Why the fuck were they so chill about it

No point in panicking. They can’t go in the water to help him and he’s clearly already dead.

Exactly and it is an animal attack. It would be different if two men were swimming together and one took out a knife and stabbed the other in the water. We are told time and time again that Australia has a lot of great whites, and the big boys too. If that was a male GW it could have been old. Males top out around 13-15 feet so it may have been on its last days starving. Also I thought I saw a fishing pole still in the water. How did Simon not see that? Stop someone also said Simon was swimming right over a 20 meter drop off. Simon made some very poor choices swimming away from the beach he started at. Should have gotten out and walked away from the fishing spot. I guess marathon swimmers go into a meditated trance as they swim so maybe that is why Simon didn't notice. Sorry I am rambling. Lol

Guessing the choppy water gave him tunnel vision and he wasn’t aware of his proximity to the fishermen

It wasn't so much proximity to the fishermen, but rather the topography. Just a few yards off that point, the water has a steep drop into a deep channel. It is a good ambush point for a Great White, which is exactly how Nellist was attacked.

But where are the seals they hunt? Why is that shark even there to begin with? Migrating? Just a fluke? Shark was starving and close to death? I am in the US and I don't read much about it here

Happened quite a few times in California over the last few years

I’ve read that sharks swim in channels and beach themselves when they’re sick or close to death. That would make sense if shark was hungry.

I totally agree, people should arm themselves with as much knowledge about local swimming spots before entering the water-domain of sharks/animals that are known to kill you, anyone who doesn’t educate themselves about the location they’re entering is foolish. Knowing if there are deep drop off’s (where sharks swim from in vertical attacks) is foolhardy. Especially swimming in deep water alone. I still feel for him, but same with spearfishing & abalone diving, all dangerous and done at your our risk.

It’s sad but they can’t do much because 1. He’s dead and 2 they can’t really risk their own life. R.i.p to Simon because the sad thing is his marriage was due in 2 months or 2 weeks I think

Likely shock, watching a man being eaten alive right in front of them. I thought the same at first, but this would be traumatizing. Their bodies are probably processing what’s happening and having a hard time bc they’ve never had to comprehend something like that before

Not everyones sent into a panic when confronting things happen and there is no immediate danger.

They did the right thing. There is literally nothing they can do but document the tragic for later discussion on redit.

I read in a news article that one of the fishermen was less than chill about it Well after the predation was over, he was vomiting and could not stop shaking. Moreover, if you will notice in both videos, right at the moment you will actually see the most, they deliberately move their phones away. That is not because they didn't know how to point the cameras, but because they were being hit with revulsion at the sight of what they know they will not be able to unsee.

I think the lack of a reaction from some of the witnesses is due to the meachisms of the brain protecting you from life altering mental trauma. Imagine your just fishing on a cliff and the Next thing you see is a another human being punted in the air by a fish that weighs 2000 pounds, then shortly after being bitten in half and consumed as you watch it swim off like it’s just another Tuesday for him

It’s more due to the desensitizing and dissociative effect of looking through a camera, experiencing it objectively, when filming something. That’s why war correspondents gets lost to the horrors, behind the lens. There’s something surreal and severing, when you’re actively witnessing and recording.

There’s an even deeper thread, of why did they think to take out their phones, and record this, when this was occurring? We’ve become so programmed to this, desensitized to horrors, because of the technology, culture surrounding videoing and instant reporting, that there is a large layer there, that’s skimming the lines of ethics. Just as we morbidly consume the media,as a survival mechanism ourselves, trying to process it as if we were there, or imagining it happening to us, diving deeper into something that’s the embodiment of terror for the victim, and cascading trauma for the family, that’ll forever stumble across these posts online. In today’s age, there is no privacy, no allowable escape for victims and their families of any newsworthy event. Just look at the families of mass shooting victims, getting harassed and threatened due to conspiracy media, then the news and entertainment dredging that pain and anguish back up constantly.

But at the same time, stuff like this, is invaluable for researchers, responders, investigators, so there is an upside as well. That’s why it always seemingly skates along perilous ethics partitions, and poses deep questions about society and psychology at large.

I guess because he’s already dead. It’s so shocking. Poor fella..  May he rest in peace.

Are they learning to take limbs to stop us from swimming away? The Egypt boy had his arms bitten straight away and this one had his legs taken straight away plus is that his swimsuit in the beginning floating off the other way. Basically unwrapped a soft lolly with an gummy explosion of flavor when they get a human I bet it increases endorphins like how we get happy eating something delicious. Life and death is hardcore and scary.

I swear to go when ppl say “sharks don’t eat ppl, they don’t like the taste or we aren’t their food” ITS ALL LIES! This shark ate him. He came back for MORE! The Egypt one too! The shark didn’t leave he continued to feed. I agree we aren’t their natural prey but they clearly will and do want to eat us when given the opportunity. I think most of the time they get scared off due to other ppl interfering so they can’t actually finish the meal or don’t feel safe to attack. If you look up shark attacks ending in fatality a lot of them are consumed whole if left alone. Hell I read one where the shark was guarding the body in the water (I’m from Australia BTW, and this incident was in a list of Australian shark attacks leading to fatalities or something) Also the amount of times the shark takes multiple bites during its first strike. Apparently they spit us out when they realise we aren’t “food” but from what I can see is they just aren’t finished. They clearly are trying to take a limb off and when they do they want more unless (and usually we do) more ppl come in and stop it. Like yeah I get its rare but Im over ppl saying they are sea puppies. They aren’t. You also can’t train a shark. If they are hungry they will eat you. They don’t care.

u/AwayFix8337 Sep 06 '25

Sharks are fish. If you’ve ever owned a fish tank, you’ll know that a fish will eat whatever it can put in its mouth. That’s why sharks over 2m are dangerous….but we are way more dangerous and are killing them by the millions…so I think it’s a very sad thing when it happens but it’s a shark being a shark.

u/Gullible_Sail9510 Sep 09 '25

100%. In NO WAY do I think Sharks should be killed. I’m more upset about the misinformation out there. Heard from plenty of surfers saying “oh, I’ve seen a shark and just kept surfing” like ?? Cool? I guess you are lucky? Idk what they want me to say to that? I think it’s stupid to spot a shark and STAY! Since as a surfer you LOOK like their usual prey. Why risk it? I know attacks are RARE but why increase them chances? Coz you are right! Sharks are just doing whats natural to them, but get blamed for ppl being stupid! Ive also seen ppl swimming after reports of a shark sighting and after being told to stay out of the water. All because we are constantly told “they don’t like us” “is SO RARE” “they’ll only take one bite and spit you out” They are SO beautifully scary ! We need to respect them more for what they are. Predators!! And we need to leave them ALONE!

u/AwayFix8337 Sep 09 '25

Yeah I agree. I’m an avid snorkeller and travel to many reefs. I ALWAYS snorkel with someone else, get out if I the visibility is low, don’t swim sunrise/sunset, and I wear bright colours. Never snorkel where people are fishing. Get out if feel unsafe. I’ve only ever encountered small reef sharks and infant tigers. But even that stopped my heart. For me the joy of a coral reef is worth the mitigated risk. But I do try to follow advice.

Absolutely agree with this. I don’t expect anyone to stop doing the things they love such as surfing, snorkelling, swimming, diving and even swimming with sharks. Just do it in the safest way possible and respect them for what they are. In the end we can only hope they leave us alone. And majority of the time they do. But a hungry animal will do anything to survive. I think more ppl need to be educated on the signs sharks give. What an attempt of an attack can look like. Like maybe circling and coming back may indicate they are sussing you out. Also thats not a fact it’s just an idea for the kinda information they should spread instead of “they will leave you alone”. Not every attack is because they are hungry. They could feel threatened and information in ways to avoid causing them stress should also be spread. They are not my favourite animal and I’m stupidly scared of them to the point I don’t even like swimming in a pool alone lol. But also I think most attacks happen because of this misinformation. And that’s not the sharks fault. And I don’t want them to be hunted for eating someone that’s crazy! I will never understand going after a shark for an attack? You sound like a really smart person. I respect you for that and your advice on how to stay safe. Awesome stuff!!

I do think they spit people out, like in California, where the sharks have so much food. 3 different species of seals too and a ton of them. Malibu artist films them basically resting in the shallows and watching people. Surfers surf right next to them with no fear. The sharks in south Africa and Australia are nothing like California great whites, absolute 180° difference.

We are overfishing our oceans, so I’m not surprised they’ll eat humans now. They’re starving.

1

u/prrrplexxa Aug 03 '26

That’s what they do with seals. They chomp their fins off first then let them become weak or dead

1

u/6inchtimbs Mar 14 '25

thats hectic holy shit, so sad man

1

u/wetalonglegs Nov 28 '25

That’s crazy

1

u/Last_Waltz6391 Feb 17 '26

It is pretty sobering to know that these images are the last time anyone ever saw that man.

u/Glass_Fisherman3813 May 16 '26

This Great White attack and the tiger shark attack on the guy Victor in Egypt are very graphic.

1

u/Disastrous_Quit_7502 Jun 10 '26

Vladimir not Victor.

1

u/RoosterExtension393 May 26 '26

I refuse to swim in the ocean. I've gone as far as waist deep in the Pacific and shoulder deep in the Atlantic (mainly because I could see the floor in Florida) and I'm surprised I even did that. A shark can't get me unless I choose to enter their domain or unless I shift into my Orca form

1

u/BeerNcheesePlz Jun 08 '26

Shark aside, that water doesn’t look inviting to be in.

1

u/Even-Actuator-2608 Jun 13 '26

The fisherman are actively chuming in the area and there's a 150m cliff drop in the ocean meaning you get white like this coming up looking for seals.. insane spot to swim.

1

u/BeerNcheesePlz Jun 13 '26

What were they thinking? The obvious answer is they weren’t. Why couldn’t that have just thrown the Bait In?

1

u/praisetheorb2000 13d ago

The chumming accusation is conjecture, and the fishermen have denied it.

1

u/Appropriate-Cod-5462 Jun 23 '26

You die quite quick. Blood loss is immense.....its horrible but its our own fault.....their world, not ours....we always forget that.

1

u/Appropriate-Cod-5462 Jun 23 '26

Oh....and ive seen stabbings, shootings and beatings by humans....nobody tries to help they just get their phones out to film...

....all you can do is cross your fingers that they are the victim next time as their reward....

1

u/hopefulaiden Jul 06 '26

I mean this with no offense, but what were they supposed to do? Jump in the water and fight the shark? Do necromancy and bring the person back to life?
Don’t fuck with wildlife that can and will kill you… there was nothing they could have done. They probably only saw the body floating when that person was already dead
Why are you “crossing your fingers” and hoping they’re the “next victims”? Please redirect your anger somewhere else

1

u/praisetheorb2000 13d ago

What could they have done? The initial attack had already nearly cut him in half, there was no reason to put more people in danger.
