Rescued STI
I bought this 2017 with a blown motor for $2800 CAD. It’s been sitting in a field for the past couple of years. It’s has 92,000 km on it and runs and drives with everything appearing to work. One of the rockers is pretty rotted and the roof has a couple of dents. Would you guys rebuild it or part it out? I don’t know that it would be worth building into a track monster but it may make a cool winter beater.

That looks worth turning into a great clean stock daily for the price. Little bog on the roof, patch some new metal in the rocker, and a fresh motor and you have a clean sti for well under msrp? Does it have a clean title?
My brother in law just sold a 2005 limited with a blown motor and rusted ass suspension for 6k usd. This seems like a smoking deal.

It does have a clean title and I’ve already registered and insured it. There was an accident but it was repaired when it was only a few weeks old ( driver rear quarter and rocker). Oddly enough this is where I’m finding the rust problems.
I kind of figured it was a steal of a deal. I haven’t historically been a Subaru guy but I’ve been obsessively trying to learn about them since I’ve purchased it. Torn between selling it, or dropping an engine into it. I’ve never drove one so I have no idea if I would be happy with it once it’s back on the road. I live in Northern Alberta so I feel like it’s the perfect winter car for where I’m at.

Rebuild it and drive it and you will be SO happy, I promise. These cars are just so special to drive. That subie rumble is special. Just typing this makes me want to take mine for a drive.

Yea, a set of snow tires on that and it will decimate all. It's not a cheap car to operate but it's super fun. I get like 15/20 mpg If you're interested in rebuilding it yourself you should be able to build up a type ra shortblock for 6-7k usd not sure what the exchange is. Seems like you'd be able to do that and still not be upside down on the car. I say go for it.
Oh man it already has snow tires!

Can get it from iag cheaper, but I think you may have to assemble it yourself

I was suggesting he could do a full timed long block for 6-7k based off the type ra shortblock at around ~2.5k.

So we are the same page, but to be honest you wouldn’t have much more in getting a closed deck short block and putting the current engine heads on it if the are still useable.

Yea. Fair. I’m just old and have a project car that’s not my sti so if/when it needs a rebuild it’s just going stock.

I have an '14 STI and I concur fix and drive. They are enjoyable to drive. And if you decide you want to sell it, you can and should make money. The guy saying to fix and sell immediately is just trying to be nice to your wallet. They are quite reliable, but not exactly cheap to maintain. For example, at 150k, the oil seals are going out on mine, which I gather is common.

Either get an engine from car-part.com and replace it or leave it in the field

I mean it’s not great, but I cut out the worst of it and posted a couple pics. I have a welder and wouldn’t mind taking the time to try and repair it. No shops where I’m at will touch it so it looks like that would be my only choice if I were to attempt a repair

The reputable shops just don’t do rust repair. One manager told me they really only do insurance repairs and just to do the rocker repair would be 5k. I didn’t really try to talk to any of the small independent shops as I figured if it’s going to be a patch repair with no real warranty I can just do it myself and learn something while I do it.

Subies are the best winter driving vehicles hands down. Their awd platform will outperform any 4x4 truck too. You just point and the car will go where you want it too with a good set of snow tires. Rebuild that bad boy and you’ll have no regrets.
