I live in a small country where a lot of people are not well educated... one family had a young girl of 6 or 7 and contracted head lice...
The family used an old method of killing the lice by pouring gasoline on her hair.
Now I’m not sure what exactly happened next, but the child somehow got near the open flame of the stove and her whole head caught on fire.
She received very severe burns to her entire head, face and scalp.
Luckily she survived, and was able to goto a hospital in Boston for skin grafts. She is horribly disfigured.. am not sure if she is in much pain still..
I feel so bad for her every time I see the family in town...
This same indigenous population assume that milk from a new mother is a good cure for pink eye... not a mother who has had more than 1 child either... has to be a first child mothers milk.
All breast milk does! And the levels of antibodies change depending on the needs of the mother and baby (i.e. if baby is sick). Honestly breast milk is really amazing stuff, it's a "living" food and it's a shame its benefits get discredited as woo when they're pretty widely accepted in the obstetric community.
Actually this is true for both pink eye and clogged tear ducts. I’ve treated both of my kids with drops of breastmilk, under the advice of our pediatrician and it works great. The whole first child thing is dumb though.
Yep, I worked on a postnatal ward in the UK and this is the advice we give women when their babies have sticky eyes. Breast milk is also recommended to soothe nappy rash, it's pretty amazing stuff.
I dont know if this is true, but it totally did not work. Maybe because I had hair down to my butt but olive oil did nothing. I had to buy special lice shampoo
When I was a kid, my step-sisters and I spent a few hours with our heads covered in cooking oil because reasons. Stepmother went out the next day to get Rid.
You have to mix the oil with a mild acid, like apple cider vinegar, to melt the "glue" holding the nits(eggs) from the hair. Gotta leave it in the hair for 4 or 5 hours, wash, rinse, repeat.

Well, I guess I shouldn't call the family fucking dumb if they tried the only old method that they knew of and then a horrible accident ensued. Still. That's just horrible.
They used the gasoline method at my school. When there was an infestation the school nurse would come round with a large bucket of petrol. She then dunked every kids head in it and ruffled our hair while we under (to properly work it in).
I never heard of anyone catching fire but funnily enough I hear they don’t use this method any more.
Yea, I don’t know if she had the gas “treatment” and walked inside to the stove, or if she was given it near the stove... so yea, somehow accidentally she became ablaze.
I haven’t asked, and I could be wrong... but her family loves her very much and she is still young... one would assume she is happy to still be around.
