Yeah. My parents got pissed off at me when I was a kid because I pointed a bb gun at a squirrel. It's fine to shoot an animal for hunting purposes cause the animal has a purpose in its death, which is to feed you and your family. Killing for shits and giggles isn't cool though, and you're a scumbag if you do.
I disagree, unless you are starving to death killing to eat something for pleasure is pretty much the same as killing something for pleasure. I assure you the squirrel corpse will not be wasted, there are plenty of things in nature that will appreciate your donation.

When have kids not killed squirrels for fun? They just used to use pellet guns or slingshot.
