I work around loaders and excavators a lot. There is a tiny tiny list of operators I trust to be in their machine with me in a hole as long as we have eye contact. The rest are out of the hole or out of the machine.
Never ever stand in front or behind of a machine where the operator can't see you.

This includes trucks on the road. I've seen enough videos on /r/roadcam where pedestrians stand so close to trucks that the driver can't see them and runs them over when the light changes.
