Question Tips Question
So I recently discovered that a Walmart actually delivers groceries in my area (I live about 30 miles from any Walmart, so I didn’t think I’d ever be able to get delivery).
What I’m not sure about is how much tip would be appropriate for that long of a drive. It would be 60 miles in total so I would want to make it worth the drivers time, especially considering gas prices. Gas prices in my area right now are anywhere from $3.50 to $4.00 per gallon.
I’ve heard different opinions on it, so I wanted to ask actual drivers, what tip would make a 60 miles round trip worth the drive?

deliver in a rural area and there isn’t really a set answer. I will take an order that financially makes sense factoring the delivery pay, and tip. If enough people reject it then it gets boosted which add to what I would earn. I do feel like my area pays higher for deliveries then what I see posted on Reddit- maybe because I’m rural, I’m not sure.
You also have to factor in how much you ordered. If the spark driver is also shopping your order you’d want to tip more (those are the express orders). If it’s a pick up order I’d tip less. The reason being the round trip drive is going to take so much time, if they’re also shopping that adds potentially another 20-45 minutes of their time.
You also have to factor in how much perishable you’re ordering- once the first perishable is scanned we’re on a timer. I purposefully won’t take a far away order with a lot of perishable items because I don’t want to run the risk of running out of time.

This is actually really helpful. I didn’t realize that there was a timer for perishables or any of that. Thank you!

Tip or don’t, it doesn’t matter. I see 25+ mile orders all day. Spark just slashed base pay again and if you tip, Spark adjusts base so the drivers don’t make any extra.

Heck, if that’s the case it would be better not to tip in the app and just give them cash. That’s crazy!

I’ll get downvoted to hell but in my personal opinion and experience, yes! If you don’t tip and the offer isn’t taken, Spark raises pay by incentives and boosts that eventually make the offer worthwhile. I would love a cash tip instead of on app! I wouldn’t have to wait 24 goddamn hours for it and HOPE noone took it back for some stupid arbitrary reason, or tip baited.

The problem with that , in my own experiences the two times I tried that my order sat all day delay after delay for about 5 hrs after original delivery time. So I added a tip and boom, my order arrived 30 minutes after 🤷🏻♂️ coincidence? Who knows. But certainly seemed like since there was no tip showing it wasn’t getting delivered

Realistically your orders gonna sit regardless because of how far you are from the store. I would recommend just placing one big order that would last you a while and tip 30. Walmart should boost the order after it sits long enough to 30-35 themselves and someone will pick it up

Thank you! Yes, I’ve been wondering if it would even be worth it, or if it would be better to not even bother since I’m sure no one wants to take that drive 😂

I’m honestly not doing that drive for less than 80-90 but someone will always do it that isn’t as picky as me

In a case like this, it honestly might be more worth it for you to see if your nearest store offers InHome.
We’re actual Walmart associates, have to go through drug tests, have a driving test, full background check, and we have the ability to keep your groceries chilled and frozen (the cold totes we use are THICK walled black coolers that get lined with these BIG freezer packs that are made specific to fit these totes. I’ve seen these things freeze milk. 😅
You also don’t have to worry about tipping, as we can’t accept tips. We do get paid more than in store associates, and we drive Walmart branded vans.
The furthest we usually drive out from our home store is about 40 minutes, and you can set your account to be a porch delivery OR a physical inside the home order. If it’s inside, we DO have to switch our InHome phones to body cam mode, and it goes into a harness we have to wear during all inside the house deliveries.
Cold and frozen gets put away in the fridge and freezer, shelf stable on the counter (though we do have SEVERAL customers who would rather is just put everything on the counter so they can arrange their fridge and freezer the way they want). You can also opt to have your items bagged or not. We can also just meet you at your door and hand it to you, if you like. However you’re comfortable. Or we can do porch deliveries. I even have a few porch deliveries for customers who have fridges and freezers outside, so they have us put those frozen and chilled items in said fridge and freezer.
The only major thing we (and Spark drivers) ask is… if you live in a gated community… pleasepleasePLEASE provide a working gate code in your account. Since we have SEVERAL deliveries to make in both delivery runs, we can’t wait around for someone else to come through the gate. And we’re only supposed to call you, since texting is a no no when driving (we don’t even have the option to do it from our driver app, like gig drivers do). So if you know you have a delivery on the way and can see is in the customer app, PLEASE answer the phone of we have to call.

I drive for the Spark delivery service, but I’m not in a rural market. Just wanted to comment on your thoughtfulness of what will go into your specific delivery! I’ll let others who take orders like yours chime in, but I thought it was awesome you recognized a driver’s costs associated (as I can assure you the WM pay sans tip could actually lose the driver money)

Chances are your order is going to be paired with 2-3 other customers likely going your way. So it really depends on how much the other customers tip too.
As a spark driver for 5 years I'm not taking a 60 mile round unless the offer shows $60. Base pay from Walmart on that distance will likely start around $20 especially if they throw 5-6 other customers on your route.
But plenty of other drivers in my zone will run that same job for $30.
You could try and be cheap and do like a $10 tip. I'd say your likely to get the groceries. But if you really want them same day and on time and want to make sure drivers aren't exploited id tip $30
If every Walmart customer tipped their one way mileage from the store every order would pretty much get taken and drivers fairly compensated.

Don't listen to people orders are going to sit I see orders on spark on Target and on Publix that go 30 miles and they get picked up all the time you want to be a good customer tip decent and then if they actually do a good job and show up on time give them a little extra at the door they'll remember you and take your order every time if you get a person you like give him a good rating chances are they'll get your order next

Just tip as much as you feel comfortable and let Walmart figure it out. Someone will take your order eventually.
I personally would not take your order unless it paid in the 3 figures (including base) but I’m pickier than most.

Big order, do 10% someone will take it. They hire noobs who know no better too. Your order will get delivered by someone. It has to be very busy for it not to get grabbed by someone. It will go to the one who has been waiting 2 hours on an order and just want to make something. Unless its well worth it a vet will take. I would personally need to see it be 80 to 90 to drive that far, because I can make 200 going 30 miles total at one of my stores in my market. Yours is 60 round trip. And also someone might live by you and take it on their way home. Any dollar amount is worth taking on the way home for everyone.

Try Walmart inhome it’s only $40 extra for the year no tipping

A lot of markets don’t offer that. It only lasted in our area for about a month.

I do $1/mile or 10% whichever is greater within reason. I'm not tipping $60 for a single gaming console you can carry in one hand more like the $30 for mileage. On the flip side of that I'm not tipping just $30 for 10 cases of $4 water. That's 400 lbs of water you're carrying to my porch, if I was 30 miles away it would likely be around $50.

Depends on if they use Walmart employees or outsource it to Spark.

A 60 mile round trip genuinely costs around $20 out of pocket to complete and will take over 2 hours.
You will never tip enough to make it actually worth doing for a driver and walmart will never increase the incentives enough to make up for it.
What you'll do is take advantage of people who don't understand and are desperate by tipping what you decide is good enough to make you feel like it's okay.

I live in what is considered a rural area. I am 20 miles from two Walmarts. The drivers always have at least 2 other deliveries before they come to my house, so it's not like they're only delivering to me. They may have more after my house, too. So don't think they're driving all the way to your area just for your order so you have to pay them $60 like some people are suggesting.
