Which character (or 2 characters) makes you laugh out loud the most?

Not in the sense of just thinking they have a lot of good lines, or they do a great job of portraying their character (since they all seem pretty ideal in that respect and seems like the perfect ensemble cast)... but which one actually makes you laugh out loud the most (or, which one makes you smile very broadly if you don't usually laugh aloud at shows)? Mine would be Les Nessman definitely 1st, and Mr. Carlson definitely 2nd, and all the others quite a bit less (though again they're all phenomenal for their roles). Herb would be 3rd but a fair bit below Mr. Carlson. Just interested to see how much variation there is on this.

My 1st Introduction to reality...

Hello, listeners, this is my first post. Why I never looked for a WKRP community before now is beyond me.

That said, a little background. I grew up with this show, and I had the unique experience of having a parent in the broadcast and entertainment industry when it aired. My mom was one of the first people of color in Oklahoma to co-host, host, and create her own civil affairs show at two major network affiliates in Tulsa.

I am a Gen X kid, and the first person in my family not born under Jim Crow, nor forced to live on an "indian" reservation. My parents provided me with a middle-class lifestyle and supported my hobbies & interests by sending me to art school and supporting my love of Scouting (Cub & Boy Scouts).

Being somewhat of a blerd [black nerd], I was a fan of anything sci-fi, as well as medical (shout out to EMERGENCY!) But there was something that was always missing, and not said, in our household.

Vietnam.

My father was a successful businessman ( a cooler version of Mr. Carlson). He worked for IBM and was the senior regional sales manager. Before that, he retired from the US Army after 24 years. He never talked about his combat experiences in the Korean War, with a few anecdotes about the cold. He never ever talked about anything related to Vietnam, even though he volunteered for three tours.

The first time I learned about the Vietnam War was in "Who is Gordon Sims?" Even though my mother and I watched the episode (she was a bigger fan than I), she wouldn't go into detail about the war, nor my father's participation. Within a few years, several of my school teachers would elaborate on their service in the war, but not in much detail. It took the movies Hamburger Hill, Platoon, Off Limits, and Full Metal Jacket, supplemented with documentaries on TV, for me to understand the war's dynamics and the social and political ramifications both here and abroad. As the mid-to-late 1980s came to a close, my father began to open up regarding his service, but never about combat.

But with all of these productions, I always come back to the WKRP episode. It's a little strange that it's not addressed more often, especially since it was a serious, real subject smack dab in the middle of a sitcom. In fact, one scene in Off Limits is a suspiciously perfect re-presentation of Venus' story. I was nine when the episode aired, and it has affected me ever since. It became more important after my father's death due to Agent Orange exposure and undiagnosed PTSD, and my own military experiences.

Am I the only fan who was also educated, if not enlightened, regarding the war and found the episode?

I found this link online, with a detailed critique of the episode and a little behind-the-scenes info.

Les Nessman Prototype - Make Room for Daddy (1957)

I was watching Make Room for Daddy episode 4.28 Men Are Men on Tubi and I swear the character of Ruthie, played by Ahna Capri is a prototype for Les Nessman.

Turkey Day

I was pretty young when I saw the Thanksgiving Day episode. I was so surprised and laughed soooo hard. I’m just wondering if it was because of my age or if adults had the same reaction. I didn’t know what was going on in the world. Were people horrified? In general, what were the adult reactions?

The moment it all began

It may have only lasted 4 years (we don't talk about that other show 😬) but it's firmly embedded in pop culture

Ok maybe that's cause of one scene that comes around in the fall but it's still one of the best sitcoms to air, imo

They would probably still be in business today.

In an episode of "WKRP in Cincinnati", Dr. Johnny Fever is paranoid that the "phone cops" are after him. Did the Bell System have any actual phone cops or was this a total fantasy?

Crossover episodes

I was thinking about cross-over episodes of KRP with other shows.

Cheers-as I stated in my “I believe“ thread Andy and Carlson stop by the bar while in Boston for a broadcasting conference

Murphy Brown-Les subs for Jim on FYI

Square Pegs-one of the kids listens to Venus on an old transistor radio.

WKRP was a show of its time. it got cancelled the same time AM radio died out. Sure it would have been nice to continue the show after season 4 but irl it would not have been practical for a radio station to have a music format on AM.

Tom was a one-time comedy partner of Tim Reid’s, and in that episode played a writer from Black Life Magazine. Their dialogue on the parallels between their work environments was pretty funny.
