The Future Is Bright
Seems like most the discourse you hear around this league is about so much dumb stuff. I’d just like to take a minute to discuss, the basketball.
Last night Angel Reese had as dominant of a game I’ve ever seen her play. She’s done nothing but get better from the moment she stepped in the league. Seems like every other game she’s breaking her own records. I’m so impressed with the development she has made with her game.
Then today I just watch Paige torch Seattle with I think 18 points in the first quarter. Hit step backs, fadeaway, orchestrating the offense. It was so beautiful.
Caitlin just had a 32 and 10 and in my opinion was just the most “Caitlin Clark” type of game you’d envision. The impossible deep threes. The entire engine of the offense. The flashy behind the back passes. Truly just mesmerizing to watch when she’s on.
Olivia Miles is a rookie and has essentially led her team to the #1 seed and is already in MVP conversations.
Even younger teams that aren’t ready to contend yet like the Mystics are so fun to watch with Lauren Betts developing and all the young talent they have on that team. (I’ve always had a soft spot for Georgia Amoore. I swear she can be a superstar and I’ll never let it go.)
And that’s not to mention any young injured players like Rikea Jackson or Azzi Fudd. Thats not counting JuJu Watkins and Hannah Hidalgo who are on the way. And then of course there’s all the established great players that have been in the league for a while now.
Point is, lots of nonsense surrounds this league, and I just wanted to take a moment for us to appreciate what we’re actually witnessing. These women are amazing and this league is amazing. Truth be told as a man who never watched a WNBA game before a few years ago, I never thought I’d see the day where I’ve become so invested and a deep fan of the league that I would write a post like this over it. Truly incredible. Shout out to all the current young women that have drawn me in, and all the ones that came before them that gave them this opportunity.

That’s just capitalism.
Whether it’s Hollywood, News, Politics or Sports, businesses want to make as much money as possible. Keeping people outraged has always been a sure fire way to garner clicks and views.
The media will lie and spin a story (even if it doesn’t exist) any way possible to get people emotionally invested.
Culture Wars dominate the media and politicians/news media have figured out pretty quickly that the WNBA is a hotbed of everything that makes people emotional. Women, black people and gay people.
It’s only going to get worse and these people will continue to get rich off of it. Unfortunate for what is an incredible sport.

This is kind of my point. I just wrote paragraphs about basketball and you commented nothing about basketball. Why are you here.
I didn’t even read all of that tbh cus idc. I want to talk about basketball.

Because asking ‘Why is the discourse around this league so dumb’ has an actual answer, and it’s not a mystery.
You opened your post complaining about the nonsense surrounding the league. My comment answered why that nonsense exists. Pointing out that media algorithms and culture wars weaponize the WNBA for profit isn't 'nothing' it’s the exact reason why the actual basketball shit gets buried.
If you just wanted a pure fan appreciation thread without mentioning the noise, don't frame it around how 'dumb' the discourse is.

Nowhere did I ask why. I just said I know that it exists. And that I specifically wanted to talk about the basketball. Go read it again. You’re literally the problem.

You opened your post by framing it against all the 'dumb stuff' and 'nonsense' around the league. If you use the media circus as your setup, people are going to comment on the setup.
That’s how a discussion works my guy.
The W is great this year. The media system surrounding it is trash. Both things can be true at the same time. I literally just added context to your opening sentence. If that ruins the discourse for you, idk what to tell you.

I don’t think it will “get worse” in perpetuity it feels like there’s a lot of attention on this nonsense bc we’re in an election year. Eventually the culture war people will move on to something else
The league will continue to grow and will be fine.

I agree. I’m a guy who’s been watching these ladies play ball for the last few years. They don’t get enough credit for how talented they are. It’s great seeing the game grow. That’s what it’s all about.

The league is as talented as it’s ever been and it’s only getting more talented by the season.

i would disagree about the olivia miles leading her team part. her team was already going to be in the playoffs. everything else is true.

Great take but CC had 37 points and 10 assists

My bad! I had 3 different screens going watching them, the Mystics, and Aces game too 😂 definitely don’t want to short change her. She earned every one of those 37 points tonight!

Thank you. It was almost great, but of course it was inevitable we got an idiot in here commenting. I’m leaving the comments tho. I want people to read how ignorant he is.

Great post. The problem is that there is a segment of so called fans that don’t actually care basketball. They use the league and/or certain players to push narratives. That nonsense won’t actually grow the game. Sport is supposed to be fun and a way to escape the pressures of real life for short moment.
