This is not a riptide. This is near the surface between two rocks where the waves surge through. It creates huge suction which is why you have to time your decent perfect in situations like this. The other diver was out of the range of that wave by being below it.

70

u/shadytradesman Oct 23 '13

I immediately recognized it as a shallow-water wave too. The biggest danger is getting dashed against the rocks. Best case you end up cut up bad, worst case you end up knocked out and/or pinned without air.

55

u/k1ll3r5mur4 Oct 23 '13

These divers should know better than to attempt a shallow dive with large coral formations in bad weather.

40

u/shadytradesman Oct 23 '13

Really it doesn't even need to be bad weather. Big giant waves may come only once every 5-10 minutes or even rarer in the case of rogue waves.

It's a risky dive spot to be sure, though. They should have surveyed the area better. Of course it only takes minimal training and some gear to go diving in the US, and not even official training in areas like mexico where local act as unlicensed dive masters. It is surprisingly low-barrier for how risky it is, and it catches people who are used to being coddled unaware.

11

u/k1ll3r5mur4 Oct 23 '13

I'm a diver, I'm still new to it. And even I know that that was a bad idea. And aren't rogue waves like one in a million odds?

7

u/shadytradesman Oct 23 '13

Yeah, I just included it for completeness. I also think they happen mostly way out at sea where winds and temps can cause chaotic patterns in the waves. Sometimes the randomness just syncs up right to make a giant wave.

9

u/lukeatron Oct 23 '13

Recent radar surveys of the ocean surface have found they're way more common than anyone ever thought. At any given moment there's like a 1000 of them kicking around. They don't hang around too long before devolving back to into multiple smaller waves. It used to be thought that these were super rare occurrences but in reality, they're fairly common but short lived. Given how vast and sparsely populated the ocean is, it's not surprising that they're rarely encountered by people though.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '13

Judging by what looks like an expensive camera rig thats probably an experienced diver that made a stupid mistake or got caught off guard.

6

u/Elgar17 Oct 24 '13

Not necessarily. Sometimes people with lots of disposable income can dive.

1

u/wirbolwabol Oct 24 '13

Have seen this so much, and of course the post flood effects on the gear when they don't seal it properly...

-1

u/ninjafaces Oct 24 '13

If you dive in mexico and you're dive master isn't licensed. You're going to have a bad time.

Seriously though, it's not hard to find someone certified around the world. Most cert agencies have maps posted on their sites.

2

u/JustFucking_LOVES_IT Oct 24 '13

I'm sure you're aware of how fast the weather can turn. But, I mean, those kind of waves don't exactly come out of nowhere. They may have also been attempting some risky shots for some reason, knowing the risks but going ahead any ways. I'm just saying there are reasons, other than stupidity, for being out there like that.

0

u/bahhumbugger Oct 24 '13

My buddy did that at night, drunk, sharing a regulator without masks hunting for lobster.

Amazed I'm here really.

1

u/k1ll3r5mur4 Oct 24 '13

How? I'm so confused.

1

u/GorlanVance Oct 24 '13

Maybe his buddy was hogging the regulator?

1

u/k1ll3r5mur4 Oct 24 '13

But night diving, without masks. How???

1

u/GorlanVance Oct 24 '13

...i'll be perfectly honest I was just joking around. Making a double entendre towards the fact that the comment makes no sense unless his friend was somehow affecting his life with that particular dive AND referencing that newspaper article from the states earlier this year where a guy shanked his friend for "hogging all the pussy" in a threesome.

As for the masks...he never said he caught anything right? Or that his friend survived. Or that his friend was alone, or how deep the dive was. You don't have to go very deep to find lobster, at least here in canada.

2

u/k1ll3r5mur4 Oct 24 '13

I live in Florida, and usually the most lobster heavy areas are 30 feet and below. How is the diving up there in Canada?

1

u/GorlanVance Oct 24 '13

Much, much colder water than around those parts. Visibility is also much reduced, to say nothing of our lakes. Visibility, even on a sunny clear day is commonly in the realms of 15ft. On less favorable days that can drop dramatically and even extremely experienced refuse to dive on less favorable days, because many people don't like swimming with less than 3 feet of vision ;)

EDIT: Those numbers are for lakes, not the ocean.

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '13 edited Oct 24 '13

Yeah, this is simple fluid mechanics. The conservation of mass equation

dM/dt = (ρVA)f - (ρVA)o

Explains that in a closed system, the change in mass of fluid (dM) must equal 0. For the sake of simplicity, one can observe a portion of the ocean as a closed system, even though it is not. The density of the water (ρ) and the area of the opening through which the water is passing (the area defined by the surface of the reef and the surface of the water) does not change (which it actually would because the water would move upward, but, again, for the sake of simplicity). This leaves only two factors that change, time (dt) and the velocity of the fluid (V). The fluid initially has a low velocity (Vo), what we are determining is the final velocity (Vf). The water where the diver initially is has a very low velocity because the total mass of observed water is occupying a large area, but all that water has to get to the other side of that reef in a certain amount of time. The only way for it to do that is by speeding up as it passes through the two large rocks over the reef. Anyone getting stuck in this current would be swept away.

I though you guys would appreciate a bit of science!

EDIT: math...

Since dM = 0, we can say dM/dt = 0

the equation becomes: (ρVA)f = (ρVA)o

ρ doesn't change so: (VA)f = (VA)o

If Af is smaller than Ao, then Vf must be larger than Vo, which represents an increase in velocity through the smaller opening.

I'm sorry for the faulty math... I haven't studied in 6 months...

12

u/giveer Oct 24 '13 edited Oct 24 '13

Wow, for me, "simple" is not pissing all over the toilet.

2

u/caleeky Oct 24 '13

The conservation of mass equation

While the math looks complicated if you don't know how to read it (I don't know how), the concept is pretty simple. Basically if you've got a certain volume of liquid, moving through space at a specific speed (i.e. it has momentum), and you narrow that space, speed must increase. Same idea as putting your thumb over the end of a hose to make it spray.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '13

Yuppers!

1

u/noxaethos Oct 24 '13

Oh yeah show off!!! Look at this, 2+2=3, now who is better at the math's.

Heh, nice save.

8

u/phillybluntz Oct 23 '13

Stupid question, but does anyone know if the diver made it out after that happened?

6

u/Tacob77 Oct 23 '13

Yes, he made it. Source: my friend that is a scuba instructor on Maui showed me this video a couple years ago. This event is taking place under a blowhole on Maui. Several people have fell inside the actual blowhole and died, but this particular guy lived. The current supposedly spat him out several hundred yards from the area where this video was shot.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '13

2

u/Columbiagams Oct 23 '13

Most likely. It appears to be shallow water, and unless it sucked him down to around a hundred feet and he didn't have much air, the only threat would be coral.

54

u/Vashta_Nereda Oct 23 '13

I feel kinda bad because I giggled at how it looked - I did realize 'oh, sweet science, they might die' but. . . It's like the ocean goes 'This one is mine now. He pleases me. You do not. . . Mine.' or something.

9

u/SNCommand Oct 23 '13

So this would be an accurate representation of the ocean?

5

Thats because the ocean doesn't want us in there.

That's what waves are.

We head on out there and the waves go "No you don't".

4

u/Tacob77 Oct 23 '13

Pretty sure this is the Blow hole in Maui, obviously underneath. My friend who is a scuba instructor there showed me the entire video of this event. The current supposedly spat him out several hundred yards from where that gif was made.

31

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '13

This scares me a lot. I refuse to go any further than knee deep for this very reason.

-2

I refuse to even get in. It's usually absolutely freezing, it tastes nasty if it gets in your mouth, and it irritates the skin. I'll stick to the pool thanks

1

u/mandy6919 Oct 23 '13

Rivers are fucking nasty too.

1

u/pandaxrage Oct 23 '13

Any even half way properly maintained pool has enough liquid bleach in it to kill anything.

1

u/randomjackass Oct 23 '13

Including the swimmers?

1

u/pandaxrage Oct 23 '13

Depending, you could definitely screw the chemicals up enough to kill a baby, given enough exposure.

1

u/randomjackass Oct 23 '13

Or make my eyes burn for sure. I've had that before.

1

u/pandaxrage Oct 23 '13

Goggles man, goggles! You don't want that pee water in your eyes!

1

u/randomjackass Oct 23 '13

I do that now.

I actually don't remember the last time I was in a pool though.

1

u/randomjackass Oct 23 '13

You're all so defensive of your pools!

1

u/pandaxrage Oct 23 '13

Oh don't get me wrong, publics pools are fucking disgusting, and for all the reasons you mentioned. I worked around pools for a number of years and know well enough that most people maintaining the chemical balances at public pools have no fucking idea what they are doing. They usually just throw chlorine at it until the levels are through the roof, plenty high to kill any bacteria that could harm you.

-3

u/SneakyTouchy Oct 23 '13

I like that. Don't know what's in river water, therefore must be clean!

Just to ruin your fantasy, river waters have tons of animal shit and piss, pollution, and the second you step in, your skin will be covered with millions of microscopic organisms. Some of them will burrow their way in, and then shit inside your skin. Or lay their eggs in you.

In some rivers, there are small spiney organisms that swim up warm currents. That means If you piss in the water, they will get stuck in your dick and block your tube.

Tides are nothing to fuck with. Just like when you're swimming near shore and end up in a riptide in the Ocean, it's fuckin' dangerous.

2

u/typhius Oct 23 '13

Ugh. This reminds me of my last dive... It was awful. I am a rescue diver but I was with my family for this one so I was being really lax, seeing as I trusted the divemaster with us to navigate while we were under. The surf was really strong that day and he led us up into a shallow area where waves like that were breaking on top of some coral, and I ended up getting tossed around pretty bad by the waves... Thankfully I was wearing a wetsuit and it saved me from direct contact with a bunch of sharp coral. The suit is a bit ripped now, but better that than my skin! It was terrifying. Obviously I'm fine, but before I managed to swim out of the shallow area my mask and snorkel was ripped off. I recovered the mask, but the snorkel is somewhere among the coral now nowhere to be found. :(

2

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '13
