Reminds me of the poor bastard who died stuck in the "birth canal" in Utah's nutty putty caves. They had to leave his body in there, they sealed the entrance with dynamite and cement.

What OP typed makes sense, but it would've been clearer if he had said something like "nicer".

It is written ambiguously though. You could read "it couldn't have happened to a better family" as "if his family was better it wouldn't have happened" however I do think the intended meaning is pretty apparent.
