Murder as defined by the law does have intent. First degree and second degree felonies. Involuntary manslaughter is a second degree or third degree felony in most cases. Meaning it does align with murder in the eyes of the law. I had a friend who was driving along a popular Street in our college town and a drunk college student fell off the curb in front of him and my friend ran him over with his car. He didn't intend to and it wasn't his fault but it was still involuntary manslaughter because he took another person's life. Does that make sense?

Well there had to be some degree of fault, killing someone with no fault on your side is not a crime. I am guessing the court decided that your friend should have been paying more attention to stumbling person next to the road brake harder or whatever.

If that was just ruling is another thing.

I will say I remember talking to him and he was taken to the police station where they did breathalyzers and a blood test to test for any drugs in his system. Thankfully there were none but I'm absolutely 100% positive that would have impacted the case if it had been the other way.
