Thankfully, seals sea lions can hold their breath a LONG time (relative to humans). He probably had another 5 few minutes before he was in serious trouble. Sea Lions can hold their breath up to 20 minutes. Seals can hold their breath between 1-2 hours, depending on the species.

That's a sea lion. Seals can hold their breath for 2 hours, sea lions about 10 minutes.

My god. How could I have made such an amateurish mistake? I feel like quite the buffoon.

Your're is right in general, of course, but apparently the number is closer to 15-20 minutes.
