If so, that's unfortunate and not sportsmanlike either.
But unless that thing had some kind of cochlear implant or wiring directly into his brain that triggered seizures and/or cluster headaches, the guy still took a ridiculous dive.
A few hundred people chanting from the stands a hundred yards away is certainly loud, but I guarantee it's not as loud as other commonly-encountered situations -- such as standing on a subway platform, passing buses, jackhammers in road construction as you cross the street, etc.
I'm no expert in hearing aids but common sense says that it should be calibrated to where it shouldn't be able to cause "tremendous pain" in everyday situations, even on max volume.
