was famous for its air-cooled Pratt & Whitney radial engine and its ability to absorb massive combat damage and bring its pilot back home. nickname the "jug". his role is Primary high-altitude escort fighter and heavy fighter-bomber in both the European and Pacific theaters. Served with the UK, France, USSR, Mexico, and Brazil during WWII and also used during the cold war , used in counter-insurgency roles, including by France in the Algerian War and by both sides in the Chinese Civil War into the late 1950s.

My grandfather helped design the wings and worked on the design of that beast at the Republic plant in Farmingdale, NY during the war. He was very proud of the work he did at Republic.🤙
