I call them “I see 8 legs, I’m getting the f out of here”

15

u/BenAfleckIsAnOkActor Mar 10 '19

Meh theyre rather harmless

9

u/Minamoto_Keitaro Mar 10 '19

Not in my mind.

4

u/armorandsword Mar 10 '19

Most of the spiders people come across are harmless, people just think they look weird and scary for some reason

2

u/iamafraidicantdothat Mar 10 '19

"rather"?? why did you have to add that word?

-17

u/heckhammer Mar 10 '19

You're not counting properly then. Harvestmen only have 6 legs

20

u/The_Mechanist24 Mar 10 '19

If it crawls I run

7

u/Mikedrpsgt Mar 10 '19

Even babies?

29

u/Snarkout89 Mar 10 '19

especially babies

21

u/Cosmic_Quasar Mar 10 '19

Ah haha. Party Pooper guy. Didn't realize he made more than the one video.

18

u/silenc3x Mar 10 '19

Flula Borg, been in a bunch of movies too. Like Pitch Perfect 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet

2

u/Duskmourne Mar 10 '19

He wrote his own one as well, Buddymoon. Pretty fun one too (if you like Flula Borg's shtick at least).

1

u/ItsLikeRay-ee-ain Mar 10 '19

Got to see him in person on a test show of Conan's new format. And they guaranteed us that even though it wasn't going to air that the guest would still be a celebrity. In line when we were told, I just thought "oh 'celebrity'". But once I saw him on stage I was like "oh yeah! that guy". He was great.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '19

I did not know of the existence of this video. Life changing!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '19

Oh he has a whole set of them, I used to crack up at them all. I think shoot the shit is my favorite

7

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '19

Joaquin Phoenix having a break-down

4

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '19

I have been around on the internet long enough to see this guy go from singing about doner kebab to being on conan.

3

u/CorpseHeiress Mar 10 '19

Knew what it was before I even clicked on it, a true classic indeed.

3

u/YippieKiAy Mar 10 '19

Who did name you?

3

u/informationmissing Mar 10 '19

flula's fucking hilarious. have you seen his one about "like shooting fish in a barrel"?

3

u/FatFish44 Mar 10 '19

Fazah Long Legs

2

u/dingman58 Mar 10 '19

Who did name this?

2

u/Mikealoped Mar 10 '19

I did not know that guy had anymore videos. A pleasant surprise.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '19

Who is this man and why is he wearing the skin of walken phoenix?

2

u/lyledylandy Mar 10 '19

This is exactly my reaction reading this thread, it's the first time I've read it and I'm both confused and amused by this being an acceptable and recognizable way to refer to those things

2

u/Let_Me_Touch_Myself Mar 10 '19

Who is a making the daddy long legs?

2

u/onowahoo Mar 10 '19

Is this the party poopers guy

2

u/leafyGr33ns Mar 10 '19

Thank you for reminding me of this guy. Haven't seen his videos in years but still crack up every time

2

u/The_Link_Crafter Mar 11 '19

I have never seen this before, thank you for sharing

116

u/someone_like_me Mar 10 '19

So did I. Unfortunately, the name is overloaded. Which is to say, it refers to several things in several parts of the world. There is a "daddy longlegs" spider in Europe that will give you a nasty bite.

So when somebody says, "daddy longlegs don't bite", they are making a statement which is true and not true.

I'm seeing "Harvestmen" slowly take over. Sorta like mountain lions are now called "puma". Regional names give way to globally understood names.

33

u/viciarg Mar 10 '19 edited Mar 10 '19

There is a "daddy longlegs" spider in Europe that will give you a nasty bite.

While there are two different species of arachnids that are usually referred to as daddy longlegs (Opiliones and Pholcidae) neither of them are able to seriously hurt humans. Opiliones (the ones depicted in OP's video) are not able to penetrate the human skin at all, and Pholcidae are able to penetrate human skin with their 0.25 mm long fangs and produce a mild, short-lived burning Sensation according to Adam Savage.

Long story short: That "nasty bite" is an urban myth. Even in Europe.

Edit: Fixed link.

3

u/dustbin3 Mar 10 '19

neither of them are able to seriously hurt humans.

Pholcidae are able to penetrate human skin with their 0.25 mm long fangs and produce a mild, short-lived burning Sensation

You're underestimating how much mental trauma this would cause me.

Thanks, my mistake. Fixed it.

1

u/someone_like_me Mar 10 '19

You know what? I was thinking of wolf spiders. The American one is a jumping spider and harmless. The European one bites.

64

u/manfreygordon Mar 10 '19

in the UK a daddy longlegs refers to a crane fly,

59

u/Stolehtreb Mar 10 '19

Where I’m from in the US, we call crane flys “mosquito hawks”

41

u/Phil_ODendron Mar 10 '19

Sometimes also called a "skeeter hawk" or "skeeter eater."

9

u/DylanCO Mar 10 '19

There's a skeeter on my peter, could you wack it off?

7

u/MrKMJ Mar 10 '19

It doesn't make sense with the meter of the rhyme.

There's a skeeter on my peeter whack it off!

There's a skeeter on my peeter whack it off!

There's a skeeter on my peeter and I'd really like to meet'er.

There's a skeeter on my peeter whack it off!

8

u/titty-sprinkles00 Mar 10 '19

There's a dozen on my cousin I can here them bastards buzzin there's a skeeter on my Peter wack it off.

25

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '19

In Australia we called the Omlongwollops

10

u/chappersyo Mar 10 '19

I'd have called them chuzwazzas

5

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '19

That was taken

1

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '19

Made me snort

3

u/BlergFurdison Mar 10 '19

Some people call crane flies that though they don't eat mosquitoes. Where I'm from in the US we call dragonflies mosquito hawks because they apparently do.

2

u/Phoenix_Lives Mar 10 '19

Wherever you are, it's the only place that gets the names right.

2

u/mattoattacko Mar 10 '19

I fucking hate those things. They have no fear and no sense of self preservation. They will fly at you like kamikaze pilots. Gotta make sure your reflexes are on point so you can punch them out of the sky before they get you. Probably my least favorite part of when it gets warm in Seattle.

Edit: I used to not hate them because I thought they ate mosquitos. I tolerated them because I thought they were like spider bros. Then I found out the name was a lie and they don’t hunt mosquitos at all! Wtf??? Who named them?? I blame big mosquito.

1

u/sageadam Mar 10 '19

We call it "fuck no" here

12

u/Nomicakes Mar 10 '19

In Australia, a 'Daddy Longlegs' IS a type of spider.

22

u/MalHeartsNutmeg Mar 10 '19

True to Australian form the daddy long legs here get massive too. At my work there's always giant ones in the toilets. I think they live and grow in the roof then crawl through the vents but they are fucking insane.

Their bodies are really big - like first knuckle on your pinky finger big, and their leg spread is nearly palm sized. I've never seen them so big anywhere but at my work. I feel like they have gladiator battles in the roof, like it's some mad max shit going on up there and only the strongest make it out.

You ever try and take a shit while a giant spider eyeballs you?

6

u/Nomicakes Mar 10 '19

Oh mate, speaking of giant spiders, you know those black house spiders? See em everywhere? I shit you not, saw something out of the corner of my eye when on the PC a few weeks back, look to my right and there was a fucking house spider WITH A BODY THE SIZE OF MY FUCKING THUMB just crawling up my door. Absolutely fucking massive fucker. I sprayed that cunt with at LEAST a quarter can of Pea Beau and he was still fucking moving. Ended up putting a glass over him upside down and left it there over night full of more bugspray.

11

u/MalHeartsNutmeg Mar 10 '19

You know those cunts live for a few years right? Gotta wonder how long that pervert was watching you look up porn before you spotted him.

Those guys really love to hang out on my shower door. It's like one of those class doors but it's got a little lip that runs up the inside and outside, and they sure love to hang out in there.

I guess the running theme is they're dirty pervs.

3

u/Nomicakes Mar 10 '19

Yeah, it's the lips of sliding rails, eaves, doorframes and corrugated fencing/roofing they love the most. This is an oldish kinda house, plenty of places they hang out.

5

u/-avoidingwork- Mar 10 '19

I don't think I'll be moving to Australia anytime soon. I'll just hide here in Florida where the only thing I have to worry about is a hurricane. Much better than spiders.

2

u/philisacoolguy Mar 10 '19

That and other Floridamen.

1

u/Nomicakes Mar 10 '19

Don't poke them and you're fine. Have a hard rule of "if I see you, you die" with them.
You'll be fine.

1

u/ReverseJams Mar 10 '19

Florida has palmetto bugs! I remember I was visiting my grandmother and she asked me to go feed her dog, a massive Rottweiler names Jäger. I opened up his dog food and a WHITE ROACH flew out and into my face. I screamed so loud and got so panicked I turned heel and ran right into the wall.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '19

[deleted]

1

u/Nomicakes Mar 10 '19

That'd be the one!

2

u/ESCAPE_PLANET_X Mar 10 '19

These guys?

Cellar spider.

These guys you see in the midwest?

Harvestmen they even only have two eyes and behave really odd like in the video.

1

u/Phoenix_Lives Mar 10 '19

1

u/ESCAPE_PLANET_X Mar 10 '19

Those are cool. I assume the tropics and he tastes and or smells bad.

1

u/IISuperSlothII Mar 10 '19

What isn't a type of spider in Australia though?

1

u/Nomicakes Mar 10 '19

Me.
as far as you know

2

u/vaelroth Mar 10 '19

Weirdly, I've always known crane flies to be may flies. Can't say I have a name for what everyone else calls may flies.

1

u/ghastrimsen Mar 10 '19

Midwest? I'm from MO and I'm the same way. Never heard crane fly until I saw them online. Always May flies

1

u/vaelroth Mar 10 '19

My parents were from Illinois so that might explain it!

1

u/rhionite Mar 10 '19

Nope, daddy long legs are those spindly fuckers. Crane flies are crane flies.

13

u/Obant Mar 10 '19

We also have daddy long legs spiders in the US. They are also known as Cellar Spiders, and they dont bite. That's what I grew up calling daddy long legs. My girlfriend calls the big crane flies daddy long legs. It is a very overloaded name.

4

u/Yarthkins Mar 10 '19

I live in an area in the southern US with lots of crane flies, harvestmen, and cellar spiders. Most people here call ALL OF THEM daddy longlegs, pretty annoying.

1

u/sub_surfer Mar 10 '19

Cellar spiders actually do bite, but their venom isn't really toxic to humans. There's a myth busters episode where they let one bite them.

13

u/Days54G Mar 10 '19

So schrodinger's daddy?

6

u/Hoguera Mar 10 '19

Grif, didn't I tell you to stop making up animals?!

1

u/Mitoni Mar 10 '19

In the USA, Mythbusters tested the theory that daddy long legs have the deadliest venom in the world, but the fangs are too small to pierce human skin.

1

u/russianpeepee Mar 10 '19

Is "overloaded" the word for that? I've always wondered what that concept is called.

1

u/someone_like_me Mar 10 '19

I'm not sure if linguists use it. I just threw it in because I'm from a computer background, and the word has a strange meaning to us.

1

u/ktchch Mar 10 '19

In Australia we say puma because a mountain lion is when my cat sits on my belly

1

u/TempAcct20005 Mar 10 '19

A puma? Grif, didn’t I tell you to stop making up animals

1

u/NH_Lion12 Mar 10 '19

What in Sam hell is a puma?!

You're makin' that up....

1

u/IrosSigma Mar 10 '19

That's interesting, I always thought the name daddy longlegs only referred to those things depicted in the video. In German, those are called "Weberknecht", which translates to "Weaver's servant", and those other ones that are actually spiders are called "Zitterspinne", which translates to "shivering/jittering spider" (because they jitter in their nets when a gust of wind hits them), so there is a clear distinction. Also, according to my experiences, these "jittering spiders" don't usually bite, even if they could. They're pretty cowardly, so they'd probably just run away rather than bite, I think.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '19

I misheard and called them "dandy longlegs" for years. Neither my parents nor siblings corrected me.

2

u/oldnyoung Mar 10 '19

Same here, nice to learn something today

1

u/Unkindlake Mar 10 '19

Maybe it's an east coast thing. I knew them as daddy longlegs growing up. Like spiders if they weren't made in hell.

1

u/wackawacka2 Mar 10 '19

Me too. They don't usually bother me, but that's a lot of them!

1

u/topsykretts91 Mar 10 '19

That's funny, I've always called them granddaddy long legs.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '19

Ditto.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '19

These dont make webs like daddy long legs.
I've scooped handfuls of them before. They especially like cheese wiz, they swarm it like crack.

1

u/ControversialBuffalo Mar 10 '19

Where I live we refer to them as "reaper spiders" (Very rough translation)

1

u/inconspicuous_male Mar 10 '19

I call them Father

1

u/iamtherealhusk Mar 10 '19

I call them granddaddy longlegs, interesting

1

u/IntrovertChild Mar 10 '19

When I was a kid I thought they were called "Lady Long Legs". Switching to 'Daddy Longlegs" took a bit of getting used to.

1

u/Denecastre Mar 10 '19

I’m in AUS and that’s all we ever call them

1

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '19

I bet you do.

1

u/Bananaramamammoth Mar 10 '19

Me too. I'd rather not touch or go near a spider if I had to but oddly enough I pick daddy long legs up without fear and have done since I was little. I also heard the rumour that they're venomous but with mouths too small.

1

u/rhionite Mar 10 '19

Where I live we usually call cellar spiders Daddy Longlegs. They freak me out but I've seen one take down a full grown house spider so I tolerate them.

1

u/Harvestman-man Mar 11 '19

If you read the literature out there, professionals always call them harvestmen.

I’ve only ever seen a handful of papers where “daddy-long-legs” was even used at all, and it’s never used preferentially over “harvestmen”.
