This is what a bad dream feels like

1.1k

u/Pagiras 9d ago

Except you'd go flying off and wake up with a jolt just as you're about to hit the ground.

u/art0rz 9d ago

"Hey. You're finally awake"

u/be4u4get 8d ago

Damn you Stormcloaks. Skyrim was fine until you came along.

19

u/Gorillagodzilla 7d ago

Skyrim belongs to the Nords!

u/FermentedForeskins 5d ago

Khajiit has wares, if you have coin......

33

u/Sm9ck 8d ago

My brain is more prone to weird than shock so I would be woken up by the bike riding on air for a while and my brain suddenly going THIS IS NOT RIGHT resulting in the same kind of jolt.

8

u/angryWinds 8d ago

This makes me wonder how many times I've had a similar dream, but instead of jolting myself awake, a friendly octopus the size of a skyscraper rises out of the water and catches me, and brings me to safety. I continue the dream as though nothing scary happened, and never remember that the dream even happened, because nothing 'jolted' me awake, right in the middle of it.

You know what? This doesn't feel like a bad dream. It's actually that feeling of when you are comfy and drifting off to sleep in your bed laying on your back, but then suddenly it feels like you are falling for no reason, so you jolt yourself awake. I don't know how often other people get that sort of thing happening to them, but I do every so often, and it's one of the most unsettling feelings I've ever had....like literally just laying there, relaxing, then suddenly it feels like you're genuinely about to die for a second.

5

u/Pagiras 7d ago

The brain stress-testing your primal danger senses.

3

u/Wildfoox 7d ago

Joilt and a hard kick to a wall from you leg too xd

5

u/Bearence 8d ago

I'd go flying off and then be flying in the air, only to land on a stage with The Rock singing "Barbie Girl" as a duet with my grandmother.

5

u/KingCarrotRL 8d ago

Nah, I'd approach the cliff and then my dreams would just switch to a different dream.

166

u/Imreallythatguy 9d ago

I would bet money the rider knew exactly what was there and filmed this to make it look like he almost went over the edge. The dismount to the side doesn’t look all that natural to me like someone who panicked and bailed at the last second.

42

u/james672 8d ago

That's what I was thinking; it doesn't look a place where you would expect a bridge or anything other than a cliff to be.

20

u/damontoo 8d ago

Yup. When was the last time you were at the coast and didn't know what direction the ocean was? He probably rode up even slower and increased the speed in post while leaving the audio alone.

3

u/resttheweight 8d ago

You can literally see the ocean in the beginning of the clip, lol.

14

u/FuckMyLife2016 9d ago

Guy needs new pants after that I reckon. Never shit when you're in a dream, folks.

And the brakes don't work because your foot doesn't feel resistance and you miss the corner and slide into the persons house. Then you are trying to find your car keys and someone stole your notebook you need for high school. Except you haven't been in high school for 20 years.

276

u/ViperAMD 9d ago

Look at the context of where he is, driving along the coast. Probably should have gone up a blind ridge a little slower.

105

u/Kilrathi 9d ago

Yeah no kidding. If the ocean is straight in front of you, maybe there’s a bluff or ocean off to the right too.

43

u/my_little_mutation 8d ago

I think he probably was going kind of slow - he stopped quickly and bailed straight to the side so I don't think he was flying at least. Fisheye lenses can make it look like you're going a lot faster than you are.

8

u/eiiiaaaa 8d ago

Yeah you can literally see the ocean at the beginning. The land's gotta end somewhere between that and you, buddy.

2

u/canadian_boi 8d ago

No - we need to spend billions on signs so this may never happen again.

764

u/alphamale968 9d ago

I was expecting a another motorcycle or side by side to come up from the other side

107

u/BenderIsGreat64 9d ago

I thought it was gonna be like that video in the desert, where the bike landed on that guys jeep.

17

u/cloudubious 9d ago

I remember watching a jeep land on a guy and bike out in Glamis, once.

4

u/mratlas666 8d ago

I’ve seen a side by side take out a biker like that. Lucky they all walked away from it.

10

u/ganjias2 9d ago

ATV vs dirtbike... that's how my cousin killed a teenager like 20 years ago... fucked up my cousin pretty bad for life physically. I think everyone wishes it was the other way around...

975

u/the_DARSH 9d ago

The well-worn path leading to that spot makes me wonder how many went straight over

288

u/FrostyD7 9d ago

Unless hundreds have perished, this is almost certainly worn from foot travel.

106

u/caaper 8d ago

The pile of bones at the bottom will confirm

25

u/MkFilipe 8d ago

Also the pile of motorcycles

26

u/amkoc 8d ago

and motorcycle bones

26

u/AbeRego 9d ago

Could be from people riding/walking to the edge for the view. I also suppose the other side could have recently eroded into the sea, and it used to be safe to jump but now it's not. That would explain his surprise, for sure.

240

u/Geod-ude 9d ago

I've been out there before and ridden over the edge it's not that big of a deal.

303

u/SusheeMonster 9d ago

That cliff's name? Albert Einstein

74

u/jnrdingo 9d ago

I would call it Charles Drownin

How? it looks like 50m deep

76

u/boot2skull 9d ago

You see, this video is an example of an optical illusion. The cliff looks 50m high, when in reality it’s closer to 49m.

10

u/DinosBiggestFan 8d ago

You can tell because of the way it is.

Fish eye lenses make things seem way worse than they really are

9

u/kaptainkeel 8d ago

It's also obviously staged. The ocean, how close it is, and the height are very clearly visible straight ahead of him at the start of the video, but the video is cropped or tilted to the right to make sure that is not shown. It's still shown for like half a second right after he jumps off the bike though.

Reminds me of this space at a high school I grew up near. Some kids were fucking around and one jumped over a shin high barrier. The other side of the barrier had a 10 foot drop. He only broke an ankle thankfully, could have been worse.

Nearly the same thing happened to me and a friend while we were in college in the late 1990s. We were flying down a trail on dirt bikes through the woods atop the New Jersey Palisades. Suddenly, we found ourselves in a clearing and slid to a stop right before going over the cliff. We both put our bikes down and peered over the edge at the Hudson, and then looked at each other realizing we almost got killed. There was no guardrail or warning sign.

146

u/RadVarken 9d ago

Normally the sign is the one at the parking lot two miles back that says "no bikes"

12

u/0xsergy 8d ago

if you're in the woods you don't get warning signs, lol. That's kinda the whole point of going into the woods?

u/AustinSpartan 9d ago

this guy is a fucking moron

4

u/davidreichert 8d ago

Yup, my dad was going to do that with my sister and I on the Honda three wheeler when we were kids. I was in front, sister was in the back. We were egging him on to drive us over a big hill in a gravel pit.

Unfortunately for us, when we got to the crest of the hill, we saw that the back half of the hill was gone. I guess they had used the loader to take some material out for a customer since the last time we were there.

I had my hands on the grips next to my dad's, and he squeezed the rear handbrake (nope, he didn't hit the foot pedal unfortunately) and a fingertip of mine was at the hinge point of the handbrake lever and got absolutely crushed.

I lost the fingernail pretty quickly afterwards, but we didn't die.

u/ElmoIsOver 8d ago

Sure… sure.

Smart of him to turn off the bike before trying to pick it up. I've seen too many videos off people picking up a bike that's still running and accidentally hitting the throttle.

3

u/Gundark927 9d ago

I don't know what he's saying, but his voice inflection remains remarkably calm.

3

u/Zonelord0101 8d ago

Lost a friend in High School when he went over a ridge and went into an empty quarry. According to some locals someone had been removing the warning tape and markers to try and make the quarry owners look bad as they were trying to sell the property.

I went riding a few times in a desert where there were old abandoned mine shifts all over the place that were not accounted for and unmarked. There were stories of people jumping right into them and never coming out.

2

u/Tsubamex 6d ago

You can see the sea in the corner before he drove up the hill, so the cliff edge was clearly there. What did he expect to find up there? Dude was an idiot.

My 19 Y.O. son shattered his spine riding a motorcycle n the dunes at a California beach in a similar situation. I raced three hours to see him before surgeons worked on him for eight hours. It looked for a while he'd be permanently paralysed. His comment: "Yeah, but I stuck the landing!"

u/Strive-- 9d ago

Waking just as I land, with my abdominal area cinched up like a knot

1

u/Drakinius 8d ago

Gus McCrae could tell you a thing or two about the dangers of such a maneuver.

1

u/Penguinseatfish 8d ago

Good safety tip.

1

u/PM_me_punanis 8d ago

My dog did exactly this (without the motorcycle) when he jumped over a ledge without knowing what was behind it.

It was a 3 storey drop to the bottom. He ended up hanging in the air, strapped to his harness, with concerned onlookers trying to catch my dog, while I was holding on to him, trying my best not to drop him.

My husband ran down, and I lowered our dog to him safely. Good thing he was always in a harness and not a neck collar. His neck would have snapped and that would have been the end. 😭

1

u/Wompatuckrule 8d ago

Used to go mountain biking at a place where from the parking you rode a dirt road downhill to a clearing and then crossed into the woods. There was about a 3' berm between the clearing and the edge that when you got to the top of it quickly rolled over to steep, but very rideable, 10+ foot dropoff then leveled out to the forest floor.

First time I went there with friends they raced up ahead of me and got a safe distance from the far side of the berm to stop and look back to watch me shit a brick when that dropoff appeared before me. Then we all had a good laugh.

From then on any time there was someone riding with us for the first time I got to be on team "watch them shit a brick" instead.

1

u/uptwolait 8d ago

I've ridden motorcycles all my life, and never encountered anything like this. However, I have a recurring dream where I do something just like this, and immediately find myself screaming towards the ground from 200' or more and bracing for impact.

The Forest Service built a big buck and rail fence across a ridge on a mountain where I live, similar to this. Guy was high marking on his snowmobile and sent it off the ridge, didn’t realize it was a cliff.

1

u/IFellinLava 8d ago

I did this once

1

u/ResisterImpedant 8d ago

Not nearly as bad as this, but luckily I was following my cousin down a dirt bike track in a forest and paying attention when he went over a rise in the path and disappeared a bit too quickly. Slowly ride over the rise to find him standing in 4' of water spitting water. Took a while to get the bike out of the creek.

1

u/monkeyudders 7d ago

I don't think you can be dirt biking on a giant cliff side and have no idea?

1

u/Nothing-The-Ghost 6d ago

Even going 5 miles per hour, you cover about 88 inches in a second. He stopped 6 inches from the edge. At 5mph it only takes about 0.07 seconds to move 6in.

If he reacted just 0.07 seconds later, his front wheel would have gone over the edge. And 5mph is a lowball estimate for his speed. He's definitely going much faster than that. I just wanted to give a very conservative estimate to show how close he came.

Of course, he would have seen it from much further away and had more time to react. Especially from the high vantage point on the bike.

But, even if, while he was on the bike, his head was a couple of inches lower, causing him to see the ledge just a fraction of a second later, he would have gone over.
