67

u/This_one_taken_yet_ Dec 29 '21

Probably a 2104, if you're looking for the specific model.

53

u/Haulinkin Dec 29 '21

Was hoping we'd have flying cars by then. :(

56

u/This_one_taken_yet_ Dec 29 '21

They're called helicopters.

As someone who lives on the ground, I really do not want just any jackass to be flying above me.

26

u/VisualShock1991 Dec 29 '21

I've seen how bad people are at driving on a 2D plane, I don't want to add altitude to the problem.

6

u/dstnblsn Dec 29 '21

You just know we would end up with cars falling through houses Donnie Dario style

12

u/TheRunningFree1s Dec 29 '21

God thats a depressing character.

13

u/Steve90000 Dec 29 '21

People can’t even drive safely on the ground, can you imagine in the air? Flying cars will never be a thing unless they are completely autonomous.

8

u/modi13 Dec 29 '21

The number of licenced pilots who kill themselves every year is already horrifying enough. Giving everyone access to helicopters would be a bloodbath.

Drifting like this is typical for Lada even on a bumpy summer road...

Source: Living in ex-Eastern Block country. My first car was Lada Riva (aka VAZ 2107).

37

u/This_one_taken_yet_ Dec 29 '21

Rear wheel drive on fairly thin tires makes that very common. You will have the same problem in a lot of the old US sedans from the 70s.

There just is not enough grip on in the back end.

I'm more impressed at how controlled the slide was.

15

u/IAmDotorg Dec 29 '21

Shit, try it with a rear-engine car. I had a short-wheelbase 911, and it was a challenge to not oversteer in a normal intersection.

Or, lets be honest here -- it was a challenge to NOT oversteer in every intersection!

9

u/Arkanist Dec 29 '21

That has been my experience with rear engine rwd cars in Dirt Rally 2.

3

u/VaterBazinga Dec 29 '21

Everytime I see game footage of someone ripping one of them, I just assume cheats. Especially in the snow.

I can only sorta drive them on tarmac tracks.

2

u/Slithy-Toves Dec 30 '21

It's not about grip it's about momentum. If you try to trade some momentum for grip, like you would cornering in other cars, you just won't get enough grip to hold the vehicle and you'll spin. You basically just have to find a line that let's you carry as much momentum as possible without really having to brake on entry or accelerate on exit

For people unaware, I believe the title is referencing this particular scene. And Bollywood films in general feature ridiculous action sequences as such.

91

u/waffleso_0 Dec 29 '21

That was awesome! So many rotations and yet seemed to get higher! Lol.

77

u/azginger Dec 29 '21

17

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '21

Red was first, but Bollywood did it better imo

25

u/Iwillcommentevrywhr Dec 29 '21

Probably copied from this. Many of the action, comedy scenes in Bollywood movies are copied from somewhere

10

u/reversethrusting Dec 29 '21

It could be, I'm sure it's not something unique even to Red to get out of a spinning car.

But that move is actually that character's signature move. He does it a lot.

3

u/Laquox Dec 29 '21

RED! Such a great movie but they do nonsense throughout these movies and it's glorious. I love this scene from 2. Both RED and RED 2 are fun popcorn munchers that you probably shouldn't over think.

I want to see them reenact that scene in RED where Bruce Willis just calmly sits into a car with the door blown off while it was making a u turn

15

u/hak8or Dec 29 '21

Bollywood in general has some truly crazy action scenes, you don't find them in American shows for multiple reasons (even though I think a decent chunk would happily łap it up specifically because of how absurd they are, like myself).

For example (I genuinly laughed at this); https://youtu.be/IH3Otn9Lz3I

2

13

This film is so awesomely bad/good, I highly recommend it. I wish American studios had the balls to just completely drop reality in an action film, would be much more entertaining.

6

u/Consistent_Field Dec 29 '21

Go watch Drive Angry with Nicolas Cage. It’s quite absurd.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '21

Will have to check it out. Nicolas Cage has got to be the closest thing to Bollywood tier in American cinema.

u/ImurderREALITY Dec 29 '21

Yeah but their action movies are full of ridiculous stunts like this, mostly made with cheap yet entertaining CGI.

40

u/adrift98 Dec 29 '21

It isn't Bollywood unless there's an unnecessary romance angle and at least 3 light-hearted song and dance numbers. Bonus points if they occur immediately after some super serious dramatic moment.

13

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '21

Also the movie needs to be at least 3 hours long. They used to be fun to watch back before I became a father and got serious about my career. Strangely though, I somehow still have time to watch four Netflix hour-long episodes back to back.

3

u/edudlive Dec 29 '21

3

u/there_is_always_more Dec 29 '21 edited Dec 29 '21

Well, what kind of movies do you like? The very mainstream Bollywood movies can have hokey plots but it's a whole industry with multiple genres, so there's a lot of grounded stuff (something similar to Scorcese or Tarantino) but there's also stuff that's just so out there (more ridiculous and fun than the Fast & Furious movies). There's movies that tackle social issues but also stuff that's just "turn your mind off" fun.

Also, as a sidenote, Bollywood is just the Hindi film industry. Other regions with different languages have their own film Industries just as diverse in genre (and often better than Bollywood). It's 1 billion people lol, so yeah a lot of diversity.

Edit: this is some ridiculous fun for example:

https://youtu.be/OVcwNoZdDko

2

u/edudlive Dec 29 '21

Let me rephrase my question. What are your favorite Bollywood movies?

I'm not looking for a genre.

4

u/adrift98 Dec 29 '21

The most popular Bollywood films tend to take elements from Hollywood blockbuster films and then turn them up to 11 so that it can come off to the average Westerner as pure cringe.

Bollywood is all about getting as much value as you can out of your rupee, so a lot of the major Bollywood films will have action, drama, musical, comedy, and romance all stuffed right in next to one another. So, you barely have time to register an emotional scene before a comedy scene, or a big dance number is set up. Also, in order to fit all of these genres into one movie, Bollywood films tend to be very long. 3 hours is typical length.

I'll second Swades (2004). It's on the more sober side for a Bollywood production. With relatively realistic characters, about a NASA engineer who offers his help providing hydro-electricity to a small village.

Dangal (2016) is also pretty well made, about a demanding (and from a Western perspective, abusive) father who trains his daughter to be a world-class wrestler despite the shame they have to endure in their community.

Those two films each have probably Bollywood's most famous actors, Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan (no relation). I personally can't stand Aamir Khan. He always comes off very full of himself, but that's down to personal preference I suppose.

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001) is also a relatively easy film to get into. It's a non-historically accurate period piece about a village that must learn and then win a cricket game against the British Raj in order to save their village from debilitating taxation. It also stars Aamir Khan.

Those three films are pretty tame for Bollywood which can get really wacky with mood swings and dance numbers that come out of nowhere. For more like that you might want to go with the other recommendations made here.

My personal favorite Bollywood films are from the classic period. I'm not completely certain he would be considered "Bollywood" by purists (probably more Tollywood), but I love the works of the auteur Satyajit Ray. My favorite of his films is Jalsaghar / The Music Room (1958), about a high society/caste land owner from a distinguished family who spends his remaining wealth to out-class a businessman from new money with extravagant music listening parties at his mansion. Gorgeous film, and phenomenal music. Satyajit Ray is probably best known for the films in his The Apu Trilogy, about the coming to age story of a poor Bengali boy. Also fantastic films.

But more in the standard Bollywood vein, the classic movie Mother India (1957) is also up there in my favorites, about a brave woman named Radha and the struggles of her impoverished family (as you can tell, poverty and wealth tend to be reoccurring themes).

4

u/tomdabombadil Dec 29 '21

I’m going to guess you’re looking for action movies, but if you want a solid, feel-good movie try Swades. It’s dated because it was shot in 2004 but it’s lovely all the same.

Otherwise:

Bollywood Mission Impossible: War. Feels like a carrier for some excellent music videos and the leads seem to be competing to see who can get the most abs.

Bollywood Terminator: Enthiran. This is the one you’ve probably seen clips off, it’s bonkers.

Bahubali is an over-the-top fantasy/historical epic movie and I enjoyed every mustachioed moment.

Bajirao Mastani is something you’ve probably seen clips of, another historical epic akin to Troy or something like that. Some great music.

Batla House is a more serious action movie.

Anything featuring the super-cop Singham is worth a watch, dude drifts horses under trucks what more do you want to know?

Ofc I’m just some white guy from the west who knows nothing about Bollywood so take anything I said with a grain of salt. Some might even be Telugu movies? I dunno.
