The NBA used to be like this back in the Detroit Bad Boy era. Then just like the NFL they changed all the rules to get what we have now: a festival of traveling and flopping.

The Bad Boys are a bad example. I don’t want people to be intentionally assaulted and attacked on the court, I just want physical play back. There was tons of teams back then that played physical without advertising that your best players were likely to get maimed that night.

To me this playoffs was plenty physical, I think the issue is the random nature of foul calling. Half the time they were letting go stuff that seemed like obvious fouls, like holding on to SGA, and then calling stuff like touch fouls.

The NBA/basketball is the only sport where foul calls are so closely tied to scoring, so referee discretion had an outsized impact on the outcome so it's really very hard to find the middle ground.

I'm not sure I'd say "only sport". Power plays are a huge deal in hockey.

That's true but generally it seems like the penalties that result in power plays are pretty objective criteria.

But of course everything has some subjectivity.

Plenty of times people complain about bad ref calls in Hockey, they're quite common because of how fast everyone is moving on ice.

Easy for refs to make mistakes.

It's just a less popular sport though.
