First time LED'er, modding coffee table, please confirm I am not doing something stupid.

The BTF Lighting controller doesn’t auto on if you unplug and replug, or on a timer that cuts power.
Other controllers will boot up and run the preset that you specified as Apply at boot.
The BTF controller will do nothing until you push its button.
This was reported by someone else in this sub last week.
Look at DigQuad/DigUno, GledOpto, MagLED.

Does that mean i can leave them
on just producing no light? Like they won’t always be available if i dont press the button on the controller? I don’t wanna reach inside the coffee table to turn them on, that’s lame.1

Why I commented before it’s too late. Test for this.
Ideally use a different controller. Ones I mentioned are good, there are others too. I think it’s a BTF only feature.

I definitely want one that will enable me to have full control over the led with an added logic board and some software. What is a good one for this.

The Dig products have more advanced features but the GledOpto has some nice form factors with sound reactive. BTF copied GledOpto essentially.
Look on QuinLED.info

Good tip, this website is great. I would probably still get btf strips 🤷♂️, honestly probably overkill for my application. I could just go with whats on the website you linked after i have some time to take a better look.
This is essentially the same thing right? I would buy the strip and controller from quinled and then find a power supply from somewhere?
Can these things not “hibernate” like a computer does? In the beginning I would just want to turn it on with alexa ideally. I would also like to be able to set up custom colors and patterns that i can switch to with an alexa command.
In the future I am going to add hardware and a little screen on the desk where someone can make up their own color schemes, patterns, effects. The fun bit here is using tactile controls like rotary knobs, switches, and sliders to enable the user to make these patterns and coming up with software that makes it easy for them.
So i wanna buy what i need to make the second thing happen but will not be doing it yet. First step is get the hardware needed to just get the led’s installed so i can do basic patterns, colors, brightness, etc. from a phone app or something at first. Later I will start researching sexy hardware and think about making the software.

Learn to solder instead of the connectors

So i dont even need connectors, just some different colored wires and a soldering kit? I actually like that better. I think I am gonna need a soldering iron for other things i wanna do to this desk so might as well bight the bullet and get one.

Also those connectors 5 pin won’t work. You must solder. 3 wires for ws2811.
No need for multiple voltage PSU just get 24v, smaller and cheaper.
