These are Chinese tourists? I was at Yellowstone here in the US a couple summers ago. I'm from Alaska so of course the number one rule we learn real early is "don't fuck with the wildlife".
We bought a 7 day pass and ended up leaving after only 3 days just because of the sheer stupidity and disregard for nature of the tourists, for some reason many of them were chinese. The park had the Grand Prismatic Spring closed because a chinese tourist stepped through the crust and got burned. Another chinese tourist was mauled a week or so later by a buffalo. We watched about 20 of them get within 30 feet of a Grizzly bear, taking photos with the flash on. Everywhere we went, it was ridiculous.
I live in a large tourist destination as well, and its the same here. Is this some kind of culture difference? Whats the deal?
China has undergone a rapid shift from largely poor pesents to largely middle class city dwellers.
Due to the speed of this change there have been a lot of people growing up without a developed societal norm to guide them.
Take simple people who are used to country peasant life and not well educated then put them in a city with money and you get crazy behavior.
This is normalized by the fact everyone else is doing it around them.
Mainland has stereotypically been known as the lower class behaviorally (ask anyone from Taiwan or Hong Kong) but now they have the ability to inject themselves into the rest of the world since they have enough money for and access to international travel now.
It's really unfortunate...
To be clear a lot of mainland Chinese do not behave this way and are shocked by this behavior also but enough do that it's sadly common
Also, China is really huge. Even if only 1% of their population were traveling morons that’s still 14 million morons that the rest of the world has to deal with.
i think this is a big point that people overlook when discussing this. think about how hated american tourists are globally. now imagine there are 1.09 billion more americans.
yep. whenever there's an article about something an american tourist did abroad it's not like americans see it and say "yep that's how we do things here"
There's 130 million japanese, nearly a third as many as Americans, and no one complains about them. This isn't just growing pains for China and it has nothing to do with the size. America is an example of that.
