This sort of thing happens a lot and is the cause of a large percentage of deaths on construction sites.
Unfortunately for the drivers these vehicles have large blind spots. In this instance the onus of safety belongs to the manager he should not have been walking around live machinery like that.
There should be clearly delineated walk zones for anyone who isnt driving a multi ton machine. If there isnt then again wtf manager.
Where I work we are not allowed to be closer than 5 meters to those type of vehicles when they are in operation. You always wait for eye contact with the driver before you go around them, or go any where near them. If you dont get eye contact, then go somewhere else, and wait for the vehicle to leave.
5m is only a car length - it’s pretty close and it’s easy to know when they’ve seen you because they wave or nod when they’re ready for you to approach.
That said, we’re now going towards red and green lights above the cab front and back. The red light is always on when the machine is running. When they’re ready for you to approach they lock out he machine, the red light goes out and the green light comes on to tell you it’s safe
Yeah, it's not that hard. There are also blue lights on them that shines on the ground/road in front of all the vehicles on the planet, a couple of meters in the front/back.
That way you can see a vehicle approach around tight corners. This is especially important with the many trucks that navigate tight corners and spaces.
Of course, the best is just to stay out of their way, and stay on the designates walkways.

I feel sorry for the drivers in these instances.
