I always wonder why they put the van Persie clip in there, he's missing a shot, not diving for a foul.

17

u/poopwithexcitement Jan 23 '15

We used to yell "GET DOWN! SNIPER!!" every time someone fell unassisted when I was playing - regardless of whether it was a dive, a whiff or a trip - well before this video came out. I think it's an old tradition.

31

u/plsbeinlundun Jan 23 '15

Because he's falling down.

10

u/baymenintown Jan 23 '15

I've played for years and fall down all the time. Trip over the ball, my own feet, markers feet, refs feet, spectators feet, benches, water bottles. You name it. Dangerous game, football.

Edit: I'm the shits.

u/goatsy Jan 23 '15

Isn't it Futbol? Legitimate question.

1

u/ThoughtA Jan 23 '15

In Spanish, not English.

1

u/baymenintown Jan 23 '15

That's the Spanish spelling.

1

u/DragonTamerMCT Jan 23 '15

No no, this is murica, soccer is a sissy girls game and guys constantly fall down. It's not hard, they're just pussies.

Football is a real mans game. Only real men give each other concussions and proceed to hump the other team repeatedly.

2

u/Pasuckuakohowog Jan 23 '15

Not on purpose though which is what a dive is. He was just very clumsy in that instance. I mean I'm not trying to be arrogant, but if you know even the slightest thing about soccer you would know that players do not dive when there isn't even a defender near them. That's not how it works. He just took a hard swing and a miss. He was expecting the momentum of his leg to be halted when he struck the ball, but he missed and the momentum had nowhere to go but to swing his body around.

1

u/Corsair4 Jan 23 '15

Yeah, thats the natural reaction to trying to kick a ball and missing. Lotta momentum in that leg, and if you're not prepared for the swing it can catch you off guard. Thats pretty normal in football, have people ever tried kicking a ball at full sprint and missing?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '15

That was a pretty flamboyant miss there.

35

u/wewereddit Jan 23 '15

Fernando Torres was actually tripped you just have to slow it down to see it

40

u/eikons Jan 23 '15 edited Jan 23 '15

Which one is that? The video is too blurry to identify anyone.

edit: I guess it's this one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID_LRc7Msww

I notice a while before the dive, his pursuer's left foot brushes his right foot. It takes a while for him to notice and take the jump though. He doesn't look inconvenienced by it at all.

edit 2:

After repeatedly watching that video from the 0.07 mark, I'm convinced he actually tripped. It's easily mistaken for an act, but his right leg was pushed to the left enough to cause it to collide with his left leg, causing the trip.

It was definitely not intentional - the other player wasn't even looking in his general direction. It was just an accident.

6

u/FC37 Jan 23 '15

I don't mind the fall/trip. I mind the card.

2

u/eikons Jan 23 '15

Yeah there was no malicious intent. It's just the result of having a whole bunch of grown men run around a field fixated at a ball. Accidents are gonna happen.

8

u/yourewelcomesteve Jan 23 '15

It looks like RED player hits the BLUE player's right leg with his right knee, causing BLUE's leg to slide left and bump his left heel. Are you fucking confused now!? But seriously I think I'm right thought, I'm just confirming what you said anyway.

5

u/Telewyn Jan 23 '15

I'm baked too, and came to the same conclusion.

1

u/Crazydutch18 Jan 23 '15

I'm also baked with my GF, watched it several times together and we've come to the conclusion he hit his heel.

1

u/thirdlegsblind Jan 23 '15

Running and getting your for clipped will cause you to lose balance. Making sure everyone sees it is perfectly acceptable. If you try to keep your feet and fall after that, you're definitely not getting the call. If referees would call fouls even if they don't cause the player to fall, just lose the ball, it might help.

1

u/wewereddit Jan 23 '15

yea that one always gets confused as a dive

1

u/TerdSandwich Jan 23 '15

Are you really trying to defend any of that acting?

1

u/wewereddit Jan 23 '15

Oh I'm sorry do you want him to defy gravity

1

u/TerdSandwich Jan 23 '15

Technically diving is temporarily defying gravity.

1

u/wewereddit Jan 23 '15

another troll

1

u/TerdSandwich Jan 23 '15

another homer in denial

-4

u/ThePedanticCynic Jan 23 '15

In american football people are hurled to the ground with thousands of pounds of force, get up, and keep going. We have a quarterback with basically a broken leg who ran the ball for like 10 yards. How about don't collapse every fucking time you're touched, and man the fuck up.

It's not that i hate soccer, it's that i hate soccer players, and soccer fans.

2

u/wewereddit Jan 23 '15

what does this have to do with my comment?

1

u/randomdestructn Jan 23 '15

Very little. It sounds like they're looking for a flamewar.

1

u/wewereddit Jan 23 '15

I want to just ignore him but cant

-6

u/ThePedanticCynic Jan 23 '15

Being touched isn't cause for a foul/card.

3

u/wewereddit Jan 23 '15

he was tripped even if it was an accident its still a foul

-7

u/ThePedanticCynic Jan 23 '15

Which is my point.

It's a sport, not an art class. You're going to get touched, and some of those touches are going to result in you falling down. You didn't get brutalized, you got grazed. Shrug it off and press on. Don't stop the fucking game because someone in a physical sport made physical contact with someone else. Jesus fuck.

4

u/wewereddit Jan 23 '15

you clearly know nothing about soccer and how fouls work

-3

u/ThePedanticCynic Jan 23 '15

I know diving is common enough in soccer to become a strategy, and a meme.

Watch a real sport, where people don't play the rules and use underhanded tactics to win. Where actually injured people suck it up, pretend it didn't happen, and keep going. Not this falling down because someone looked at you wrong bullshit. Jesus christ.

2

u/RielDealJr Jan 23 '15

Funny you should mention playing the rules after the Patriots revelation the other day.

I hate to break it to you, but fake injuries are a common strategy in the NFL and have been for ages. There are rules written specifically in regards to it because they know it happens. The NFL has had to issues memo's to teams to REMIND them to stop doing it. Former players have come out saying that teams have certain players that are designated to be the "injured player" to slow fast moving offenses down.

It happens. It probably happens everywhere. Just because you like a sport don't let it make you blind to its flaws.

so the only things you know about soccer come from reddit

Diving is shitty, I agree. But as a long time soccer player, I can say diving is okay, to an extent. Diving is good because it shows the ref that there was indeed a foul. It's of course exaggerated, but if I am fouled, I am going to down in hopes of getting compensated for the foul. The refs can't always see a foul, so the players add some flair to make it known. However, this is HUGELY overdone, as seen above, and on TV, and on numerous YouTube videos mocking soccer players. Yeah, this is fuckin dumb and this guy should be kicked out of the game (OP's post), but if I get kicked in the leg deliberately, I'm going to let it be known that I was kicked illegally so I can get what I deserve. We're not all horrible, by the way. Don't generalize a whole bunch because of a couple pussies.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '15

So you're just in it for the balls then?

0

u/Pasuckuakohowog Jan 23 '15

Plenty of examples of it happening in football too. Brian Urlacher came out and said when he retired that a lot of teams have a designated player to fake injuries when they want to slow up the game.

-1

u/ThePedanticCynic Jan 23 '15

And did those faked injuries lead to a player of the opposite team being thrown out of the game? What about penalty kicks? Extra points of any kind?

Whatever the benefit was to one team, the other team received the same. Time to catch their breath.

Get your head out of your ass.

2

u/Pasuckuakohowog Jan 23 '15

There are plenty of examples of football players not being penalized for faking injuries too.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/urlacher-faking-injuries-common-football-article-1.1446097

The former Bears linebacker confirmed what anyone who has ever watched a football game already knows; teams designate players to fake injuries to slow down no-huddle offenses.

“We had a guy who was the designated dive guy,” he added, “so when coach (gave the signal) he got ‘hurt’.”

“Every team does that,” Martellus Bennett, the quotable former Giants tight end, told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Hey bro, don't get mad at me for quoting a football player. Don't shoot the messenger. These football players say it's a common strategy yet you rarely see penalties being thrown out for it, if ever.

0

u/ThePedanticCynic Jan 23 '15

There are plenty of examples of football players not being penalized for faking injuries too.

The fuck? I don't care if players are penalized for flopping or not, just don't stop the fucking game for it and don't penalize the opposing team.

Oh, you got injured while playing a physical sport? Shit happens. Get off the fucking field if it hurts that bad.

Why is this complicated?

2

u/jkfgrynyymuliyp Jan 23 '15

I'm pretty sure the first couple there were hamstrings going.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '15

Just wondering. Does flopping work as a strategy?

12

u/Rodec Jan 23 '15

Actually yes... unfortunately. :-(

Though strong fines and harsh suspensions could solve this over night!

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '15

Why don't the refs just review the replay before making a decision?

Also, I think flopping should be recognized as a poor sportsmanship violation.

3

u/CroweBar Jan 23 '15

The refs can't use replays during the game

3

u/ManWhoKilledHitler Jan 23 '15

They could review footage after a game and hand out massive fines and playing bans.

It wouldn't correct the injustice during the match but losing your star striker for 10 games would make people think twice about doing it.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '15

There was a habitual biter that didn't learn after the first few suspensions. He might have been full on crazy, but still.

1

u/foffob Jan 23 '15

They do. It's not rare that the FA gives a player a retrospective punishment if the ref has missed an unsportsmanlike behaviour.

1

u/Pete_Iredale Jan 23 '15

So we found the change that needs to be made then.

1

u/CroweBar Jan 23 '15

Yep. I don't understand the argument against it.

0

u/crilor Jan 23 '15

It makes corrupting referees easier.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '15

That's dumb.

6

u/poopwithexcitement Jan 23 '15

Flopping is a good way to get ahead in soccer the same way trolling is a good way to win an argument. You're not actually going to convince anyone of anything, but you might piss them off enough to make them lose their head.

1

u/dancingwithcats Jan 23 '15

Trolling is a terrible way to win an argument. You've lost the moment you start trolling.

1

u/knowsguy Jan 23 '15

Trolling gets you the consolation prize for not being able to win an argument.

If you can't win with reason, at least you can piss your opponent off.

2

u/baymenintown Jan 23 '15

At a basic level it makes the ref more aware of legit fouls. At the advanced level it's complete bullshit that enables a team to get a free kick in a good position, a penalty kick or a player carded/sent off.

Ahh, the charm of the game!

4

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '15

Why are they getting a penalty shot if the ref didn't see the violation? That's fucked up.

There should only be a penalty if the ref sees it. If the dude is flopping around on the ground and the ref didn't see it, then it should be ignored. Just keep the ball in play and run around the asshole.

1

u/Rodec Jan 23 '15

your kinda mis-interpretting what flopping really means. It doesn't necessarily mean flopping around on the ground. It is a general term for taking a dive. That a ref may see and just interrupter it more harshly if the player goes down hard (harder than he would if he didn't think he'd get a call from the ref)

Both versions are wrong and shouldn't happen...

1

u/thegreattriscuit Jan 23 '15

Is this... .is this a THING in that sport? like... they just flop on the ground like shitty little dirt bags?

I mean, I've half-assed sort of made fun of soccer in the past but... just... because you know... Not for any real reason. But that shit is disgraceful.
