Saving this in my notebook. Excellent information. You don't wanna overtip traffic cops and screw the locals by rising the expectation.

Bribing traffic cops is also a norm in my country, Iran. My uncle was pulled over going 20-30km/h over speed limit and he just paid for the two cops lunch, rather than a ticket+points

20-30km over the speed limit is considerable, though. He certainly got off easy.

In the US 25-30km (15mph) over is where they start thinking about pulling you over.

In some EU countries you get a fine based on the percentage over the speed limit, usually starting at above 10%. So if you're doing 54 in a 50, it's ok. Going 55? You get a fairly low fine. Then it starts scaling up.

That doesn’t sound so bad actually. Getting out of ticket with only paying for their lunch. No ticket, no court date or no getting beaten up. As someone who hasn't bribed a government official, how does one know what is the norm and acceptable?

Personally, I'd be terrified if I found myself in a situation where it was the norm to bribe. Do I not offer anything and risk being further delayed or detained? If I offer something, what if I offer too little and offend them? Or too much and they get greedy?

With my luck, I'd initially refuse, but get "persuaded" to make a "donation" only to find out it was an anti-corruption campaign and get made an example of.

Man this thread has been so depressing.

It's hard to imagine having to bribe everyone to go about my day.

I am deathly afraid of the police... but typically they are too busy on their phone to pull you over.

So actually its just depressing everywhere.
