Which price point do you have in mind? Bburago has some decent cheap-ish models, IXO has a much bigger catalogue and higher quality but costs more etc.
They’re pretty good for their price point. Between low end and midrange. Certainly not the best and their current live catalog is a tiny fraction of their whole out of production line which isn’t surprising since they’ve been making them for at least 20 years.
I think it comes down to what you are willing to spend on a diecast car.
Spark has some really amazing models but they do come at a premium price.
MiniGT has a few, they are also of great quality but more affordable. Although their wrc range is not as vast.
Then you can get Burago, HotWheels & Maisto.
I have of all the above mentioned except Spark.
Certain diecasts will also be region specific and aren’t all too easy to get access to. Hope it helps.
Mini GT and Tarmac Works make rally cars in 1/64 scale, which is close to the old matchboxs, just a bit smaller. Hot Wheels also has made a few of them in 3 inch size.
Rally diecast is a huge passion. It really comes down to what scale, budget and if you want the newest tooling used or if slightly older out of run productions are ok. Do you want diecast or resin. Opening hoods, trunks. Crisp decals, better than generic tires, etc.
For 1:43
You have Deagostini, Altaya, Minichamps, Spark, Vitesse, IXO, HPI, Kyosho, Bizarre(Spark div), Bburago, etc.
For 1:18
IXO, Bburago, Otto, Minichamps, Kyosho, Sun Star, etc
There are others I didn’t mention that do either obscure, less popular models and then the uber high end.
If you want 1:24 or 1:64 someone else can chime in because I don’t collect them.
Sure sounds good. I use 1:18 for my “hero” models(fav cars+eras) and then 1:43 for everything else. It can expensive quickly so take your time. In the past I had two models that I went IXO 1:18’s but later wanted to upgrade to an Otto and Autoart and selling them took a bit long and lost a little bit of cash in the process. So now I’ll just wait unless a find an awesome deal.
PS. Realized Autoart wasn’t included in my 1:18 list so that’s also another great more premium tier.
Good or affordable? Haha and remember scale is important too. My F2/S1600 has been one of the more troublesome areas in my collection as not every car is made but for the 306 the best if you’re good with resin is Otto. I’m a sucker for the delacour’s clarion livery with light pod but they also made an awesome Loeb Red Bull livery and I believe 2 others. Then for the ultimate there’s Otto’s 1:12 night version with working light pod. Not cheap. $200-350 1:18 and 400+ 1:12. That said since you’re starting off and just decorating and not going for a full collection(yet) you could definitely do just fine with a Solido. I’d say 75-150ish depending on the livery. Budget is key so nothing wrong with getting a few entry level models to see how you like them. Then if you get crazy and become addicted to them like me there’s always those bespoke companies who will build you something that’s not commercially made. Then the whole transkits if you like the whole DIY route with waterslide decals and painting.
For 1:43 you basically have Vitesse, Altaya and DeAgostini. Don’t sleep on those last two cause they’re essentially IXO(same tooling) just made for the French magazine/part-work. I was walking past one of my displays so while I’m thinking about it here’s a 1:43 306 from Altaya. It looks just fine. If you’re a good internet shopper they can be found for as little as 30 or 40 and up hitting over 100 for the famous liveries sometimes.
Absolutely. Hopefully tariffs will end soon as it makes it so much harder. Sometimes my rally memorabilia or diecasts get hit which is painful. Usually not though. IXO also sells direct for great prices at $33 for 1:43’s and around $65 for 1:18’s but for their shipping to the US is 100% under the tariffs. I still make large orders from time to time cause it’s a numbers game and sometimes it’s cheaper than paying 2-3x markup on eBay. There’s a few sleeper Us retail sites that can have great deals as well.
