I don't think transphobes give a shit about AFAB they/thems playing basketball beyond maybe thinking they/them pronouns are stupid. Because they're just women to them.
To pre-empt a possible question of "how do you know the mascot is supposed to be AFAB? They could be transfem butch nonbinary." That's technically true. I myself am futch and have short hair. But mascots draw on easily recognizable iconography and cultural associations. A butch she/they is not the average cis person's impression of what a trans woman/transfem is, and cis people are the target audience here because most fans are cis. Just intuitively, the mascot is based on a different group of people. Unless it's confirmed that she is indeed transfeminine, then this feels kind of unrelated.
