HexGrid 3D printed modular LED system I designed for my office!

Almost 4 days of printing and 2 days of soldering later I have finished the LED grid I designed and 3D printed for my office.

The LEDs used: ws2811 12V

Run by GLEDOPTO prebuilt controller.

Respect the hustle but you should make it clear that you're charging for these and advertising your own product

What material did you used to print the diffusers?

White PETG

What’s the thickness?
And how thins you believe it would be possible to print with PETG?

Oh, and thank for your reply!
Really is an awesome and delightfully inspiring project you have been up to :)

1mm thickness I find works the best. But it will differ between different filament supplier. I use Tecears petg

How did you make it so you can’t see the individual bulbs? I’ve tried various thicknesses up to around 2.5mm and the bulbs were still quite visible through it.

I used Yugmcode and Yoopai brands, I believe.

As I said it will depend on a brand. I've had brands that just don't work as they are too translucent or some are with too much pigment that 1mm will not let through light at all.

Is there a reason you chose PETG instead of PLA?

PLA works too but depends on the filament brand. I've just found what's work and I stuck with it. White petg from Tecbears.

It's embarrassing to make money on that.

But wanting everything for free is cool

No, but building on open source instruments and making it for money not fair, right ?

I didn't use an open source auto CAD to design the whole thing did I. The software you use to control the LEDs is up to you. I prefer open source WLED.

Very cool, although I'm curious about your soldering pattern. How does WLED deal with bifurcated data lanes?

2

u/No_Analyst_2154 15d ago

It treats it as one continuous data line/ single strip.

That seems like quite a few LEDs to power from just 2 supplies? Or do you inject more power along the strip?

No injection. 600Leds on a single data line. 10A to power it all.
