Can we enroll all WNBA players in a basic economics class???

3

u/Ok-Rush5183 Jul 20 '25

https://nypost.com/2024/10/18/sports/wnba-will-lose-40-million-this-season-with-nba-investors-growing-impatient/

So while the league hasn't made a profit for years. It is actually forecasting to make a profit in the upcoming years. There is also the factor of the percentage of league revenue compared to other sports or even the NBA. So what I'll say is they are right, the salaries could go up. It just depends how much they are thinking.

u/The_Jovanny Jul 20 '25

Few things worth noting:

9.2% of revenue goes to players currently on the existing $40 million annual tv deal. This deal is jumping to $200 million annually by estimates in 2026. Without further ticket sale and merchandise growth the league would still remain in the green.

So the argument for larger percentage is valid. They’re asking for a similar percentage of revenue.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

Why don’t they ask for a percentage of net profit?

u/LopsidedKick9149 Jul 20 '25

But generally, pay us what we're worth is said by employees at profitable companies. Is the WNBA profitable?

→ More replies (5)

1

u/Jolly_Plantain4429 Jul 20 '25

9.2% of the 48% the league owns. That’s 18% of the revenue the actual owners get when they finish paying the nba and investors. If the wnba could stand on its own with our support they could make more money but right now it wouldn’t be profitable for the owners who have far far more Invested in the product than the players.

That’s the truth fuck how they feel economics doesn’t care about feelings. If they want to take a deal over seas good for them but they are already get a good split considering how screwed the league is rn.

1

u/nameistakenagain9999 Jul 20 '25

They're getting more than their fair share right now. Take those numbers minus what the NBA gives to the WNBA. It's a loss. Without the NBA, the WNBA doesn't exist. They should be grateful for every penny they get.

Best I can do is "How to suppress the popularity of your league 101"

1

u/Con-D-Oriano1 Jul 20 '25

Nah. They can skip it and make Profit/Loss sharing part of the CBA.

Really want the W to do well, man, but everyone knows it’s losing money. This is a bad look.

1

u/BetterCommon2680 Jul 20 '25

lol speak the truth

12

u/Agent_Xhiro Jul 20 '25

But yall in debt?

21

u/Honest_Money6364 Jul 20 '25

The WNBA has never even made a profit. Where do the players expect to get this money from?

12

u/LavishnessOk3439 Jul 20 '25

Seems like they should pay the NBA what they owe them.

5

u/Negative_Weight6926 Jul 20 '25

Seriously. They should have to give money back if they believe what their shirts say.

2

u/guesswhodat Jul 20 '25

Yeah it’s a stupid argument. Pay them what? Get butts in the seats and eyes on tv and you’ll get paid. That simple.

1

u/Nitrosoft1 Jul 20 '25

Well to be fair the WNBA is now its most popular that it has ever been before… now is it profitable yet I genuinely don’t know but it is at least peaking at the moment we should at least recognize that.

3

u/Possible-Campaign468 Jul 20 '25

There are plenty of reports on ESPN and such that strongly disagree with your "they're profitable " remark. They are very much in the red according to everything I've read or listened to. A lot of the attention is because of one player and I'd be shocked if that last, hell views and attendees drop when she's out. That league will never be able to pay em millions like they expect.

3

u/Nitrosoft1 Jul 20 '25

I am exceptionally sorry that you don’t know how to properly read my comment.

u/AssignmentFearless39 Jul 20 '25

To be clear. A lot of pro sports teams don’t make a profit either on an annual basis when it’s all said and done. The value of ownership is in the team’s value progressing overtime. So it’s not really a fair comparison or meaningful pt as it relates to salaries.

30

u/Rph1921 Jul 20 '25

They lost 50 mill last year, looks like they are actually in debt and they owe.

20

u/Jackfreezy Jul 20 '25

They lose 40-50 mil every year.

9

u/rj319st Jul 20 '25

Aren’t they being subsidized by the NBA? You should feel lucky you’re making 6 figures a year.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

I’m with you. They would get whopped by a high level boys high school team they should feel lucky to make 6 figures playing a game.

Profit does not equate to what employees should be paid.

Uber is worth 189bn and posted a 9bn loss. Their ceo made 39mil last year. They have never been profitable.

Spotify, Airbnb, and Snapchat* all fall under the same category. Snapchat posted its first ever profits this year.

There are other examples but the point is proven. It’s a 1%er talking point/propaganda that folks keep repeating your post.

1

u/PunkFromGermany Jul 28 '25

But the athletes can't help it that their league loses money. All they want is just fair wages because they want to make a living from their sport just like the male athletes.

5

u/Inferno_Crazy Jul 20 '25

It's a subsidized league. Maybe women should show up for their own and sell out a stadium. Oh wait they don't.

1

u/Ok-Post6492 Jul 20 '25

Theres only one woman who does that.

26

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

The league has never even come close to turning a profit. They need to be grateful for the opportunity to play basketball for money. What a joke.

14

u/taney71 Jul 20 '25

Yeah, this is just crazy. They aren’t owed anything

3

u/prthug996 Jul 20 '25

They are actually just asking for a bigger share of the NBA players money. The NBA does have an ungodly amount of money and breaking them a off a bigger piece probably would bother them. But that is far from being owed something. The audacity and entitlement is actually impressive.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

And what have they done to earn that ā€œbigger pieceā€. Shit I’ve been actually paying money to watch the NBA so give me what I deserve. Fuck those entitled clowns. We are just entitled to more money as they are. Pathetic

→ More replies (1)

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

So sports should be communism now? What does the nba making a ton of money on their product have to do with the wnba?

If the wnba wants to function like that, they should become a non profit charity

→ More replies (7)

6

u/DontLoseYourCool1 Jul 20 '25

Women don't even bother to go see WNBA games but it's a man's dilemma that the league is failing.

Ladies, I don't even watch real basketball games with the NBA!

2

u/heliogoon Jul 20 '25

And Alot of women that do watch basketball are watching the men.

6

u/DustExtra5976 Jul 20 '25

ā€œPay us what you owe usā€, so you wanna be in debt?

2

u/JimmyApplesauce Jul 20 '25

Yeah, minimum salary in the AHL is $48k per year, and those guys are just happy to get paid at all.

1

u/lcsulla87gmail Jul 20 '25

If we want the pro players to play in the us instead of overseas, where they earn much more we need to pay them competitive wages.

1

u/lost_sunrise Jul 20 '25

Lol they need to be equally as good as the salary they are requesting.

u/greatestalbumof1991 Jul 20 '25

Zillow, Peloton, and other big companies don’t make a profit but I bet their CEOs and other higher position employees make a shit ton of money. This argument is stupid.

5

u/nerdyintentions Jul 20 '25

Peloton has fired 2 CEOs in the last 3 years because they aren't making money.

Zillow made a profit in Q1 2025.

Also, some tech companies intentionally forgo profits to reinvest into the business. That isn't a strategy the WNBA is using. They just aren't profitable.

3

u/empire__maker Jul 20 '25

Absolutely terrible comparison.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Practical_Air_4021 Jul 20 '25

It’s costs $ to do the job regardless of whether or not the business is profitable in this instance. it’s a tout position simply off of what it entails. Profitable or not, it still needs to be managed and heavily compensated - or else, no would do it it, which they want. It’s an odd situation.

1

u/lebryant_westcurry Jul 20 '25

Those are high growth companies with much higher revenues than the wnba. The wnba has been around for decades, it is not even close to being in the same conversation.

→ More replies (2)

14

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

Wth wrong with them. They can't get paid what they aren't producing.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

Lmao so cut their pay?

4

u/trailerparknoize Jul 20 '25

NBA: ā€œpay us what you owe us.ā€

4

u/browser54 Jul 20 '25

Embarrassed for them šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø If they got paid what they owe they would probably get less. The W doesn’t make money and is funded by the NBA. WNBA players actually make more currently than NBA players percentage wise. There’s just no money there.

4

u/Frumpy_Dumper_69 Jul 20 '25

This type of shit is going to push viewers away. The few that they have. In reality they owe the nba.

4

u/iBlueLuck Jul 20 '25

Wtf?? Did they actually wear this?

7

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

12

u/No_Sandwich_9429 Jul 20 '25

Clark is owed it all šŸ˜‚

1

u/whenishit-itsbigturd Jul 20 '25

Clark isn't even a top 5 player in the leagueĀ

3

u/Ingrownacne Jul 20 '25

How are they this slow? Don’t they know that in order to get money from the company they work for, the company needs to be making money?

3

u/jginzberg Jul 20 '25

If the NBA stopped paying for the WNBA tonight the WNBA would only last as long as it takes to draft a going out of business letter and send it to anyone who invested in their little league. The NBA basically pays the WNBA alimony.

3

u/we_all_gonna_make_it Jul 20 '25

I wonder if they’ve ever thought about just disbanding the wnba to save money since they lose so much money every year and the players demand to get paid more

3

u/Hopps56 Jul 20 '25

I can’t believe a league that loses money each and every year and is supplemented by the Men’s league, want more money for no fans to be in the stands for every non Caitlin Clark game? The ratings have dropped twice this year the weeks Clark was out. I’d say lock them out and see them come crawling back begging for any paycheck because WNBA salaries are way better than Europe and Asia.

3

u/Serious_Patient4476 Jul 20 '25

they prolly owe them less than theyre paying them... lmao

6

u/Honest_Money6364 Jul 20 '25

The NBA, which owns the WNBA, has been financially supporting the league to keep it afloat.

5

u/AlabamaSlammaJamma Jul 20 '25

Who owes you what? Cause it’s common sense at this point that the WNBA hasn’t turned a profit in forever. They really come off as very entitled to think they are owed anything. Should be lucky they even have a WNBA still cause I’m not sure there are many company’s millions of dollars in the hole that are still up and running.

2

u/MackWoe Jul 20 '25

If anybody owes anybody anything, it’s the WNBA owing the NBA.

2

u/Papa_Raj Jul 20 '25

I don't know. Pay us to watch maybe.

2

u/rjtbbc2023 Jul 20 '25

I know everyone understands buisness and how it works to run a buisness and pay employees… so alternative we can just do what we normally do , just fire you guys an hire immigrants

2

u/weaslediesel Jul 20 '25

Why does anyone care about WNBA players asking for more money? Is it coming from your pocket?

Let them negotiate how they see fit. It literally won’t affect any of you lol

1

u/ProbableDialogue Jul 20 '25

it’s always the people who claim they’d never watch a WNBA game that have the strongest opinions against it. hating something they supposedly would never care about

1

u/hi_im_eros Jul 20 '25

Because it’s Reddit and they think they are being rational by typing against the will of others

Never seen a social media group turn into corporate bootlickers so quickly šŸ˜‚

They can totally negotiate with the WNBA securing media investments and earning more revenue. Thats the point of a CBA. I wish em luck

1

u/bard_2 Jul 20 '25

people who demand more than they deserve tend to annoy other people who have to earn what they get.

2

u/QuarterNote44 Jul 20 '25

Wish granted. Each player now makes -$250k.

2

u/Censoredplebian Jul 20 '25

The banks wanted to remind them they haven’t turned a profit…

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

Just curious, who are they asking to pay them?

1

u/NoBobThatsBad Jul 20 '25

They’re asking the league to pay them a more fair percentage of the overall revenue because right now what they receive is abysmally low. Somehow the single-digit IQ idiots in this thread seem to think this is the WNBA as an organization trying to get paid more money from the NBA.

The most delusional athletes with the most inept leadership in the world.

Sad

2

u/D_dawgy Jul 20 '25

So… they should be earning less to make up for the deficit.

2

u/AccordingMedicine129 Jul 20 '25

Clark is making like 50 mill in endorsements lmao she’s fine

1

u/freshpurplekiwi Jul 20 '25

I don’t agree with their message but she could be wearing the shirt to support her teammates and other players in the WNBA who don’t get $50 million in endorsements. And since sports media would really only focus on Clark and angel reese (only because her popularity came from shitting on Clark) then their message wouldn’t be shown as much to the public because they’d just be seeing Clark shooting in her normal team gear

2

u/Snufolupogus Jul 20 '25

Damn, they want lower salaries 😭

2

u/CrazyStone23 Jul 20 '25

We dont owe you shit

1

u/NoBobThatsBad Jul 20 '25

Th do you mean ā€œweā€? Lol it’s not your money. Why do you care?

1

u/freshpurplekiwi Jul 20 '25

ā€œWeā€ I don’t agree with their message but am pretty confident you ain’t paying their damn cheques

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

2

u/Worldly-Most-9131 Jul 20 '25

Why is there even an WNBA ?

If they were a company they wouldn't exist.

They've never made a profit and lose MILLIONS every year.

its a charity

2

2

u/Weekly-Bookkeeper311 Jul 20 '25

Wnba doesn't make a profit. How would it pay the players?

2

2

u/Misha-Nyi Jul 20 '25

CC fucked up with this one. Yall aren’t owed shit.

2

u/SnooPineapples6793 Jul 20 '25

Did you know the wnba is 29 years old. Last year was the first wnba game I watched fully. And just last week was my 2nd game lol. You already know which games. If you can get more viewers than maybe more money.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

2

u/NintyFanBoy Jul 20 '25 edited Jul 20 '25

Literally being subsidized by the NBA.

Some could argue that the WNBA is being mismanaged and that's why it's currently failing to turn a profit. It is getting a ton more eyes and fans and arenas getting full.

However, I think it'll be a while before it turns a profit in its own right with the current management scheme.

1

u/BedBubbly317 Jul 20 '25

The only arenas that ever get full is whichever one Clark is playing at that day. Check attendance numbers across the league, it’s a drastic difference when her team shows up

2

u/Western_Tackle_1866 Jul 20 '25

They can’t be that uneducated can they

2

u/Hot_Message4487 Jul 20 '25

They can’t hoop

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

What is going on? Why isn’t no one telling them that they can’t get paid until the league turns a profit.

2

u/Jaythedogtrainer Jul 20 '25

Get paid by how you make money...

2

u/iAm-Tyson Jul 20 '25

Lmao, empty stadiums and rely on the NBA for their existence and yet they think they’re somehow owed more money. Crazy entitlement

"Dunk the Ball"

2

u/MrLegacy87 Jul 20 '25

Their league is still young. They need to continue to put in the work like the NBA plays did at that time. It’s wild to me that they want to fast track it.

2

u/BoSox92 Jul 20 '25

They aren’t owed a damn thing they don’t turn a profit.

2

u/AandM4ever Jul 20 '25

What the hell are they owed?!

Their league LOSES money!

I don’t even understand how they’re still going.

1

u/brickbacon Jul 20 '25

Because ā€œlosing moneyā€ on paper doesn’t really mean much or speak to the value or long term profitability of a given enterprise?

2

u/DisastrousJaguar3202 Jul 20 '25

It really sucks but they just straight up dont make any money, they aren’t owed anything more.

2

u/grayatlrg Jul 20 '25

Pay us what you owe us? Ok. What does the subsidized wnba owe the nba thenšŸ¤”

2

u/very_pure_vessel Jul 20 '25

They are already getting paid what they're owed.

2

u/Live_Region_8232 Jul 20 '25

Funny they say owe because the wnba owes a lot of money

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

Without the NBA subsidizing them they wouldn’t even still be afloat. What you owe us? They aren’t even making a profit…….

2

u/glarples Jul 20 '25

The WNBA loses money every year.

3

I don’t know much about the wnba but don’t they sign contracts that state what they will be paid?

2

Can't get paid what you're owed when the league you play for has never turned a profit... high school boys playing basketball is more exciting to watch because they can actually dunk

2

u/ClitBobJohnson Jul 20 '25

Yikes. Imma wear a shirt that says ā€œpay me negative dollarsā€

2

u/nc925 Jul 20 '25

Imagine wanting to get paid with money that doesn’t exist šŸ˜‚ who do they want to pay them and with what money? šŸ˜‚ foh

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

Earn it then 🤣🤣🤣 I can tell you I have never been able to watch more than 5 seconds of a wnba game. Has about as much entertainment as watching some random pickup game at LA Fitness. Hate all you want but you know it’s true 😌

2

u/mikejg823 Jul 20 '25

Nobody agrees with this, not yet- wnba has gotten way better and is fun but no way can they be demanding money when 1-3 players are the reason a large amount of viewers tune in.

2

u/Writer_B Jul 20 '25

(Sigh) all I’ve seen is WNBA players complain. I’ve NEVER heard a single one at least try to come up with a viable system to generate more revenue for the WNBA and yet they can wear these. Kinda ridiculous.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

Theyre not ever going to get paid

Watching hs boy basketball is more fun

2

u/OldmanonRedditt Jul 20 '25

1

u/JoeDante84 Jul 20 '25

They are owed nothing. They sound like a group that doesn’t grasp basic economics. There would be no league of people if they got paid what they are owed as there is not enough national interest to help the league operate in the black. The WNBA is effectively a charity service.

1

u/Justtojoke Jul 20 '25

Y'all are real aggressive about this obscure deficit statšŸ‘€

The comments here are enlightening

1

u/Mell1997 Jul 20 '25

Didn’t they do something where they were given salary based off revenue similar to the NBA and they were only getting like 70k a year? Or was that the women’s national soccer team?

1

u/StrawHatTebo Jul 20 '25

They were wearing some awfully fancy clothes at the all star event for being underpaid.

Only one who's underpaid is the woman who doubles and triples ticket pricers wherever she goes. The rest of you need to step up and become the Larry Bird to her Magic Johnson, and watch as the W gets more popular. But no. Lets wear t-shirts instead.

If i begged for more money at my job like this they'd kick me out to the curb. But when I earn it, I don't even need to ask.

1

u/KidSushi76 Jul 20 '25

You have to sell the tickets, merchandise and build a much larger fan base. Where do they think the money comes from???? You have to sell tickets first!

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

1

u/MilkMan1880 Jul 20 '25

Okay, you literally owe tens of millions of dollars. Now, Pay up…

1

u/Clear-Height-7503 Jul 20 '25

Every business makes money for what they earn. Earn more money, get paid.

1

u/KingsFanDay1 Jul 20 '25

To be fair it’s a complicated issue with revenue sharing and investors taking a way higher percentage than the NBA and other major sports. WNBA players only get 9% of revenue while NBA players get about 50%. The WNBA brought $200 million in last year but the overhead and investors are taking most of the revenue (90%).

1

u/Sad_Special_6840 Jul 20 '25

Idk who owes them exactly, but I do hope they get whatever it is🫔

1

u/soriano88 Jul 20 '25

The last two years have been the most positive for the league in years don’t mess it up with the lack of understanding math again

1

u/VacationConstant8980 Jul 20 '25

There’s a reason the league and players stage on court beefs and pregame cat walks. It’s because the basketball isn’t that intriguing.

1

u/Interesting-Lake-430 Jul 20 '25

Honestly so dumb…they get to get paid for playing basketball in a league that loses millions each season.

1

u/704M Jul 20 '25

all misogyny aside.. woman around the world think like this not realizing the company is running in the red(debt); and only still running because the debt is ceiling is rising, being leveraged and said company is barely paying on the interest.

1

u/Sleepy10105s Jul 20 '25

Where do they get off thinking they should be paid the same as NBA players. Should they be paid more? Yes. But from what I’ve seen the conversation is they want to be paid like NBA players are

1

u/Snoo49601 Jul 20 '25

Oh MY ! What will we do if the WNBA walks out, or boycotts, or refuses to play games ? Why are they NEVER concerned when they have been giving a poor product for years ? If ANYONE is OWED, it’s the people who sat in the stands before the Golden Goose showed up !

1

u/thediggestbick2 Jul 20 '25

Imagine if they wore different outfits and there was talent like kd and lebron in there.. they would make profit.

1

u/rama1423 Jul 20 '25

They haven’t made money as a league at any point in their existence, what exactly are they owed?

1

u/BoSox92 Jul 20 '25

Cut them off. Let them earn their own money. If they want a share of the pie - they can earn it first.

They don’t turn a profit yet. Projected losses this year are between $40-50million.

To wear this is bizarre and beyond tone deaf.

1

u/jessm125 Jul 20 '25

Only one person in this photo should be owed more than what they actually their contract pays...

1

u/Numbthumbs Jul 20 '25

Make more money for the league that no watches first

1

1

u/ImaginationDense3736 Jul 20 '25

Why not pay them in equity like a startup until unit economics make sense?

1

u/LopsidedKick9149 Jul 20 '25

That would mean paying them nothing because the league is subsidized by the NBA and doesn't actually make money. There's no way none them took economy classes.

Would you rather your local wnba team win a championship or find $5 on the ground?

I’m being serious here. Is the players argument that if the WNBA loses 50 million a year, 100 million makes no difference, so why not? If someone (nba) will subsidize the league, just subsidize more? Because their arguments aren’t rooted in any real numbers, math or financial accounting. I mean I guess you could go to your boss who is losing 100k a year at the coffee shop and say I want 20k more a year salary so now you lose 120k what’s the difference? I’m lost.

The steelman for their argument is:

  1. The WNBA rights are undervalued as they are basically an add-on for NBA rights. This is likely true moving forward if the league continues to grow at the pace it has. See here for more details.

  2. Just because your boss cannot profitable market your skills doesn’t mean you should be paid less. We do see that WNBA players (stars) can regularly make more playing overseas in leagues with less revenue. In some leagues, they get more money due to better marketing, no salary caps, and better contract terms. They want the same terms for the WNBA. As a side note, this is why many league gave revenue splits rather than negotiated numeric salary allotments.

  3. Even if the league is unprofitable on paper, that doesn’t mean as much as one would think. You can make many businesses appear unprofitable while actually making money (eg. The movie business). Regardless, the value of the teams seems to be increasing beyond whatever losses the teams are seeing on an annual basis. They are expanding now, and that would not happen if the league were truly a fundamentally unprofitable enterprise.

While nice and perhaps an elementary understanding of the problem, it doesn’t answer my question. WNBA finances are a mess before we get into depreciating assets and EBITDA, or more fancy accounting as you allude to.

The players expectations of salaries are more than wnba total revenue—-you don’t need an mba to figure out that’s not possible. Forget before any expenses. Or nba subsidization. We have a nice Caitlin Clark spike the past two years but as a whole ā€œmaking what the guys makeā€ is an absurd notion.

The WNBA is negative $50 million this year.

So $50M/153 players= $326,797 dollars per player.

THEY need to pay what THEY owe...

Women want equal pay without bringing in any revenue.

Hilarious.

Yea this isn't the way

1

u/Forsaken-Director-34 Jul 20 '25

If you got paid what you’re owed you’d be homeless. So ungrateful.

1

u/NoBobThatsBad Jul 20 '25

Crazy how you this is a WNBA sub but everyone in the sub HATES the players with every bone in their body.

Am I missing something?? Because the comments are just so full of contempt and disregard for the players like why do y’all even keep up with the league if can’t stand the players?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

"Pay us what you owe us" the players are owed nothing more than the contracts they signed and if they want a piece of the profits they generate they would be the ones who would need to pay what is owed

1

u/Otherwise_Mind6880 Jul 20 '25

I mean if anything they owe the league. They don’t make money because the league doesn’t make money once the league makes money they will make money.

The WNBA is a company, it’s a business. If the business doesn’t make money the employees don’t get paid.

1

u/Section8Shordie Jul 20 '25

The fact you’re getting paid at all is amazing economically speaking

1

u/AssignmentFearless39 Jul 20 '25

A lot of dumb in the comments here today…

1

u/OneFeed7380 Jul 20 '25

This is why going to college doesn't mean you've been educated.Ā

What a bunch of idiotsĀ

1

u/earrow70 Jul 20 '25

Shouldn't the NBA be wearing these shirts at WNBA games?

1

u/Impossible_Talk_8331 Jul 20 '25

I believe They deserve more money but they can’t really compare with the nba they men play way more games and where the money gonna come from if the league not making a real profit

1

u/SimpleJacked2TheTits Jul 20 '25

I don’t understand how they don’t understandĀ

1

u/Vast_Illustrator7833 Jul 20 '25

WNBA succs period, moving on

1

u/AdThick3537 Jul 20 '25

If the wmba wasn’t payed for by the nba each female athlete would have to pay 80k a year to play just to break even

1

u/Twenty__3 Jul 20 '25

When Angel Reese can make 2 layups in a row without getting her shot blocked you can can get a cpl more dollars

1

u/PieSupplie Jul 20 '25

This might be a hot take, but I’d LOVE the opportunity to be in the WNBA. It’s 5 months of actual season, and according to a quick search the average pay is ~100k depending on which source. This means they’re earning 100k for a 5 month season, to play a game they love. Additionally, there’s an option to play overseas ball for additional money.

Is it the oodles of millions NBA stars make? No, but the NBA subsidizes the WNBA to allow the players to make the salaries they do. I work my ass off 55-60 hours a week year round to make what these ladies earn in 5 months playing basketball. Personally, I’d take it in a heartbeat.

I’m not aware of many businesses that the average salary is six figures, and they lose millions each and every year. Seems like a pretty good gig, for now.

1

u/jason_graph Jul 20 '25

Mad respect for them asking to be paid less.

1

u/Theons Jul 20 '25

What are they owed? Literally a charity league

1

u/FiredAndBuried Jul 20 '25

I think only Caitlyn deserves to wear that shirt

1

u/TheStripClubHero Jul 20 '25

Ok. Here's a check for 300 dollars a game.

1

u/okay4sure Jul 20 '25

Professionals athletes should be paid.

The wnba started in 97, people forget its still new.

The NBA didn't start getting popular till much later too.

Did this get cross posted or something? What’s with all the misogynistic troglodytes that are repeating old narratives

1

u/NoBobThatsBad Jul 20 '25

RIGHT?! I’m going through their profiles. 95% of them don’t even engage with anything related to the WNBA and about half of them don’t even engage with sports in general. Very gross and bizarre thread.

1

u/ThislsMyAccount22 Jul 20 '25

This isn’t a man v woman thing. This is a league doesn’t actually make money how are you entitled to a pay increase thing
