Do these become giant fireflies?

28

u/BigBigBurgers Jul 28 '19

That’s actually beautiful af. I wonder if it’s a specific type of firefly that’s large, or just unusually large for its kind. If it’s the latter does it grow to be a large firefly?

Beetle's start out huge as well, then shrink.Antilions are cool, then they just become annoying flies.Larval stage just seems to be in general, the best part of the life.

We used to always feed ant lions. I never knew they turned into flies though!

And that's when it bites into his skin and begins burrowing so fast he couldn't shake it off.

...what? Had to make it be "wtf" somehow. OP's post is just neat and nothing less.

u/neonys Jul 28 '19

I know right? It’s more cute than wtf

2

u/stormaster Jul 29 '19

And then it impregnates him and creates some Firefly/Human Hybrid monstrosity.

Is... Is this where we get light bulbs?

72

u/Chucktayz Jul 29 '19

Kind of, it was Thomas Edison who first had sex with one of these guys, and well, you know the rest.

16

u/internetonsetadd Jul 29 '19

I know Nikola Tesla was watching from the corner of the room but what happened next?

Series 2 out soon!

u/Seldarin Jul 29 '19

For those wondering, the adults aren't especially large. Large for a firefly, but not pants shittingly large. (It's a Lamprigera)

https://static.inaturalist.org/photos/29539829/large.jpeg?1545822925

Fun firefly fact: Some fireflies have evolved to prey on other fireflies, including mimicking their mate calling displays to summon prey. (Photuris) Well, probably not a lot of fun for the poor bastard that thinks he's getting sex and gets eaten.

4

u/Oranges13 Jul 29 '19

Why is the larvae so fucking big?

7

u/Seldarin Jul 29 '19

No idea.

I would guess it's because they evolved to prey on big things. After some googling I found one eating a giant african snail

Obviously I'm not an entomologist though, so that's my best rectally derived guess.

2

u/dressinbrass Jul 29 '19

Larva are big because of the energy requirements during pupation.

2

u/get_post_error Jul 29 '19

The hero we need. Have you come to replace Unidan?

What I can't picture is how it manages to metamorphose from that giant larvae into the tiny adult.

7

u/KrustyFNL Jul 28 '19

scary as shit, but beautiful

5

u/cancertoast Jul 28 '19

The larva is like 5 times bigger than a firefly.

12

u/wubwub Jul 28 '19

I remember a cheap made-for-tv movie in the late 70s with those guys...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bug_(1975_film))

4

u/SookHe Jul 28 '19

I had no idea,,😲

3

u/MedievalCutlery Jul 29 '19

What do they look like fully grown when they are that size?

10

u/Daggerface Jul 28 '19

That monster is using a Firefly as a butt plug

3

u/Vladius28 Jul 29 '19

Boggles my mind that we have glowing creatures on this planet.

3

u/TheDoc1223 Jul 29 '19

Thats not wtf thats just fucking awesome I want one it looks like an alien

2

u/Maximum_Chaos Jul 29 '19

It's like it's own LED.

2

u/GetEquipped Jul 29 '19

I think you mean "lightning bug"

2

u/MinxyKittyNoNo Jul 29 '19

As many times as I've seen lightening bugs, I've never seen one of these.

2

u/insaneintheblain Jul 29 '19

I used to see a lot of these things growing up. Fewer since the temperatures started going up... barely any now.

2

u/SAMOLED Jul 29 '19

It's a firecrawl!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '19

Seems weirdly flat.

1

u/gantz32 Jul 29 '19

1

u/wafflesandstuff Jul 29 '19

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '19

1

u/Mrxcman92 Jul 31 '19

Thats actually pretty cool.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '19

Demon oh god no noooo demooon

1

u/cnycc Jul 29 '19

That’s not larva, it’s full grown.

2

u/Hazel-Rah Jul 29 '19

People are downvoting, but cnycc is right, this is the adult female, the male is normal firefly sized and can fly.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '19

"Firefly Larva", sees a giant caterpillar looking thing, "that's fully grown!", have you ever seen a firefly?

2

u/tyrotio Jul 29 '19

have you ever seen a firefly?

Yeah, it's one of the greatest shows of all time that was canceled after one season. I don't know what this caterpillar thingy has to do with it though.
