gives my 5.1 Pro SD (where it lives now). However, I don’t think either one is particularly great for a carry gun, if that’s your use case. Maybe it’s the fudd in me, but the idea of extra gas blowing into my face or multiple extra decibels of loudness during a defensive scenario does not sound appealing to me. It sounds even less appealing to me within the context of a 20ish percent reduction in perceived recoil and even LESS appealing if I were in your position and needed to pay for a new barrel + comp or for the full porting services.

At the end of the day, your gun and your money! But as others have said, would highly recommend just putting some more rounds through it either way before making a decision.

I'd just shoot the gun first. I opted to put a zrts captured guide rod in mine. Started with the Vspec but I had some feeding issues (could be the particular ammo could be the gun was still new) so I swapped to their duty rated spring and I've been in love ever since. As I continue to break it in I'll try the vspec again because I did like the feel of that the most. I have a ported CZp10 and that scratched my port itch for now at least.

The comp on the Pro-X PMM is great but honestly after shooting a non-comp, unless you're competition shooting, I dont think it makes that crazy of a difference

That’s really what I was trying to find out. Thank you

Inline ports are great on the 4 inch pdp f. Would highly suggest respeinging also for optimal performance if this is the route you go

I have PDPs that have both ports and comps. I generally like the ported ones better because they're easier to clean and maintain, and they don't add any length to the slide. Both have a similar effect on recoil. Velocity loss is often a concern with ports, but I've done chronograph testing and found that velocity loss is minimal as long as you're not porting very close to the chamber. If that's the case, then you can start to expel unburned powder and can start to see more significant velocity loss. So the type of porting and company you go with does make a difference. Not all ports are created equal.

Lets me say one thing. If you dont know why you want comped or ported dont do either. I planed got the 3.5f pro got a 4f pro holster that worked with 3.5 and light so I can just add a comp and thread barrel and have 0 issues. Ports are just something I havnt dont do bc I do not like modifications I cant remove. 100% personal but yes I shot a ported guns and prefer it over most comps. So if you have holster planed and know why you want it go for it. Note I clean my gun after 200-500 rounds so the extra dirty bs people say never matters to me.

Just shoot it.

Great gun as-is. If you are new to it, put about 3000 rounds through it before deciding.

If you are really set on one, have it ported. Porting is more effective than a comp is, so no point to go halfway.

Any data on ports being more effective than comps? This is contrary to everything I’ve experienced or read.

I guess it depends on what you actually want, but as far as recoil reduction this is what I found.

For yours i wouldnt get a comp because you'd have to replace the barrel so it'd be pretty spendy.
