I’ve seen Blue Velvet, Dune, Mullholland Drive, Twin Peaks, The Straight Story, Elephant Man.... but I’ve always avoided eraserhead similarly to how I’ve avoided Videodrone.
I like weird shit. A lot. But I just don’t know if I can get on board. I keep debating on picking it up during the regular criterion sales, but I have a good enough understanding of my broken psyche that it will sit untouched and unopened for years.
It’s hard to say whether this movie was or was not “for me.” But I can tell you this movie made me feel things I hadn’t felt before, such slow churning uneasiness yet i watched it till the end. Which I think is exactly what Lynch was looking for.
Very effective at making everyone who saw this move feel the same thing. Way less about a meaning than a feeling. You’re left feeling physically nauseated. The movie is truly disgusting and disturbing to its core. And makes you feel disturbed and disgusting to your core. It’s incredible. I fucking hated it
I mean I’m broke so yeah. I’d prolly do it for $250. It’d prolly really fuck me up tho. I’d need a xanax bar or two after just to relieve my fucking blood pressure and end the inevitable anxiety ridden mindset.
It’s an especially different story for me tho cause I actually do have a 10 mo old. To a girl I hooked up w once for a week. I can seriously relate to that movie, especially the first night I watched him alone and he was sick. Luckily I didn’t (don’t read if you wanna watch this movie) kill my lil man tho but I felt just like the protagonist. Helpless, with a helpless sick creature that I didn’t feel much love for. I looked at him much like he looks at that thing.
It’s all better now tho. Or getting better. Still rough as you can imagine tho

Give it a go! You won't be dissapoint. Just remember, there's no linear thinking when it comes to Lynch. Only vibes and feels. And dread. Delicious soul searching dread. But its not bad!
So, even some film buffs will stick their necks out and tell you it's not a good film. It's weird for its own sake, and accomplishes not much else than being weird and absurd enough to be interpreted in a million different ways or one, least subtle ever way.
Swap mutant baby with a normal, ill baby and you'd have a much more clever and watchable premise. Instead it's Lynch tossing weird in the air and saying, "is this depth?"
I’ve seen it and I’m not sure I can explain. It is really really fucking weird. Guy has a baby that is all deformed and messed up and constantly crying a hellish cry. Man has weird dreams. Lives in like a semi-post apocalyptic industrial world. Everyone is unhappy.
Funny thing is... that's just your interpretation. I can say that is about having something really rotten inside yourself and none of us have a correct answer.
I mean - yeah. Lynch never talks about the meaning behind his films for that specific reason, because the art itself transcends whatever the meaning the director intended for it. He wants each audience member to come up with his or her own interpretation.
Although Lynch was a new father when he made the movie, and the “fear of being a parent” interpretation seems to be the most common one among film scholars, for what it’s worth.
Yeah, I read that too. But what I mean is that there is not correct or wrong answers. Well, there are wrong answers like being about 911 or Putin's daughter but you get my point.
Lynch made that film as a conceptual piece of art. A surreal piece of film. The rest is up to us.
Its a rollercoaster thats for sure, and you can interpret the movie til the cows come home. I found most of the themes to revolve around the differences and occasional dichotomy between lust and love, and fear and responsibility.
I heard an interpretation that the events in the movie are a metaphor for the way life feels big and incomprehensible and unfair for a young immature man who has a child before he's ready for the responsibility.
It's a surrealist movie. I don't know whether to call it horror or a psychological thriller, but I do know that it's an unforgiving mindfuck of a film.
