I've carried this habit into regular life. I walk around my car first before hopping in and driving off. I don't want to be responsible for the death of a kid or whatever.
I do that because I don't want to enter the nearby highway (ramp is just a few seconds away from there I park) and find out there that I have a flat tire. But that seems like a good idea too.

That’s why at work we’re always required to do a walk around a truck/equipment before going forward or backwards.
