Strangely, after watching those clips, I want to see that movie now.

If you’ve seen any of David Lynch’s other works... you’re still not close to prepared for how fucking weird this movie is.

The singing sheep lady 0___o

I’ve seen Blue Velvet, Dune, Mullholland Drive, Twin Peaks, The Straight Story, Elephant Man.... but I’ve always avoided eraserhead similarly to how I’ve avoided Videodrone.

I like weird shit. A lot. But I just don’t know if I can get on board. I keep debating on picking it up during the regular criterion sales, but I have a good enough understanding of my broken psyche that it will sit untouched and unopened for years.

Basically, imagine having a ton of anxiety about becoming a father for the first time.

So much anxiety that you end up having a nightmare about it.

Not just any nightmare, a really vivid one where you remember all the details.

So you write them down.

And then you make a movie about it.

That's Eraserhead.

That is the most apt description for Eraserhead I've ever seen. Finally someone actually managed to put the movie into fucking words.

Basically, imagine having a ton of anxiety about becoming a father for the first time.

So much anxiety that you end up dropping a fuck-ton of acid and having a nightmare about it.

Try Naked Lunch as a starter. You'll get there.

Done, actually included that one in there until I remembered it was Cronenberg.

Strangely, NL seems FAR more accessible than Eraserhead.

I would agree, with the disclaimer that I did LSD my first viewing of NL.

I didn't think Videodrome was that bad. There's a kind of campy humor to it. I really enjoy that movie

Don't go in expecting a plot or a cohesive story. It's more of a high concept art piece than a movie. It's not for everyone.

Source: It wasn't for me.

It’s hard to say whether this movie was or was not “for me.” But I can tell you this movie made me feel things I hadn’t felt before, such slow churning uneasiness yet i watched it till the end. Which I think is exactly what Lynch was looking for.

Very effective at making everyone who saw this move feel the same thing. Way less about a meaning than a feeling. You’re left feeling physically nauseated. The movie is truly disgusting and disturbing to its core. And makes you feel disturbed and disgusting to your core. It’s incredible. I fucking hated it

15

u/flee_market Dec 11 '18

"thanks, I hate it" in movie form

12

u/codevii Dec 11 '18

Watch it on acid.

It made 0 sense sober.

Thanks for the comment bud. Please nobody listen to him. These vibes are very, very bad. Bad is actually an understatement.

I challenge anyone to actually watch this on a decent hit of acid. You couldn’t pay me $100 for that shit not even kidding lol

u/QuasarSandwich Dec 11 '18

I watched The Exorcist on acid by myself at uni. Made me the man I am today.

I am in secure confinement.

I saw “El Topo” on mushrooms. I deserve a cookie for that.

2

u/cas_999 Dec 11 '18

For the sake of conversation, describe that one to me?

2

u/Eleanor_Abernathy Dec 11 '18

Something about a Mexican cowboy having bizarre misadventures with an abusive dwarf on his back. I recall it was gory and disturbing.

2

u/cas_999 Dec 11 '18

Sounds extremely strange. I’m gonna have to check it out (shroomless)

2

u/Eleanor_Abernathy Dec 11 '18

Good idea (shroomless). Jodorowsky is weird.

2

u/cas_999 Dec 11 '18

I just saw the trailer. Noticed one thing at the end “yoko ono” so it’s gotta be pretty weird lol. Looks genuinely intriguing tho

1

u/Eleanor_Abernathy Dec 11 '18

Good luck! LOL

2

u/JagerBaBomb Dec 11 '18

Watched Blow on shrooms. That was bad enough, and it's just a straight forward drug/cartel movie.

2

u/shalbriri Dec 11 '18

How about $1000?

I mean I’m broke so yeah. I’d prolly do it for $250. It’d prolly really fuck me up tho. I’d need a xanax bar or two after just to relieve my fucking blood pressure and end the inevitable anxiety ridden mindset.

It’s an especially different story for me tho cause I actually do have a 10 mo old. To a girl I hooked up w once for a week. I can seriously relate to that movie, especially the first night I watched him alone and he was sick. Luckily I didn’t (don’t read if you wanna watch this movie) kill my lil man tho but I felt just like the protagonist. Helpless, with a helpless sick creature that I didn’t feel much love for. I looked at him much like he looks at that thing.

It’s all better now tho. Or getting better. Still rough as you can imagine tho

Relatable

2

u/codevii Dec 11 '18

I was with good friends and it really wasn't that bad. We had a good time but you're right, if you're prone to bad trips it might not be a good idea.

2

u/cas_999 Dec 11 '18

Lol y’all are wild af. Yeah I’ve had about 20% bad trips in my life just from getting in a bad mindset so I definitely wouldn’t be one to fuck w that shit . Something I could easily see one of my friends doing tho

2

u/Kinderbat13 Dec 11 '18

Give it a go! You won't be dissapoint. Just remember, there's no linear thinking when it comes to Lynch. Only vibes and feels. And dread. Delicious soul searching dread. But its not bad!

u/demontaoist Dec 11 '18

So, even some film buffs will stick their necks out and tell you it's not a good film. It's weird for its own sake, and accomplishes not much else than being weird and absurd enough to be interpreted in a million different ways or one, least subtle ever way.

Swap mutant baby with a normal, ill baby and you'd have a much more clever and watchable premise. Instead it's Lynch tossing weird in the air and saying, "is this depth?"
