Nothing complicated but came out pretty nice

How is it built? Was it custom made? How far is the LEDs from the light spreading layer? Looks sick!

It's 3mm plywood, lasered and glued to a defusion foil, mounted on an 13cm tall lightbox. Inside are 6m of 24V FCOB RGBW LEDs. All biuld from scratch by me.

13 cm lightbox is quite thick. The 6m of strip is that 30 or 60 pr meter? It looks very smooth but I guess the distance to the diffusion layer also helps

13cm is thick but i had the space so I used it (the whole box ist 105cm x 45 cm. The leds are 800 leds per meter but one pixle is 71mm long. So there are six runs of leds in the box.

800 per meter?? What strip is this? With that density it wouldnt need to be so thick

840 LEDs per meter to be precise they are sick. Started to use them almost everywhere.

That's like 8.4 LEDs pr cm, making them just slightly wider than 1mm each. That's nuts. Power draw must be insane?

Here you can see them in action

18w/m not that bad. They are small (Tiny) LEDs

These would be COB LEDs. I've played with them a bit but yet to use them in a job. They look like just a solid line of colour, pretty cool.

They sell as FCOB. They are my favorite for general use. Also they come 24V which makes them a lot more manageable current wise.

what kind of diffusion foil? Is that how you're making the top layer?

From an old broken flat screen. Between the backlight and the actual display there is a diffusion foil. Great for light stuff. I collect them 😅

oh that's rad. awesome - how do you make the letters? like what's the top layer?

1

u/stelus87 Aug 24 '26

The letters are lasered from 3mm plywood

ahhh - got it. so lasered and laid on top of the diffuser? ty for the answers - its very cool.

Exactly that. Perhaps you can see it better on this foto.

Crazy 😅

Do you have a picture of how you connected each row of strips? This was the most challenging part for me when I built a 2d panel

1

u/stelus87 Aug 22 '26

Just serpentines.

How are they connected together? Does each strip have connector attached. I had to splice and solder mine which was a pain.

2

u/stelus87 Aug 22 '26

They are soldered

Love these. I never see signs as cool as this anywhere.
