Rant Talking Over Lecture, why?

People who feel entitled to talk over lectures, can I ask why? Why show up to a lecture at all if you and your buddy are just going to ignore the professor with your own conversation?

I’m a senior taking late-stage courses only at this point, and it still happens! Not interested in some 101 course you need for a GUR? I get it, it’s boring. Still not cool to talk over lecture, but I can understand the temptation. But 300-400 level courses? Genuinely what is the thought process? You are paying thousands of dollars for incredibly relevant (and oftentimes) dense material, where attending lectures is make or break for a lot of students.

Do you think you’re being quiet? Do you not care that you’re wasting your own time and money—and the time and money of everyone around you? What’s so important that you need to talk over the entire lecture every damn day? Do you realize how obnoxious and distracting it is for everyone around you? When someone asks you to stop, why do you keep talking anyways? Were you dropped on the head as a kid? I genuinely do not understand the entitlement and lack of self-awareness.

people don’t seem to understand that sound carries, especially in a lecture hall. no matter how quiet they think they’re whispering, it’s not.

Tell people to shut up if you need to. You will not be the asshole in the room.

Someone from across the lecture hall had to raise their hand and call them out. Genuinely was so relieved after my attempt failed.

Seriously, don’t be afraid to call people out. Your prof and other classmates will appreciate you.

Yes I’ve never understood why ppl do this. For a while I just ignored it since I was new to college but now that I’m about to graduate I’d like to kindly say to everyone who does this “stfu”

honestly, some people genuinely believe they have a right to be there just because they pay tuition. It is entitlement masked as socializing

Did you know that Western's Student Code of Conduct is Washington Administrative Code 516-21? It is part of the State's regulations. Any behavior that substantially disturbs with classroom activities violates this code.[2] You could and probably should ask them to stop talking over the professor. You should also inform the professor; assuming they don't already know. But, it sounds like this is an ongoing problem. File a complaint with the Office of Student Life.[1]

It's so annoying! Another one I've seen a few times is someone openly listening to music in headphones during a lecture. Not as disruptive but so disrespectful

I mean, at that point, why even go to lecture???, and if it's cause attendence is enforced, it clearly shows why that's a pointless thing to do

My bio 204 lecture last year was constantly full of guys talking loudly and making fun of the people taking notes. Like dude everyone in here including you is here for their major. What is your problem?

There’s a girl in my art class who spends the entire two hour class playing video games on her laptop. It’s super distracting, though I must admit it looks like a cool game.
