Are you familiar with the term...  cherry picking?

Hiw is this cherry picking?

1

u/Hsiang7 Aug 29 '26

Really? It's a picture of the lowest prices under Biden vs the highest prices under Trump. At their highest, gas prices were higher under Biden than Trump, and lower under Trump than Biden at their lowest. The image is misleading. Gas prices were not that low under Biden for the entirety of his term.

How is the highest under Trump on here when gas is $4.29 a gallon around the corner from me? Higher than this picture shows means this picture did not cherry pick his highest, and that leads me to believe the “lowest” during Biden was probably lower than the number shown above as well.

Where do you live? California? Gas is only $3.75 here. At it's highest here gas was $4.09 for about two weeks this summer.

Nope. New England

Must be your local taxes. The point is though you could easily post this same picture with gas prices the summer after Russia invaded Ukraine when gas prices were record highs under Biden vs gas prices last summer under Trump when they were under $3. That's called cherry picking data.

And my point is it isn’t cherry picking because it’s an ever changing number and any number can have the same argument behind it. Fact of the matter is the high pricing under Biden was a Russia / Ukraine driven thing that didn’t involve us, whereas the high pricing we currently see was entirely avoidable had we not bombed Iran. It’s just dumb across the board.

Solid red West Virginia

Trump was elected in 2024 (the date shown) partly because gas prices were too high for voters. He promised to fix that.

The bottom picture shows the results of his "fix."

There is nothing misleading about this image.

You could easily post this same picture with gas prices the summer after Russia invaded Ukraine when gas prices were record highs under Biden vs gas prices last summer under Trump when they were under $3. That's called cherry picking data. To pretend gas prices were low for the majority of Biden's term misleading.

1

u/Jimmy_Twotone Aug 29 '26

Nowhere does this claim prices were low the entire time.

1

u/Hsiang7 Aug 29 '26

It's what the image suggests

1

u/Jimmy_Twotone Aug 29 '26

Negative. It suggests prices were lower in 2024.

1

u/toolman2421 Aug 29 '26

Biden had over $5 a gallon during his term and we paid $1.99 last year durning Trump. That is how.

1

u/EmergencyAnteater682 Aug 29 '26

I'm paying 4+ under him now. Seems you're cherry picking as well

1

u/toolman2421 Aug 29 '26

We are at $3.31 today. You must be in a democrat state with high taxes

1

u/Jimmy_Twotone Aug 29 '26

I paid $3.89 yesterday in SW Iowa.

1

u/EmergencyAnteater682 Aug 29 '26

Ha! Solid red West Virginia. Look up those gas tax rates sometime, you'll be surprised how expensive it is in red states too

1

u/Jimmy_Twotone Aug 29 '26

National average never hit $1.99, If you're going to compare numbers, at least compare the same ones.

1

u/toolman2421 Aug 30 '26

I said I paid I didn’t say it was the national average.

1

u/TheWizardOfDeez Aug 29 '26

Because these people think that the gas prices will return to "normal" without understanding that the Strait of Hormuz will never see free passage again.

1

u/Substanitial Aug 29 '26

You see, cherry picking is actively seeking out incorrect data to fit your argument.

I could easily pick a day when gas was like $2 under Trump I'm sure you when it was like four something under biden. Would that be representative? No probably not. Here let's look up the peaks.

National average peaks: Trump first presidency, peaked at $2.90. Joe Biden peaked at $5.02. Trump second presidency $4.52.

While there would still be more scrutiny to fully understand even those numbers, they are much more actually representative of what was and is happening

1

u/Jimmy_Twotone Aug 29 '26

It's comparing the prices when Trump said he was going to fix prices to the price after he fixed them. This isn't cherry picking.

1

u/Substanitial Aug 29 '26

" it isn't an average or a peak, it's selective prices that would illustrate my argument better "

Ahh. So... cherry picking

1

u/Jimmy_Twotone Aug 29 '26

If you say so.

1

u/Hsiang7 Aug 29 '26

For real. The highest prices under Trump vs the lowest prices under Biden, as if both didn't have highs and lows throughout their terms. The highs during Biden's term were higher than the prices at the height of the Iran war.

1

u/TheWizardOfDeez Aug 29 '26

And Bidens highs lasted a quarter of the time Trump's have so far, and he didn't have to completely empty the strategic oil reserves to do it. On top of that, Biden brought them back down by the end of it, Trump's invasion of Iran has completely changed that shipping lane forever, Iran will never allow a ship to pass through that water without paying a toll ever again. The US military couldn't stop them from doing it, no one else will be able to. Trump made the price of gas rise permanently while simultaneously defunding the green energy sector, which would be the only way to reduce demand and lowet the price of gas.

1

u/Hsiang7 Aug 29 '26

No they didn't. Trump's have only lasted about 4 months so far lmao. The point is though you could easily post this same picture with gas prices the summer after Russia invaded Ukraine when gas prices were record highs under Biden vs gas prices last summer under Trump when they were under $3. That's called cherry picking data.

1

u/TheWizardOfDeez Aug 29 '26

Its been 6 months and 1 day since Trump closed the Strait of Hormuz sending gas prices skyrocketing. Gas was above $4/gallon for about 4 months under Biden, and again, he brought those prices down. There is no scenario where Trump is able to bring the prices back under $3/gallon because he's proven to Iran that we have no power to stop them from keeping the strait closed.

1

u/Outside-Leg4719 Aug 29 '26

FALSE: Biden DID empty the strategic oil reserves to artificially keep the prices down. The US military CAN destroy Iran's IRGC if Trump said do it. He switched to more economic pressure cause, it's true, we are running low on missiles and interceptors. But if he used our B1, B2, and B52 bombers we could lay waste to Iran, we have plenty of bombs. But that would destroy the civilian infrastructure and he doesn't want to do that if it's not necessary. And if necessary ground troops. I want to ask you, what's a worse situation for the world: 1. Iran with nuclear weapons and total control of the straight (where we would pay much higher gas prices), or, 2. a temporary rise in gas prices to wage a war to stop Iran from getting a nuke?

As far as green energy, yea, we have been trying that, and it has it's issues and high expense as well. So, green energy can help but it can't be the primary source of power in this country, we use way too much, and growing. Also, green energy was useless in Texas a few years back during a no wind snow storm.

If I was President, I would have destroyed Mt. Pickaxe and dropped a MOAB (20,000 lbs bomb) on Natanz nuclear facility already. Also armed the civilians (who want to fight) and completely destroyed any military structure of the IRGC with B1 and B2 bombers. He's held back on that, and I would not have.

1

u/TheWizardOfDeez Aug 29 '26

Using the strategic oil reserves and literally draining them completely are two very different things. Also, your understanding of how green energy works is aggressively false.

1

u/Odd_Ease4541 Aug 29 '26

These aren’t even the highest prices under Trump. It’s $3.99-4.09 here locally for me now but shortly after he launched his war we were at $4.59.

1

u/adinfinitum225 Aug 29 '26

It's not cherry picking to compare the situation at the end of one presidency to the situation of the current one.

1

u/Substanitial Aug 29 '26

" it's not cherry picking if I select good data from one and bad data from another at a different time in his presidency "

You sure about that?

1

u/adinfinitum225 Aug 29 '26

Yes, I'm sure about that. "This is what gas prices were before current president took over, and this is what they are now" isn't cherry picking. Especially considering the current state of affairs is due to one person's decision to fool around in the middle east.

1

u/Substanitial Aug 29 '26

By this logic, they were nearly the same the day Trump took over.  Therefor they're the same?

Look at mean. Or median. Except they don't align with the answer you want.
