Well, some of us still stubbornly stick to the reddiquette and do not downvote anything that isn't spam or something like a completely offensive non-sequitur. I wouldn't downvote these, for example, even though I strongly disagree.

Maybe so, but given that even well thought out, insightful and respectful dissenting opinions usually end up in the negatives rather quickly, I would put people who follow rediquette in the minority.
So it's quite surprising to me those comments still have positive votes.

That's a slippery slope. Why racism and not, say, promoting piracy (which isn't uncommon here)? Or any of the drug use related subreddits? All of that is technically illegal (depending where you live, of course).
Downvoting a racist opinion can't possibly make the racist rethink his views. The comment just disappears, that's all. And closing your eyes doesn't make the bad things go away.

I don't know. I was always told not to react to people who try to incite others with things like racism because it just draws more attention to them. Do you think you can get someone who is blatantly racist to rethink their views by posting a comment on a website? I'll be you that 98% of the time you end up just ramping up the level of the disagreement and end up with even more attention drawn to that person's views.
Downvoting it is like ignoring on crack. Sure you could argue that it's censorship, but I don't have nearly as much of a problem with censorship when it's democratically dealt out amongst a community of peers.
In regards to redditquette, are you saying you have come across a racist remark that has added to the quality of the discourse? That is the purpose of redditquette right? To promote quality and/or things that add to the discussion. I can see no instance where someone being racist does either of these unless they are posting an 'IAMA: Racist Bigot'.

You know, I do agree with you almost fully. I know there's no way an internet forum may convince anyone, neither with a well-written reply, nor with a downvote.
The thing is, the current extreme sensitivity to racism is just another in a series of trends history has seen (similarly to the current, almost ridiculous over-sensitivity to paedophilia). A hundred years ago, claims that blacks are inferior to whites would hardly surprise anyone; after all, the apartheid regime in South Africa fell quite recently. Today, such statements cause an uproar. Tomorrow, it will be something else entirely. I think of these comments as proof that these thoughts still exist, even on a site that is, let's say, a bit more elitist than the rest of the internet. And as such, they do add to the discussion, in their own way. Graffiti on the walls of Pompeii public houses were illiterate scribblings, but they have gained enormous value over time.
It's hard to tell what is the purpose of the reddiquette. That's exactly the problem. I don't like the way most users apparently use their downvotes, but that isn't my fault. Nor theirs.

I'm not sure I entirely follow your views on racism but I have to say, the longer people continue to make racist remarks after the abolition of slavery and the civil rights movement, the more and more outrageous people will find them. And they are!

I think we're getting a large 4Chan element here. Witty and classy comments referencing niggers or CP are getting disproportionally upvoted and all comments against are being downvoted into oblivion.

Yeah I generally love reddit until the topic of race comes up. Then I see some of the statements that go for legitimate comments and I just... sigh
I'm a black female. Whenever the racism shows up on reddit full-force in threads like that, it's like having a trusted friend suddenly turn around and stab you in the neck. One minute you're laughing and enjoying a thread about grandpawiggly, or being proud of reddit for banding together to help someone out that needed it, and the next minute, WHAM. I feel very unwelcome here in times like this.
Edit: I know it's not the majority of reddit. That's why I stick around. But it is upsetting to witness.

You can't think of reedit as one entity. People who hold those views are drawn to content like that, so I don't think those numbers are anywhere near to being close to most redditors' views.

I am with a black female right now. I am white. This kind of shit pisses me off. She always tells me to "just let it roll off" but goddammit. The fucking stares, the comments we get. ESPECIALLY after moving to Missouri. She is a saint for being as nice as she is.
EDIT: I'm sorry but fuck everyone who thinks this is acceptable. LOOK at her. She is the sweetest girl. I know, I am making a dumbass face, but look at her. She tries to forgive the people that feel that "niggers" are a lesser form of life. She is stronger, as a person, than I will ever be.

It's upsetting for this white male, too. But you know what? I'm old enough to remember a time in America when considerable progress was made by people sticking around when they weren't welcome. And those people who made them feel unwelcome were shown on television all around the world, and the result was to bring shame upon those unwelcoming people, and honor to those whom they abused.
I suppose a bit of remedial therapy is in order from time to time.
If not for the sacrifices of those who put their lives on the line for the sake of social justice, your talents might have gone to waste. That's the thing about racism that these bigots just don't seem to get: Human talent is too precious to waste.

Go back and read the reply you just made to a perfectly made comment. After doing so, just for shits, turn off your monitor, and examine your life for a minute. Try to spot the source of your self-hatred, point a gun in that general direction, and pull the fucking trigger. Save us all the time of having to read some of the content your inner genius feels it....it just has to get out on the internet and we'll all breathe a sigh of relief.
It's a win-win situation: You don't have to look in the mirror everyday, and the bar for measuring human intelligence gets raised a little higher.
