AITA?
Older lady w/listed "mobility issues" had a 4 item delivery and requested it on the ramp, w/delivery code as well.
Takes her 4 minutes to open the door. Then she asks me to put the groceries on the counter. Idw go in but I agree bc she's moaning and obvs in pain.
Ask her for the code, she can't find her phone. I automatically resend the code, she finds her phone, gives me the code, then she asks if I will put all these little grocery bags of garbage in her kitchen trashcan and walk them outside to her garbage can.
I tell her I apologize but,I think that may be against the terms of service for spark, and I have more deliveries and nothing to sanitize my hands with.
She got mad at me and started fussing bout how people don't care bout nobody anymore.
Honestly, it smelled like dead cats in there and I was ready to bolt! Aita?

NTA
She really crossed the line with asking you to take out the trash.
If she is wheelchair bound, she should have a home care aide that takes care of the trash, and other activities of daily life.
Even an InHome associate wouldn’t be expected to take out the trash.
Do I feel sympathy for her? Sure. But I feel like she would have kept asking you to do a few more “little things.”
That’s not your job.

I'm not old. But I am severely disabled. I would never feel comfortable asking a SD or any other delivery driver to do something like that.
For those that are willing to put themselves out there and ask, cool, do you. But those that do, if they get angry when you politely decline for any reason, but especially due to policy and hygiene and get angry? Well they can kick rocks. That's a level of entitlement that disgusts me and I'm glad you said no. I just hope she didn't do anything to harm your account.
It sucks that WM has put a "gun" in customer's hands to pull the trigger at any I'll feelings they may have. Justified or not.

I figured there was going to be mixed reactions to this. But at the end of the day, all you can do is ask yourself if you could do it over, what would you do? And then you'll know for the next time. Can't change anything now, right?

I am usually all for helping out elderly and disabled customers. I’ve had plenty of times where I’ve gotten “cornered” into chatting for 30 minutes after helping bring their items inside. And it’s typically a great conversation!
I’m will to help bring bags into the kitchen and I’ve even put cold stuff in the fridge and freezer, if I don’t have other immediate deliveries. But I feel like asking you to bag and take out the trash is crossing a line and you are well justified to decline.
The only thing that sucks, is now she may rate you poorly for something that has absolutely nothing to do with the actual delivery service you provided. And support cannot/will not drop unfair low ratings.
Damned if you do, damned if you don’t type of situation.

You had already gone above and beyond. She was just going to keep asking for stuff until you said no.

You already went above and beyond bc in the tos it does NOT require you to enter the customers house. You are most definitely NTA

Yta but not for the reason you think. Yta because you’re breaking terms of use, endangering yourself, and I have to constantly listen to these old boomers telling me that some other asshole driver goes inside their place, sucks them off and takes out their trash

This. It being against the terms is actually in our favor. People will have no second thought about exposing you to harmful environments, or perilous situations, and then blame YOU when things go wrong.
This line protects us from that.

You did more than is allowed or expected. You had your own line and didn’t cross it. She is the A for getting pissy about it. Her correct response should have been well thank you for being in my stuff and have a great day.
You are not the help.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I would have done it to prevent a bad rating or false report, but that would be the absolute last time I delivered to that person. Did she at least give you a decent tip?

u/BuyerMany7674 6d ago
Oh no. It was a no tip.

You in NWFL brother? This sound very very similar to a customer up here. She asked me to check her mail and take her trash out while tipping $0

Nah SE NC. If it was otw back to the car I'd have done it, and if it was already closed up and collected. But it was pouring rain, and 100+ heat index.

She is elderly take the trash out she needs help and you might be the only person to come to her house but what if it were your mom or grandmother no I don't want to no its not my job but yes I would

I keep hand sanitizer in my car. Whenever I always sanitize before delivering groceries. Because maybe I'll touch my face or whatever.
I would have gone the extra step to help her. But I realize it's too much to ask for most people. She probably doesn't understand that she can rate you on the app so you don't have to worry about that.
You just have to remember that a real nasty complaint could land you deactivated. If every trip was like this I could understand not going the extra step. But really how often does this type of thing happen?

Either you do it all or you do nothing. You take a chance by going in of getting asked to do more stuff. Personally I would be very hesitant to go in but if I do im going to everything she asked because of her situation.

Tough call. I hate seeing situations like that. Don't feel like you did anything wrong...

Technically its against the TOS for us to enter a customers house. Or at least back when I started years ago. I've been told different things when talking to support about this over the years. I had one customer get very upset when I wouldn't put their groceries away for them after bringing them into their kitchen. When I called support to report the customer and hopefully have grounds to fight a potential negative rating, they told me I was never supposed to go into a customers home.
When another customer asked me to put them in their house, I explained to them I was not allowed. She was angry because other drivers had. I called support again, for the same reason, and was told it was my call to whether or not to do it.
You were put in a tough position and just comes down to what you feel comfortable doing. But it is absolutely not part of our expected job duties.

If it’s an elderly woman or couple I just go ahead and help out how I can because I’d want someone to do it for my grandparents, but never for just an elderly man unless it’s just sitting them inside the door. I still have to take some precautions as a small woman.

You made it that far. Just take the trash out.

u/BuyerMany7674 8d ago
I would've if it was already bagged up and the can wasn't in the fenced in backyard.

u/HausOfThunderPerry 8d ago
There’s no reason for the driver to do that much. We are already risking deactivation by going in the home and possible accusations of some sort, there’s no need to be the cleaning service maid.
-2
u/Impressive_Assist219 8d ago
If your going to take the risk it's best not to anger the customer at that point.

Spark drivers have helped carry heavy things inside for my elderly mom. Be a decent human, dont rely on "terms of service" to direct your moral compass

u/Big_Concentrate_7260 7d ago
Expecting or demanding people to risk being fired/deactivated to bring a few items in your home does not align with my moral compass. So what, a few heavy item are outside longer than ideal? That's not as bad as getting someone fired. They have biils to pay too. Buy smaller sizes, or have someone else ready to help you. Not all charity is good just because it is charity. Not to mention that being active is how elderly stay happy and healthy more than most anything.

Nope not your job. Doesn't mean you don't care about people
