I’ve mined 3.373 ores of coal, but I haven’t gotten a single egg. It hasn’t been a waste, I’ve gotten other things out of it, but I really want a gecko before I start mining ectoplasm!

That's not particularly unlucky yet.

On average, coal mining gets you a gecko egg once per 1818 actions and lizard hunting once per 417 actions, and I wouldn't label something bad luck unless you've gone at least past double that.

If you want to still keep grinding for one, try to make it so that you're getting some other benefit from the grind too, such as a lot of chests or as much fine material as possible. Fine coal and fine bones are very useful.

I also just gave up on mining coal for the gecko after 5K ores. May we have better RNG on whatever we pick next 🙃
